If there’s one thing the Bulls needed this trade deadline it’s another guard. I’m glad they managed to avoid that disaster.

With all this talk about guards, I realized I never bothered to think about why we call them guards and forwards. I guess “forward” because they play closest to the basket on offense, but why guard? Everyone is guarding, and guards are usually the weakest in terms of defense
EDIT: I looked it up. Apparently before dribbling was a rule, you would have 2 players playing defense sitting near your basket, 2 players playing offense sitting near the opposing basket and one in the center court to help pass in between. The center became the Center, the players attacking the opposing basket became Forwards, and the ones defending your own basket became the Guards. Once dribbling became a thing, on a defensive rebound naturally the guards would be the ones bringing it up the floor which lead them to being more agile, smaller and less defense-oriented than they were originally

This time it’s probably because they really wanted someone to represent them at the All-Star festivities and just assumed he’d be in the dunk contest again, not realizing he’s not going to be.
I actually had the same thought. I don’t know if it’s admirable, or sad. But I think this year’s dunk contest is shaping up to be one of the worst in history, so they’ll take anything at this point.
