But you could only have a relegation system in a league/sport you’re starting from scratch. There is zero chance owners of a multi-billion dollar property (ie. NBA franchises) would put that at risk by agreeing to a form of relegation that would destroy the value of that property.

Monty was just ¹⁰⁄₁₀ for setting our culture. Then relied on CP3 to steady the offense. He’d make some bad coaching decisions pretty regularly (weird rotations, timeouts, playing guys who were bad way too much)

Monty was definitely the motivational/inspirational type, but he really catered to the players on his roster and was cool with playing this slow paced and extremely iso/mid range heavy style.

Fast forward to JO and he has these guys full court pressing every position, taking threes on fast breaks and from the logo, and running 3 PGs most the game. Dude knows the modern game and embraces it

The Suns are a good reminder of a few things. Right coach matters for a team, talent fit matters more than talent total (as long as you have over a certain amount of talent obviously), and hustle goes a long way.

Losing one of their two best players on a struggling team should have meant they would be worse this year by the way most people view basketball (just pile on as many all stars as possible), but things like chemistry and fit matter a ton.

Yeah, but it’s always like that in NBA culture.

One guy makes 15-30 shots, the other makes 1-2 shots: “wooow, this team has TALENT, it can win the title! Superstar!”.

Two guys each make 8-16 shots per game, for literally the same result: “man, this team has NO TALENT, such sucky team, these teams can never really win, we know it”.

Quite funnily, now, as we see in this thread - they are still doing the same thing, not willing to rethink their dogmas, attributing all of their good results to just the one guy they see gets the most points in the boxscore, Dillon Brooks, strongly exaggerating what that one guy means to the whole team in itself and ignoring how they play as a team.

Ya our narrative has shifted to “Brooks and Collin are way better than we thought. And Suns are hustling now!” It’s overly simplistic and continues the idea that all basketball is, is talent + effort. The other one is saying our coach is carrying our talent.

IMO, in watching this team from this season and the last two, the biggest thing I’ve noticed is Grayson Allen’s role shift, and it makes me think everyone is now given a role that uses all of the talent they have. Grayson was a 3nD wing before this year. The only time he’d drive to the basket is if there was a wide open lane. He was never asked to beat his man at the perimeter, or setup a PnR. Turns out, he has an above average first step, is strong, and is straight up elite at getting it to the roll man. No, you’re not going to win a title running an offense through him, but if you can rely on Booker and (hopefully) Jalen to create advantages, Grayson doesn’t need much of an advantage to finish the play.

So, I’m thinking the same thing is happening with Dillon, Collin, Royce, Bouyea. It’s not that they got better necessarily, it’s that they’re being used fully. There’s still teams stuck in the “stars are the stars, role player are players” mentality. And the reality is that there’s a lot of guys in this league that can score if you move the ball around and create incremental advantages.
