i already watched it, and i’ve watched plenty of luka’s games. the video’s conclusion is basically that luka can be a great defender when he puts in the effort, but he’s terrible when he doesn’t. and very often he doesn’t- hence why he has the 2nd lowest defensive speed in the league, right behind 41 year old lebron.

i’ve seen him complaining to refs instead of running back in transition, or jogging over to a shooter instead of a hard closeout, MANY times. full games of this, not just highlights. bring up all the advanced stats you want, they’re not the holy grail of basketball truth you think they are

2023 Mavs team was CERTAINLY worse than this Lakers team and imo easily the worst team Luka has been on even after the Kyrie trade.

Post-Kyrie trade: Josh Green, THJ, and Reggie Bullock were taking turns starting at SF/PF. And this is with a center rotation of Dwight Powell and Christian Wood. Maxi Kleber also only played 37 games that year so there was genuinely no size, rebounding, or shot blocking from the 3-5 positions. Even the backup depth forward was mf Davis Bertans who cant rebound or defend.

I guess it depends on what you consider the 2023 Mavs. I think any reasonable person would take 2023 Kyrie on this team. The Mavs just didnt mesh after the trade and had injuries before deciding to tank for Lively. As a former Mavs fan, I was still excited in 2023 because you could see the pieces that were coming together. This Lakers team has 2 in Luka and AR.

I mean yea they have Lebron, but I think its obvious that he doesn’t have much left in the tank.

Idk man its not just they didn’t mesh. How can you win games with your 3-5 all being 4 rebound per game guys? No ability to defend in the post between Green, THJ, Bullock, Bertans. No shot blocking from the 5s with Wood and Powell.

It was genuinely a bad team. There’s only so much Luka and Kyrie can do to make up for it. And tbh there was some absolutely electric games. I remember a game they both went for 40 against Philadelphia or Sacramento, dont remember exactly which. It was just unreal shotmaking. But there was nothing around them.

Like for sure there was excitement after 2023 because you knew exactly what they needed to get and the core duo was locked in which is more important. But that doesn’t mean the 2023 team was good.

That’s the exact same situation the Lakers are in now. Ayton might get more rebounds, but they might as well be playing 4v5 when Gabe Vincent is getting minutes. He’s one of the worst players I’ve seen on a court, Ayton may or may not show up, Lebron has been showing his age more and more. That Mavs team could at least shoot like you mentioned, but I’m holding my breathe everytime someone other than Luka takes a shot. Ayton is one of the biggest guys on the court and I get shocked when he makes a basket in the paint.

Tbh I’d love to see a game betweem the ‘26 Lakers and ‘23 Mavs. Both are pretty bad but I think in different ways.

Lebron is the third option. He is a PF and averages 7 boards a game. Marcus Smart can play defense. Laravia hustles and grabs and boards. That’s already more rebounding and defense than the 2023 Mavs had. It might be all the Lakers have in that department lol but its still more than the 2023 Mavs.

Ayton/Hayes is also better than Powell/Wood.

Maybe the issue is just larger right now with Reaves out. If you want to argue the 2026 Lakers without Reaves is worse than the 2023 Mavs, maybe there’s an argument. But full health no shot.
