So you’re getting a lot of consequences rather than an explanation of what it is. A trade exception allows a team to acquire by trade a player who’s salary fits into the exception even if they otherwise would be unable to acquire that player due to cap restrictions. This does not apply to being hard capped at the tax or either of the aprons

Because they cleared \(28.8m today, they're allowed to "spend" that \)28.8m in trades, if they so choose. They have \(28.8m of wiggle room when it comes to matching salaries in trades. They could trade a \)2m player for a $30m player. This exception lasts for 1 calendar year.

You keep getting the same response but the real answer: probably nothing. The overwhelming majority of trade exceptions never get used. It’s a theoretical way to make trades that go over the cap without making the money add up the way it usually must. That would mean they could take on more money in contracts than they send out. Which sounds great in theory. In practice, teams rarely if ever use them and they’re relatively worthless because of that.

Memphis can be a team that can take on salary. Either they’re the main part of a trade or be a 3rd team to help facilitate a multi team trade. All this will be at a price though probably set at a few draft picks.

It means that Jaren Jackson’s salary/cap hold (roughly the same thing) is that much more expensive than the salary they just took on.

The exception counts towards your cap but you can waive the exception to sign a player if you want to use that cap elsewhere (ROUGHLY and assuming you aren’t in apron hell).

Most exceptions go unused and mostly just are a good representation of how much money a team saved in a trade

It’s as if they have 28.8 mil of free cap space but only for a trade. IE if they wanted to trade for a player making 24mil a year they could do so without sending back salary

They’re treated like player salary for the purposes of trades but don’t count against the cap. You don’t have to actually have a player’s salary match, you can use trade exception “funds.” You don’t actually send money over. Think of it like placeholder salary that doesn’t count against the cap.

It allows teams over the cap to take in more salary than is normally allowed. So let’s say one team is over the cap and they want to trade a player who makes 20 million for a player making 30 million. With a 10 million dollar trade exception, they can legally make that trade.

Larger TPEs usually get used in some capacity. Memphis can pretty comfortably enter the Giannis/Harden/whoever trade framework as a salary eater and get some sort of asset(s) back

The Celtics have definitely used them before. 28mil is a big one, usually they are less than 10mil which I agree is less useful. This could really help a contender clean up their cap situation if the grizzlies are willing to take a bad contract back that goes through next year (at least)
