Thank god for this new generation. As great as Lebron and Steph and a dozen other guys have been, they’ve been absolutely dog water for the ASG and how much they influence others to not care about the games. If those two took the game seriously, everyone would have. Because they didn’t, nobody did for a decade.

Not a Kobe dick rider at all, but loved his intensity in the ASG as he was always trying to win and would even lock in defensively from time to time. 1 single injury is all it takes for fans of that team, teams themselves, and a lot of other players to hate the idea of playing hard in a meaningless exhibition.

I get why people want them to play hard but I also completley get why players and teams want them to be extremely careful. A 4-6 week injury could easily put a player out for the rest of the season.

In recent years, the only ASG I cared to watch was 2020 cause of the Kobe rules.

Overall, I cared the most about 03 (Jordan retiring) and I still remember how loud the applause was for Jordan through my little crt tv.

My point being, all star games are rarely interesting unless there is a major shift happening in the NBA. I agree, if anyone gets hurt at the all star game, it could change how the second half of the season…the time when teams are scrambling to make make play Ins, playoffs or get home court advantage.

The issue is players get paid too much to care.

Back 20 years ago, in Australia, the all star game was basically one of the only games we’d get on TV. Whoever played in that, did the dunk comp, 3 point comp etc basically became instantly internationally recognised. It was a big deal for those players because more exposure meant bigger endorsement deals.

These days the average player gets such obscene wealth that there is no need to do the All Star weekend stuff to increase exposure.
