On Brookyln’s next possession, Detroit played such a suffocating defense that the Nets turned it over with a shot clock violation. Then the Pistons extended their lead to 53 in the fourth quarter. In the NBA, a single player can set up a franchise for a decade. Those #1 picks can be so freaking valuable compared to even #2, that you would have good, playoff caliber teams tanking to land a Wemby or a LeBron without some kind of lottery.

The closest comparable thing to it in sports is an NFL QB.

I do think the lottery should be limited to the spots 1 and 3 and the worst record automatically gets the #2 pick as both a punishment and a reward.
