[Highlight] Jason Kidd on criticism for playing Cooper Flagg at Point Guard: “That’s your opinion. You guys write that bulls. That’s not — I’ve done this. I’ve played this game. I played it. I know what the f I’m doing.
It really did wonders for Coop as a self-creator. He went from turning it over a bunch of times to pretty much having the ball on a string and getting wherever he wants to.
I kept telling people that he literally did this with Giannis. If he sees a guy that’s going to be the franchise player, putting the ball in their hands and giving them the reps (even through failure) is great for development. You have to be able to initiate your own offense if you’re going to be a superstar
Looking at you, AD
He will forever need that PG to unlock his ultimate form.
The Mavs are better than what their records suggest.
IMO it’s D’Lo’s fault they have a losing record. Fuck D’lo. He is as bad as Brandon Podruski
I had hope for DLo but I guess you never know how crazy the girl is they warned you about till you date her.
Just wait til he drops 25 on 60% from 3 and he gets you so fuckin high on him, the next day he scores 5 shooting 15% on FGs.
The DLo special. All talent, no brain.
This. Looks cool, plays dumb
The vibes are immaculate, the shooting is pretty maculate
The best part of the DLo experience is picking a random game and just watching him exclusively the whole time.
gotta be one of the all time “highest highs but lowest lows” players ive ever watched lol
I feel like this about Zach LaVine.
J.R. Smith fits the bill too.
While being -15 in both games
Welp nobody warned me and she fuckin ruined me. And we didn’t even date, just talked for five months.
We still talking about D’Lo?
Man I thought surely at $5.5 mil a year he would’ve lived up to his contract but nah he tricked us.
We should never sign an older former Lakers player 0/2 between Dlo and Javale.
We had low expectations and we were still disappointed.
We are legitimately one good postseason (even without accounting for what will likely be a pretty solid draft pick) from being a solid team, Coop is just that fucking incredible
He’ll forever need a PG and a big man
I remember when AD was the pinnacle of big man with guard skills
AD used to be a guard when he was younger. His injuries have robbed him/fans of his true potential
Sadly he lived in an era that didn’t give that level of opportunity. Jokic was the first of his kind for a center to get the ball as much as he does to create
Yup, I can’t believe how many people can’t understand doing that for development when the team isn’t even supposed to be good. Also funny people hold it against him doing it with Giannis and Giannis himself has said it was good for him
He also said that Kidd told him not to shoot threes and that messed him up.
Actually sounds correct tho. I’ve heard many people over the years say he shouldn’t even be taking as many 3’s as he does now
He says that’s the reason he lost confidence or whatever. Kidd was old school a bit and Giannis actually had a decent stroke before he started messing with his mechanics.
Except that anytime giannis jacks a 3 against your team, you feel relived that he’s bailed you out
Giannis’ stroke is, and always has been, shit. The man is not even a decent shooter.
WItness his career 69% FT shooting and 28.6% career 3pt %.
He could just be using that as an excuse. Giannis was never a great shooter to begin with and a growth spurt plus added muscle prolly didn’t help that cause
That’s exactly why Pop did that to Sochan. Reps are good.
What’s going on with Sochan now?
I say this as a casual spurs watcher, if someone wants to provide more insight, but it seems like he never took the leap.
He also had a few injuries that set him back, and now he’s being overshadowed by a group of young studs. I don’t think he fits the current spurs system, but I can see him being a solid trade asset as a role player as his career goes on, especially if he manages to figure out his efficiency issues.
People overlook the fact that Giannis actually used to average more than 6 APG which is actually more than what Curry averages at that times. Giannis’ drive to the basket game is elevated because he doesnt turn the ball that much and has ben really good at reading defenses and passing the ball. Ofc, not PG level but for the position he plays, he is pretty good at that.
Reminds me of Jason Williams getting the shot of confidence from his coach as a rookie telling him “if you screw up a pass, don’t worry about it, next time down try it again but behind the back”
He was considered the worst coach in the league when he was doing this lol.
I think he knows what he’s doing though
His handle is still a little loose but he’s legitimately done a great job running the offense as the point.
He generates a lot of great looks for his teammates and himself
Ngl, I think it takes a legendary PG to be able to spot the sign in a green rookie well enough to subject him to this kind of trial by fire. Kidd basically knew Coop could make it work, and trusted in his rookie.
It looked like a terrible idea for a minute. Coop just happens to be worth the top billing. Looking like a cold blooded killer now.
Same thing happened with deni avdija.
and it took until Deni was coached by Billups to unlock it.
Now Billups was a bad coach in every other aspect, but he did a good job with Deni and (to an extent) Scoot
This isn’t true though?
Portland didn’t run Deni at PG until all 4 of our other PGs went down with injury early this year, and Splitter was already in charge at that point.
Well, now I don’t know who to believe.
Wait hold up, now we praising Kidd for putting Coop at the point ? I don’t recall reading a single thread where Midd got praised for that, until right now. Correct me if I’m wrong.
I’m glad Kidd put his foot down the way he did here. Respect.
What’s this we? You realize this is an internet forum where you read the opitions of thousands of people?
Some of us have been acknowledging that it’s good in the long term, especially given how it worked for Giannis and that our best point guard is a wildly undersized undrafted two-way player
The real issue earlier was that they didn’t have any other ball handlers out there with him. It was Coop-Klay-PJ-AD-Livey that started the season. And who is benefitting from that? How does Coop even do anything with that type of spacing? Just a disaster lineup. Things started looking much better when they put actual guards out there cause it gave some relief for Cooper. And we didn’t force the double big bullshit.
He tried and even if it “failed” it was a learning experience.
Not like the Mavs are too concerned about their record and Cooper’s turnovers on those games.
His ball handling in college was my biggest knock against him. He lost his team multiple games because of it & I even made a post that if he didn’t improve it, it would severely hinder him.
Flagg’s improvement in that area in such a short time is absolutely incredible
I wonder how people expect the franchise player to develop ball handling without actually putting the ball in his hands.
I don’t know why this breaks so many casuals brains. He’s a number one pick. He had the ball a lot in his hands in college. The team was already in a weird spot at the start of season, so why not just throw him into the fire and let him experience what it’s like playmaking in the NBA.
Hes learning a ton. It’s obvious the strategy is working. Even if hes getting doubled it’s even more data and scenarios he’s learning to do deal with. As a player he’s improving in the NBA. Let coach cook imo. That said – he sounds overly defensive here. He should know reporters are going to be on some dumb shit.
he doesn’t sound defensive at all lmao, he sounds like he’s trying to explain to the reporters a hard fact
like the spurs did with wemby last season with the threes
Iirc he did the same with Giannis.
And what Mark D did with Shai and is doing with Jdub (when he’s healthy).
Now this is truth.
If they had healthy Kyrie and AD it would be different but this season is in the trash so just let cooper get his reps in
He’s only like a week older than LeBron was as a rookie so just let him develop
People were getting mass downvoted here and in the mavericks sub for having this opinion at the beginning of the season
A lot of amnesia going on. I’m pretty ignorant about bball, but I remember what I read about it on Reddit. There was a lot of criticism toward Kidd about this.
So why are you able to answer this question soooo much better than Jason Kidd?
That’s all he had to say, but instead a reporter asked him a question about a bunch of the criticism he’s been getting and he acts like a fucking titty baby.
Personally, I love to see it. He looks like the wife beating bitch he’s always been. And as someone born and raised in the DFW, I think anybody who supports this team still with so much as watching them a non-pirated stream is a traitor to Dallas because they’re fucking enabling the financial viability of this bullshit that the Dumont and that old bitch have done. Basketball was done in Dallas the moment the team was sold, but we found out about it when they traded Luka.
I hope Flagg is smart enough to go to a legit team once his contract is up because he deserves better than Dallas, who is now back in its long-term poverty franchise era like it’s the fucking 90s.
Don’t bother asking Steve Kerr.
Can we ask Kuminga. 😂
People want instant success without any failure for themselves so they expect the same from athletes.
By watching youtube videos of course
/s
90% of your subreddit hated it when they were losing games though at the beginning of the season, calling Jason Kidd a duo basketball terrorist alongside Nico. “What are you doing? You might injure Cooper when he’s doing things he’s not used to!!”
I gots the receipts.
Can anyone name a franchise level wing player that is not capable of running an offense?
That’s why Kidd did this. It’s a mandatory skill.
Idk if I would consider Kawhi or KD “running an offense”. They’re just getting their own shots and points. Rest of the team is doing something else between themselves.
That’s why it took both of them playing on already established super teams with hall of fame point guards to win anything. Despite being considered the guys that were supposed to challenge LeBron neither of them could take over a team like LeBron
Kawhi didn’t have a superteam in 2019
He joined the team that won 59 games the year before and won off the back of 2 season ending injuries from warrior stars
That raptors team was not a superteam are we being serious 😭
Some people be saying all kind of bullshit here to take from giving credit to where it is due.
I think he just means stacked roster in this case and not “super team”
Wasn’t a superteam but it was a very well rounded team that needed a go-to scorer. That team basically went 10 deep and was holding it down in the RS when Kawhi load managed.
That’s the meta now. Raptors were ahead of their time
Pascal Siakam
Kyle Lowry
Fred VanVleet
Marc Gasol
Danny Green
Serge Ibaka
Norman Powell
Maybe not a ‘super team,’ but one of the best supporting casts ever.
This doesn’t fit kawhi. And LeBron was on a super team his first two rings at his peak
Ok so which wings besides Lebron are out there winning rings on average teams by running the entire offense? Is that really the standard you want to set. Because it’s literally only Lebron. And it took a superteam for even Lebron to win his first ring.
It’s not like he’ll be a full-time PG. It’s only in those pinch moments when the offense is dry or in the clutch.
Why don’t reporters ask the real questions?
Jason, why do you wear old lady glasses? The world needs to know!
See, its right here. “Gloria Vanderbilt collection”
You were all hopped up on cinnamon swirls! They wouldn’t serve you anymore.
I was spotting those raccoons!
Miss Terious. And it is mysterious because the buttons are on the wrong side. That’s the mystery.
Bro looks like my step mom at 8:30 pm
That was a great question because it allowed Kidd to say how he really felt and now we know
The delivery of, “and I don’t give a fuck what you guys write.”
Is accentuated beyond measure w that stare through those glasses!
Why yall gotta be like that man? 😂
If this exact video was in a movie they would accuse Kidd of being a terrible actor. Why is his delivery always so weird lol guy sounds like a serial killer
That’s a good point about acting in general. Most people in real life situations are awkward so why do people think someone not being smooth in a film is evidence of bad acting? lol
Hilarious username to weigh in on this, not saying you’re wrong though lol
Because that’s not how stories work. You don’t give characters “flaws” unless there’s a point. You don’t just randomly give all your characters different characteristics that are “realistic”. Stories aren’t real
It’s not the not-being-smooth that’s the issue. It’s that usually the character is supposed to be smooth and it’s established, then an actor not sounding smooth breaks the facade.
You’re not supposed to look like an awkward public speaker unless you’re playing one
To reference the comment you’re responding to, because instead of emotionally investing in why they’re saving Private Ryan the audience would be wondering why Tom Hanks comes off like a serial killer
I mean film has kind of a perfect delivery expectation from it unless it’s based on actual people(fictional otherwise) who are established to be awkward. It’s why proper characterization is important
Same with dialogue. We’re so used to dialogue being really smooth and stylized, but in real life most conversations consist of responses that are only vaguely related to what came before. Not to mention all the bumbling.
Because no one wants to watch that
I thought my phone switched to a clip from the Dahmer documentary
Lol the A/C unit hum sounds a lot like the kind of eerie drone that would play during something like that
Cause he aint acting mo fucka
i mean… he’s got a little bit of that history😅
He is a former player and current coach. He’s a person.
Is acting a relevant head coach skill?
I’m pretty sure this reporter wasn’t going to be criticizing it. He was going to mention it was criticized and then ask about how much it ended up helped Coop’s development.
100%. The reporter clarified on twitter:
I tried to ask about him getting criticized early but being right in the long run because Coop is great on ball. But he cut me off when I said the worlds “national critics”
I tried to ask about him getting criticized early but being right in the long run because Coop is great on ball.
But he cut me off when I said the worlds “national critics”
Somehow because it’s sports the way he’s talking isn’t supposed to be embarrassing. But he’s espousing to not care what pundits say and then shows how rattled he is by it. Pretty edgy response to a softball question
WE let players and coaches get away with “bullying reporters” for too long
Basketball especially is the worst at this, players and coaches constnatly berate reporters, constnatly accuse them of making up every story (Even if it’s true), etc
These days if an N BA player doesn’t like what you reported they just shout “FAKE NEWS” and try and insult you
Then they complain when reporters don’t like them and don’t talk with them
Yeah I’m sure that’s what he was going to say lol. These reporters know how to phrase a question to elicit an emotional response. He could have phrased it as, “Cooper looked great on-ball tonight, but what do you say to national critics…..” He lead with the trigger word and got called on hid bullshit and backed with facts. Even after Kidd finished his statement, he tried to restate the question after clearly agitating him. Kidd was right to say what he had to say and if this is a young reporter than maybe he shouldn’t attempt to lead with some bullshit like that if he wants to get a good quote out of people.
Kidd just sounds like he has a hair trigger and seems like a dick. The reporter said absolutely nothing wrong. He was setting him up with a softball question.
This is a dude who repeatedly beat the absolute shit out of his wife, of course he has a hair trigger.
Like not that it would give him a pass but Kidd isn’t a dude a who struck his wife once, he’s an abuser of the worst kind.
Worked out for Giannis and he was behind that.
YESSSSSS
People are so stupid about trying to define positions.
Calling Flagg a PG or a Center doesn’t change what player he is.
Positions don’t matter. Get over it.
Position only matters if you are limited by your skills. If they’re going to lose a lot anyway, why not expand Coop’s skillset?
I think positions matter but to regulate how a player should play by its position is dumb.
Did any of you even play?
What would Kidd know about playing PG?
Isn’t he the guy who did the same with Giannis
Yes
From “Hit me” to “Don’t hit me”
I have no issue with him trying different things if they’re a normal bad team but in the beginning of the season they were living the myth of “win now if healthy” so it seemed silly to play him at PG to “win now”
Trying to “win now” and therefore believing AD and Kyrie would be healthy at the same time was far far sillier though! I’m convinced Kidd played him at PG partially to get Nico out of there lmao!
he did the exact same thing with Giannis, he turned out okay
Who?? Is that Thanasis’s brother? I bet he’s aiiight
Good for Kidd, he’s right here too btw.
I dont think Kidd is a particularly good coach but im sure the Mavs have one thing listed on the “to-do” list as a team until further notice, and thats to successfully develop Flagg, and theyre doing that so far.
He’s good at player development if he likes them and sees something in them. He fucked up Larry Sanders’ career but maybe became wiser with age
Mfs expect him to suit up and run point or what?
Guy with a proven track record of not knowing what he’s doing as a coach assures you he knows what he’s doing…
Especially having his own player spill his drink to make time. Guy knows wtf he is doing.
Woah just take it easy, man
Kidd might know a thing or two about the 1
kidd hasn’t been this animated since beating his wife
Coop has well adjusted his game and it’s good to see he working out those kinks
It already looks like it’s paying dividends. He’s improving rapidly as a decision maker and offense generator compared to early in the season. Kidd does have him on a fast track to being a true #1 option
OK I’ll bite I still think it’s stupid that he played him at point guard. No I didn’t play but you can develop a high level wing or point forward without playing him at point guard a position he never played at any level.
When Cooper is winning playoff series in the future he will not be the starting point guard just like Giannis was not the starting point guard when the bucks were winning series. Just as a reminder Kidd got fired from Milwaukee then the next coach won the title.
Such a tired talking point.
Coop looks good on ball. Maybe he wouldn’t look as good had he not gotten those ~10 games at PG. Just cause he didn’t do well at PG doesn’t mean it was bad for his development.
Coop’s own personal coaches acknowledged that it was a good decision to give him the ball.
I’ve seen plenty of former/current players say the same thing.
The kid is barely 19. This is a tanking year for them. Who gives a fuck if Kidd wants to be experimental in his development?
But no, reporters and redditors act like they have some god tier player development experience or something. Coop looks good now and it’s possible that Kidd played a big part in that by challenging him early in his career and forcing him to learn by failing. Who would have thought?
The problem with “Point Coop” was it was not supposed to be a tanking year for them.
He needs those on-ball reps to develop properly.
Killa Kidd unleashed
Yeah I’d listen to one of the best point guards to ever play the game
He didnt even let the guy finish his question. The journalist was likely going to praise him
homie was not playin that shit today
That’s my coach
Cooper playing on ball was a development move. Help speed up his game processing by putting him in situations with the ball that he had to make decisions fast. Likely slowed the game down a bit as well allowing him to be even better off ball. So pretty much throw him in the pool and make him swim.
fuck yeah Kidd
I think its perfect situation for Flagg.
Cooper flagg is a beast and he has the greenlight. That said, kidd is definitely a super creative tanker.
I mean…. do you not remember him doing this with Giannis? Criticism and built him into an all time player
Damn, those reporters are lucky someone didn’t have French fries…
just a reminder this guy is a wife beater
“It doesn’t matter. I don’t care. I don’t read it.”
Then how does it “make you better”?
jason no-kidd
Facts. JKidd knows more about ball than any reporter
No minutes played haters vs HoF point guard with a ring. Of course we know better.
If “composer” was a person lmao.
Didn’t blink the whole time he was talking
Didn’t Cleveland do the same thing with LeBron?
Still, the way he said this was really freaking asshole way to say it , you can do that a lot more tactfully
If there ever is a season that is good to tank to develop your franchise star, it’s the one where you actually get rewarded for a bad season.
Questioning a coach is fine, questioning a HoF point guard coach about point guard development….is…
Kidd is one of the best facilitators to ever play. Why THE FUCK would you not want him helping your franchise player learn to facilitate. I mean, holy shit.
He did the same thing for Giannis and had all of us shook! I don’t see why Flagg can’t do it. The media is just a bunch of morons fishing for click bait.
Read this in Tim Robinson’s voice
He almost had that Kenneth Copeland stare going on.
Alternate Angle
This is the most real post I’ve seen in here in months. It’s so true the real game isn’t checkers like most fans want to think. “Oh if you just zogged instead of zagged”, no these guys are using years of experience and intuition to make tight decisions based on scheme and strategies. It’s not just oh of player A took more there’s we win every game.
Kidd knows basketball but because you know basketball doesn’t mean everything you do is correct. He shouldn’t have tried to force the point forward on Flagg. Allow the game to come to him and then work on his flaws.
Who do you think you are? I am!
It’s just a question from a reporter. Why so hostile? You’re rich beyond every normal person’s wildest aspirations for one reason - people want to watch you and other players play a game. Grow up.
He only 19. I’m old.
JKidd should tell that reporter exactly how he feels and stop pussy footing around.
Anyone who complains about coop playing as the point guard… I’m not going to call you a casual. That’s the easy way out. You’re just fucking stupid and don’t know basketball
Don’t provoke a man that beat his wife
Impossible, r/nba convinced me they knew what the best development skills were for an 18 year old and not an all time great PG
This is the coach who knew to ask his player to spill his drink so he gets more time. I’m sure he knows wtf he is doing. Possibly if CP ever becomes a coach, he’d do the same things.
That a big dawg response, one of the greatest basketball minds we got, let Walter White cook
So now everyone is supposed just call him a good coach?
Yeah might as well learn from the jump before the player builds hes tendencies.
Kidd did that to get Nico fired.
I never thought it would be a long-term solution; neither was Giannis playing point guard. But Giannis playing point guard was good for his development, and it was always possible to do the same for Flagg
Do we forget point Giannis?
I would never fault a coach taking a player a maximizing his potential. More on a player as talented and with already so much developed abilities.
He’s 6’-9”, more likely will grow one or two inches more with a great talent to attack the basket and score with either. If you add early playmaking abilities it would benefit everyone around him
IDTR. Folks forget his influence on a young Giannis. GA arguably wouldn’t be who he is today without the Kidd foh
I love this from Kidd. What a baller.
This just in!!
The guy who made Giannis a star is being tasked with making Cooper Flagg a star! And he is using the same model!! More next week o. The SHIT REPORT!!!
Well shit, fine. I guess I was wrong.
He also played giannis at pg
What a loser
This is that Kevin Hart scene in 40yr old virgin when he goes to Smart Tech
“Looking for a N….. N here now”
Jason kidd aint fuckin kiddin around lmao smh
bald as hell
Every coach usually tries this, Pop tried it with Sochan. And Kidd kinda did it with Giannis. Sometimes it fails and sometimes it workes.
He’s talking to a bunch of redditors too lol — saw the exact same takes here about a month or so ago.
