[Alperen Şengün] Alperen on how to pronounce his last name, “…Gün, Gün sounds good.”
Sengooners in their caves rn
This is officially a thing now.
Şen gün means Gay day.
Gay day mate!
Goon?
Shen-goon
my favorite anime character
and yes u with the umlaut is oo
So Gün is goon
I’m also an Arsenal fan and we’re called Gooners lmao.
I really can’t escape it
Don’t have to ask me twice
i never understood people who say “Senn-goon” when if you watch a Rockets home game the announcers literally say “Shen-goon” & that’s like the easiest pronunciation
It’s like people mispronouncing Lauri Markkanen’s first name
You misspelled Lauren’s first name
Kyle Lowry Markkanen
Or people saying both Domas and Damontas (instead of Domantas).
Tbf the way he says his own name is very americanised
Lauri Markernan
I don’t understand why it’s culturally accepted to just mispronounce the hell out of every non-English-American name you encounter in this country lol. It’s really not that difficult to make an effort to learn native pronunciations of other people’s names. And honestly, it’s disrespectful to not.
Idk about you but my family is not from America and they are ESL and any time I travel to their country or other non-english speaking country, it is 100% acceptable to mispronounce american’s names, in fact if your name is “too difficult” they will just call you a completely different name in ANOTHER LANGUAGE thats “easy” for them to pronounce. So dont make this some american ignorance thing.
So dont make this some american ignorance thing.
Haha good luck with that. They live to make everything about that
People still pronounce banchero Ban-Chair-O lol
Well. I bet you pronounce Ginobili’s G like TCH, when it’s like a SH. she-NO-beal-e
IIRC, everybody pronounced like that.
My last name has 4 consonants in a row, in Spanish is murder. So I’ve always let everybody pronounce it like they feel.
But then you’d have to listen to the Rockets announcers, and is that a price that innocent people should pay?
i don’t think he realizes what he just did with sengoon
I’d usually think the toughest part for americans to get from his pronounciation rather than the ‘sen’ is the ‘gun’, but it seems I’d be wrong, apparently it’s the “sh-” “ss-” difference that gets english speakers
people who speak only english ironically can only fathom names being spelled phonetically
Mandarin is hard as fuck though. My wife is Taiwanese and I’m trying to learn but Jesus Christ, your TONE can change the word even an entire sentence based off of id you say the tone weird for one word.
Yeah, fuck up your tone and you’re asking to go to sleep instead of eating dumplings.
In Taiwan, nah. They just stare at you and ask you again and again. Like mam, I asked for noodles and not a couch. Why would I be asking you for a couch in a noodle shop?
Easily some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet even to foreigners they can be extremely nice but they refuse to acknowledge people make mistakes when speaking a second language
Also super safe if you ever go. Just don’t drive on the roads. Some stats will say they’re in the top 10 of safest countries and others have them slightly above us. I think some don’t include traffic. They turn from the sweetest people to pulling out a baton in the middle of the road
Idk I found it pretty fun driving in Taiwan
I find it terrifying each time. Scooters just zipping in and out around you, no care in the world?
Need to turn right? Turn your blinker on, no one coming so let’s start to turn
Oh nope, here comes a scooter going mach one all of a sudden
I do like the turn signal though. Wish we also had a countdown timer. Going to the parking garages is also interesting. I also love how people can just report other drivers via mail and camera footage of driving infractions and they get a ticket in the mail
Lmao I’m Taiwanese. I had my wedding there at ri yue tang.
Ah nice, my wife and mil( I know I’m supposed to call her mom, don’t worry!) are from Taichung but Ive been to a few other places. We plan on retiring early there before our 50s. It was a deal we made over 10 years ago.
But you know I’m right, safest place in the world until you hit the streets lol it’s like mad max driving
You’re not wrong.
My wife confirmed this just listening to it without looking. She knew all of it
She did say though that this is more of a poem and not really how they speak but also how they speak.
I have zero fucking idea what she means by that.
But English is a language that has a lot of words that aren’t pronounced the way it’s spelled. I think people are just lazy. Like what is hard about shen lol. Nothing. They just cannot be bothered to remember because it doesn’t matter to them.
That’s why he said ironically my dude.
The little squiggles above the letters is what messes us up.
[deleted]
thats the point i was making? i guess people dont understand the meaning of irony
It’s year 5… why is this still a thing?
Cause there’s a lot of willful ignorance in this country.
People don’t like going out of their way, and or like being told anything, even if its as miniscule as properly pronouncing a name 😂
Or, it’s because Sengun is a household name to people like us (on Reddit’s NBA subreddit) but not to the every day fan. If ESPN is trying to capture people who casually watch NBA they probably don’t know Sengun.
And, even if they’re a household name people have a hard time with some names like Antetokounmpo.
Its not hard to learn how to pronounce a name properly.
It’s one of the most basic common courtesies.
At a certain point its a person’s ignorance, not their inability or memory.
…Ask me how I know?
But again this segment is most likely geared towards the people who rarely watch Houston games. Or, people who rarely watch that much NBA. Maybe they’re at home on a Saturday and thought let me watch this HOU/DAL game. And, this looks like it’s pregame. I could understand more if it was post game and they were asking. Like you just heard my name all game. But, I would guess if you asked casual nba fans who Sengun plays for they’d have no clue
They’re not the people OP or I are really talking about then brother.
Are those people even watching the nba?
Yessir. A lot are in this sub too.
I mean, it is an American product after all. So it just kinda comes with the territory.
Defend him with your life
Shen-Guun
Thanks now I’m going to see shen yun ads all over this app.
The Galveston Gooner is wild for this.
Goon boy
The GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON
So Gün like this Günther?
Besides the obvious sh sound and the ü sound, the emphasis is on the first syllable. It’s not şenGÜN. It’s more ŞENgün.
Sai Gilgeous-Alexander because Americans can’t say “sh” I guess.
well Şengün doesn’t have “h” in his last name so what he said was correct
Kyrie is shaking his head
Gooner
It’s not like we don’t have the “sh” sound in English.
“what do your want to do tonight?”
“gün… gün sounds good”
Damn! Ole Chuck Wagon looks like he’s ready to get back on the court. He looks like he’s lost some weight. Good for him, looking healthy.
Our Goon kings!
He should just change it to Schengoon and Barkley could probably figure that one out.
I pronounce it Alperini Shenguzli
“valanchewing”
Shane Goon
Ja morant just requested to be traded to the rockets
He shall hereforth be known as “A. Gün”
Her gün
And his fans will be Güners
“Like ______ people say.”
What people? I swear he said cockroach people. 😂
Ive been learning Turkish for about six months now the ü sound is actually pretty tricky and hard to distinguish from the u sound. However I think “goon” is fine for an English pronounciation
Majority already call him shen-goon from what ive seen so bringing this up now is weird lol.
We’re still doing this shit?
It’s pronounced “floppy bitch.”
I thought this mf was mexican
Turkey is the Mexico of Europe
never thought that but no lie i kinda see it
I just go the dumb American route and say “Sen Gun” and move on with my day. Same with “Joe Kick” or “Don sick”. Idgaf if it’s wrong, I bend the words to my language god dammit.
Can he teach us how to flop and complain and throw elbows into our defenders’ stomachs next?
Edit: 0 sense of humour in this thread lmao
an OKC flair of all flairs is really saying this btw
Bro you really got the courage, AS A THUNDER FAN, to complain on floping? LMAO brother watch your own star player and you’ll see how floping really looks like
