[Highlight] Joel Embiid draws the charge as Zion Williamson bulldozes toward the basket
Ik every Sixers fan shrieked when that happened
i dont really worry about him on defense he always gets hurt driving to the hoop
unless fultz or siakam are involved
You should worry when Zion is involved.
For me it’s jumping for a rebound in traffic. So many guys hurt themselves by landing funny and I think (?) that embiid maybe tore a meniscus something years ago that way
Same
Call aside, you don’t try to make plays like this unless you trust your body. Good to see for Embiid
I was very surprised by it. He’s been going through the season without much issue it seems, so that’s good to see.
thats my biggest takeaway from this
Damn, how strong do you have to be to knock down the biggest person in the NBA.
The only person who can knock down the second* biggest person in the NBA is the first.
Zion is huge but no way is he bigger than Embiid right?
zion listed at 284. embiid at 280.
Is it Edey?
I was more impressed the time when he knocked Steven Adams back from the top of the restricted area to the baseline. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62pFXKvrVyg
One of the few times where Embiid legitimately got bowled over as opposed to flopping
Embiid flops a lot but he also just falls a lot because he would rather land on his ass instead of his knees.
Still sliding.
The other defender is allowed to shove him twice though?
Like getting hit by a jeep Going 30 mph
Left foot is sliding, that’s a block
Brother IDC if your foot is sliding if an offensive player drives into a defensive player like that it should be a charge. It used to be
Bro, Zion is driving to the hole and Embiid is getting there late. That’s a clear block.
Late? He’s there for half an hour
It’s honestly not even about the feet, maybe you’re too young for it but it’s about the angle of the shoulder and the initiation of contact. But even looking at the feet you gotta slow it down to even see maybe he wasn’t completely set.
I understand what I’m talking about might not make sense to you, but to me the fact offensive players feel they can even drive like this is bad for the game and needs to be reigned in by the officials. If your shoulder is in the chest - charge. IDC if you’re short that’s one of the inherent disadvantages of being shorter in the NBA. Figure out other ways to generate offense through footwork and mid-range jumpers.
What I see first is Barlow begins sliding into Zion’s path so Zion picks up his dribble - from that moment on he can’t stop. You can either interpret the next second, as you have, that Zion is being reckless going full steam to the basket with Embiid in the vicinity. Or, my take, is that Embiid steps in front of him and is just a few milliseconds late to “beat him to the spot” and hasn’t established position, which I base off his left foot still sliding and him leaning his right shoulder into Zion’s path to the basket.
If you think the fact Zion is in the wrong simply because his shoulder hits Embiid’s chest, I think that’s going to happen anytime the offensive player is driving to the hoop with one defender making contact on one side and he picks up his dribble and then another defender steps in front on his other side and he gets sandwiched.
Again, I understand that you think just because Zion started a motion, he’s entitled to it. That’s the NBA today, and I’m not arguing what he did was strictly against current NBA rules.
What I’m saying is, there was a time where it didn’t matter if an offensive player “already started a motion,” if they ran into a defender like in that video it was an offensive foul. The very thought that he can initiate movement like that - where to someone who knows the old way looks at it and thinks of it as reckless use of his body from the very outset of deciding to gather+drive in that manner - that is an issue with today’s game and needs to be reigned in.
It’s not constricting skill to say driving like that is illegal. Great players find ways to score within the rules. The skill expression comes from finesse and footwork. It’s what makes our sport special and distinct from things like football, soccer, etc where there just isn’t much restriction on the actions your body can take in relation to the ball/the construction of the defense. Basketball is supposed to be different where the greats can use their expertise of the footwork/fundamentals to outplay defenders based on skill, not athleticism where the guy who can drive to the hoop most aggressively scores a lot
Again, I’m cool with it if you don’t agree. But this game today looks so much less like skill expression and just athletic expression which is cool but… The point of basketball is combining elite skill with athleticism. I’m tired of seeing guys that don’t look like they could score without the 3+step gather era. I’m tired of seeing dunks+3’s. I’m actually fine with the 3’s, it’s like if my favorite player of the 90s was Reggie mixed with MJ (but not as good as either, except Steph). But they gotta reign in the easy access to the layups/dunks. Middy’s aren’t going to come back unless the officiating makes it harder to get to the paint. I want all 3 mixes of shots - great dunks/layups, elite mid range, and highlight 3’s - that only happens with a change to officiating dribble drives/post play.
If anything his left is sliding back towards the rim. It’s my understanding that even if you’re not fully set it’s still a charge if you were sliding back
So what? Nothing in the rules state you have to have your feet set, you only need to be in legal guarding position to be able to draw a charge.
Ya looking at that replay he’s not set
Bad call
