The way people talk about wemby I always thought he was agile enough to guard 1-5. But I have seen several players completely cook him on the perimeter this year.
When he is gassed and frustrated he looks like a different player. He is still so young and I think he is so well spoken that we forget he really is still a maturing 22 year old.

Locked in Wemby can legit guard 1-5. But sometimes, like today, you get lethargic Wemby that does nothing but look lost, tired and disinterested on both ends of the floor.
Not for 48 minutes though. Nobody has enough energy to do everything the entire game. You can put him there if you need a stop, but having him guard the perimeter is just a waste of his capabilities and needlessly drains his energy.
No matter how locked in wemby is, he cannot guard a quick PG far out on the perimeter. Thats just straight glazing
I think its like an old Miami Bron thing, where when he’s locked in he can definitely stick with anyone. But he’s not doing that for an entire game. Bron and Wemby are both terrifying because when the game is on the line if they have the energy left they can just hit another gear and take over on that end.
However its very draining and so they need to conserve that energy for key moments instead of genuinely guarding them for the whole game.

Number wise Rudy is elite on the perimeter- especially for a big. But even he gets cooked sometimes and those highlights- like the Luka shot- are what people remember more. Not all the other times people brick shots trying to go at him.
It’s so easy to create narrative from a highlight like this. Let’s give Lamelo and Miller some credit. Those guys have cooked so many bigs and Wemby just didn’t have his A game today. Shit happens.

Not that this is even a bad thing. There is no DPOY level rim protector who can actually consistently guard elite perimeter players on an iso. Gobert, Wemby, etc are all DPOY level players because of their help defense rim protection.
Well considering Luka IS a perimeter player, I think the comparison is completely pointless. We expect players like Luka to be able to play on the perimeter, but not Wemby.
So it’s almost as if I wrote that comment taking into account that Wemby is in fact a 7 footer and not a guard.
So with context, he did what he could. His two choices were to give up the easy 3 for LaMelo and take away the drive by sagging off, or face guard and give up the blow by.

There has never been a 7 footer in the history of the game that can step out to the logo on a guard and not get cooked to some extent. You are the one gaslighting if you are trying to suggest that is not true lol

“sending someone into help defense” usually involves a player trying to keep close with their guy and guiding him into a trap, thats not wat happened at all.
ur right, most 7fters cant keep up with a guard but 1. wemby is supposed to be an alien freak and 2. most of them would at least attempt to slide their feet. wemby got burned here, theres no amount of “meh it was just good offense” that negates that
If a 7 footer steps out on a guard like that there are two choices. You give them space to avoid the blow by which guarantees they get enough room to dance for a comfortable 3 point shot. Or you try to face guard and it’s guaranteed you get blown by.
Those are the only two choices.
To your point about Wemby supposedly being this alien, his defensive impact is unprecedented and clear as day. Doesn’t mean he doesn’t get beat multiple times a game. Doesn’t mean he can stick guards at the logo. No one has suggested he can do that lol.
