Pretty much. Nate Duncan has pointed this out repeatedly on his podcast. We saw Dame do this a little bit in Portland at the end. They clearly re-signed Jerami Grant to a massive contract because they knew/thought Dame wanted them to keep him. If Dame had requested a trade they probably would have let Grant walk or at least played hardball and not given him what was clearly going to be a bad contract.

You can be unhappy with a situation and not want to leave, there’s levels to this. More often than not giannis’ comments have been meant to make the FO go in further than they have, not so much push for a trade. Otherwise, he would have just asked for a trade. The whole idea of a trade request being made public is to put a clock on it. Basically by this point in the star relationship, everyone knows the situation is irreperable. That’s the process with every star that asks out.

Shams doesn’t really get things like this wrong. I remember when he reported on Jimmy Butler wanting a trade from the Heat and both Jimmy and agent vehemently denied it, leading a lot of Heat fans to fall into the trap of thinking Shams was a liar. Lo and behold, Shams was right the whole time.

Same thing here, the New York thing was obviously true. The trade request from his agent was obviously true. Giannis playing both sides but never denying his agents words is true too, and that’s what made it even more obvious.

This is a two way street. Buck want Giannis for his whole career and be a contender with him, Giannis wants to stay in Milwaukee and build a contender there. However, at this point, both sides have realised that the contender part probably won’t happen. This is the point, where both sides know it’s gonna be a divorce, both side know the other knows this as well, but neither side said they want a divorce, yet. Given the huge public opinion impact of how the divorce actually happens, it’s a game of chicken and subtle-to-obvious hints.

We actually saw the same with Portland and Lillard, where this dance lasted for more than a season.

Or things change. I’m always shocked at how the general public view public figures as static beings who are held to an inhuman standard of being the same through changing contexts.

Social media trades in people’s opinions being “right”. You see it here people taking victory laps about “it was obvious the whole time”. It’s fucking lame as hell. A player can absolutely be loyal while also choosing to move on. Dame Lillard did the exact same thing, but the narrative is different with him so he remains relatively untouched by dumb discussions like this. Situations change, so do people’s wants. That’s how real life works; get used to it.

When Shams goes on Pat McAfee one of things he always mentions (cause they bring him on for these rumors and such) is he has sources he stands on his reporting and such. I’m sure he still misses and I’m sure there is enough out there to tell me I’m wrong but I’ve never known Shams to stick his neck out that far and not be sure of what he’s saying

IMO, I don’t know if I could in good faith trade for Giannis unless I am a team at the edge of winning a championship because I don’t see Giannis as being a 100% cut throat winner like a Kobe or Lebron because he has cost himself championships due to nepotism. Imagine instead of signing his brother in 2019 they would have signed Dort or Naz Reid as undrafted free agents. That sounds like enough to get them past the heat or extend the teams success. Do this for multiple years and you end up at the current situation as a franchise. If you are trade for him, then be prepared to go all in for the next 2-3 years before you have to trade him again. Golden State seems like the best fit because Steph only has a couple of years left.

Unlike Woj, traditionally Shams has been pretty player and agent informed. Feel like that’s changed a bit since Woj retired, but I still don’t think that Shams is as tapped in with FO’s as Woj was, would be really hard to be on a pure time basis honestly. Woj was just working the phones for way longer and had built up a certain reputation.

The point is that you used to be able to get a feel from Shams what Agents and players were saying and from Woj what FOs were thinking.

From the timeline of this saga, I think giannis wanted out when Kris was traded and dame went down, so he approached horst about it. Bucks new ownership wanted to keep him at all cost. Of course right he is their cash cow. So Horst did all these moves to try to keep him telling giannis let’s give this a chance. Giannis did it gave his all in the beginning of the season. But the team couldn’t win without him, and the booing came. He had enough and made it official.

I don’t care if he’s right or wrong, he’s still annoying as fuck and his style of “journalism” is a stain on the sport and society. Talk about the games. Talk about the teams. I think that, regardless of what he has personally said, he has been joined by dozens of other network personalities and journalists who are saying similar things, particularly Windhorst, who often have dubiously sourced or downright incorrect information. It certainly sours his reporting to get placed into the ‘Giannis Rumors’ bin, which has been filled with crap for years. I’ve never seen another player photoshopped into so many team jerseys for speculative articles before and we may never see it again. 

Again, Shams aside, the rest of the media did such a piss poor job of hiding its disdain for Giannis staying in Milwaukee that Shams has been lumped in with them

I think that’s overly critical. Gianni being vocal about staying helps increase his trade value, and it doesn’t raise extra distractions to the team (outside his private requests).

People were very critical of Harden and Butler acting out and being a nuisance to get traded, Giannis was doing the opposite. He was playing hard and reaffirming his support for the Bucks; with of which help Miluakee get more value.

Giannis feels like he acted that way for more than long enough, and now he’s openly requesting the trade to expedite the process. It sucks for Miluakee but he handled this with the class you want a star player to handle with.
