Ortho is an extremely physically demanding speciality, which is why a lot of med students have no interest in it despite the potential for a ridiculous amount of money.
This guy seems very nice, but they also have a reputation for being total intense hot heads in the OR/hospital. Which makes sense considering the level of stress they’re sometimes under and the inherent nature of their work. It’s not very delicate heart valve surgery using tweezers and a magnifying glass.
For the uniformed, what makes it so demanding vs other specialties?
There’s a lot of sawing, drilling, and hammering. It’s like being a carpenter. Some procedures require screwing plates into bones or inserting metal rods or even hammering nails into bones. Think about how much bone manipulation may factor into certain procedures, particularly if they affect long bones. Plus, some people are just huge, and you have to manipulate and reorient their muscles/skeleton to fix whatever they’ve suffered. Hip replacement surgeries in particular can look downright barbaric in the OR.
They also usually stand in fixed positions for hours at a time, using X-ray to guide them (the X ray tech in the room does this, but again, it’s a mix of having to very delicate with where you’re inserting thing and yet strong enough to force things into their proper place and orientation).
I once saw a spinal fusion surgery where the surgeon is literally using a hammer and just whacking away at certain screws and rods to fuse lower lumbar vertebrae to help alleviate back pain a patient had been experiencing for years.
It’s a money maker, but also very difficult to secure a residency and then do as a career. These guys (it’s very male dominated) easily burn out.

And that’s what you want because I think it’s true to say a lot of people in his position who have the career and make the money he does they can act as arrogant and cocky as they want and they can get away with it because of what they do and how successful they’ve been. I find a lot of the time they feel like they have the right to do that. I don’t think so but that’s the energy sometimes they give off. I just saw an eye doctor a month ago who gave off that energy of “I’m the best doctor you’ve ever seen because I went to eye doctor (optometry?) school” energy and it was very off-putting
