Jaylon Tyson: “I was cut my 9th grade year, I was told I wasn’t athletic enough… I’ll never let nobody say that about me ever again.” -Donovan Mitchell: “Michael Jordan got cut too.” -Jaylon Tyson: “I’m not Michael Jordan.”
excited for the future of the league with all new ways to spell the name Jalen
Jayhlen J’Len
League isn’t ready for the influx of Asian players named J’Lin
We’ll settle for being called “Jeremy” down at the park any time we score on a non-Asian.
Better than Yao, bro I’m 5’5 I play nothing like Yao Ming.
Not with that attitude. Get in the paint and grab some boards.
Well do think we have the same vertical jump
20 years ago the guys at my gym chanted “Yao Ming! Yao Ming!” every time I scored. I’m 5’8” so it made no sense to me. They were Chinese too so it was even more WTF.
There’s actually a really great African American electronic artist with that name. Dark Energy is an awesome album
That’s J’Len bias
This is a better reference than you’re getting credit for.
Heart stopping, really
Don’t know whether to downvote or upvote this

Wait why haven’t I seen a girl named this yet? It’s a no brainer.
Well do I have news tour you! r/tragedeigh
I work with someone whose name is spelled “Hayleigh.” I’ve always found it pretty odd when parents decide to add a bunch of unnecessary, non-phonetic letters to their kid’s name.
Hahahaha all of these names remind me ofJa’mie
Jeighlun
J Lin (Last Name)
There was a guy on the Oklahoma Sooners football team this season with the first name “R”
R Mason. the R isn’t an initial, the Mason isnt a middle name; the full first name is R Mason.
baller
Thanks I got so fucking confused looking at that name. Having a space in your first name is pretty badass ngl.
Harry S. Truman vibes.
^First white Jalen.

The amount of Jalens we have is the influence of the Fab Five and Jalen Rose right? I’m seeing the spike of names here and it seems to align with his time in college and the league. Trying to think if there’s another name that might have set this off with a predominantly Black demographic.
Although there are Jalens older than Rose, his mother independently came up with it by combining his father’s and uncle’s names, James and Leonard, and his success in college made it popular.
An ESPN investigation uncovered a man in Florida, Jalen Shepherd, who was born in 1970, three years before Rose. Shepherd said in a podcast he was named after his mother, Jacqueline, and his father, Allen. source
I was at checkout in a grocery store one time and the woman in front of me looked at the cashier’s name tag that said “Treshawna” and was like “oh I like your name” and the cashier replied “Yeah I was named after my mom Trisha and her sister Shawna”. People do be combining names!
I dated a Dennisia lol
Denise and Felicia?
Went to school with a girl named Roilin, pronounced Roy Lynn

The only fully Chinese-American to make the NBA is a J Lin. It all makes sense now.
fully Chinese-American
Man that is a more loaded phase than you realize, especially because Jeremy Lin is Taiwanese-American
TAIWAN NUMBER ONE
he is an ethnic chinese taiwanese though
Yes, for sure he shares an ethnicity with the vast majority of Chinese people.
Adding more to why I said it was loaded though, the vast majority of Chinese people are part of an ethnic group called the Han people. A lot of people will also refer to that ethnicity as the Han Chinese people or just simplify it to Chinese, but Taiwanese people sometimes will just call it Han or distinguish themselves as Taiwanese Han or Taiwanese Chinese Han or some variant of that.
Obviously Jeremy Lin’s ethnicity is not really different from 95% of mainland China, and as an American his experiences with his identity are going to be different than those of someone growing up in China or Taiwan, and he probably doesn’t care a ton about if you call him Chinese or Taiwanese. But there is a ton of history and culture and politics around the existence and identity of Taiwan and its people and I find it pretty interesting, and there’s also some interesting stuff about non-Han people in China and Taiwan but at this point I’m rambling.
J.J. Lynne
Full name: Jaelenne Jayelinn Lynne
Jaelenne Jayelinn is together his full first name.
His middle name is Jae.
Does Jaylon Tyson make the starting lineup of Ja(len|ylin|ylon)s?
Yailen
Jalen Rose’s mom needs some type of cut from somewhere for creating an entirely new name that took over the NBA
Lmao I thought his name was pronounced Jay-lohn
Soon enough we will have JayLin sanity

Ja’Lynn Polk is a bust WR drafted by the Patriots who now plays for the Saints.
He was graded the worst WR in the NFL by advanced metrics.
Jhaylen will be the first full-blooded Filipino
Yep the Asians will come in with a Xeilin
Donovan was waiting the whole time to say that lmao
Literally had to fake clear his throat and rub that chin harder to make sure he waited for dude to finish talking 😂
Head nod x3, clear throat x3, he’s got the approach down
the mmm he was ready to cook
Moved the mic as well
Had to try to get him back for that LeBron comment lol
He knew he had to instigate after Tyson instigated on his interview lol
[deleted]
I don’t know about Donovan’s past but the way he nodded right away made me think the same thing happened to him, in which case you know he spent his whole life since telling himself that just for Tyson to say “I dunno about that” lmao
Getting cut and not being allowed on varsity as a freshman are two different things
I remember my dad told me the story of how Jordan got cut, after I got cut from the basketball team in 8th grade. I didn’t give up. Instead, I kept at it trying to improve my game. So much so, I also got cut from the basketball team in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade.
If only I would have known Jordan made the team, and proceeded to score 30 a game on JV, perhaps I wouldnt have wasted so much of my time lol.
You should have told your dad, “I am not Michael Jordan”.
“Dad I’m 5’5” with no vertical, just let me play tennis”
All the tennis greats are tall as hell too
Not Michael Chang!
I’m not Michael Chang
They’re like 6’-6’2, obviously above average height, but they tiny compared to NBA
I would say 6’2 fits under the “tall as hell” statement. I think 6’2 is right where you start calling people tall as hell though
Tell that to Olivier Rochus
Really though Agassi is 5’11, not exactly super tall
“Sorry, son. You aren’t smart enough for tennis.”
my parents were going to name me Michael Jordan, my dad was like, I don’t think he can live up to it, so they named me Michael Jared.
I got cut from my 9th grade team, and from there proceeded to eschew any organized sport and focused on smoking pot and listening to punk music.
what about 12th grade?
I made my grade 9 team but was a benchwarmer. Come around to grade 10 tryouts we have a series of 3 tryouts and after the first tryout the coach posted who a list of players who had already made the team in lauding myself so for the final 2 tryouts the group of us did some conditioning separate from the tryouts. Come around to the day when the final team gets posted outside the basketball gym door and my name isn’t on the list. I was completely devasted.
People act like not being varsity til their junior/senior year is getting cut to make more of a story than it is
Let’s be real, if you don’t make varsity as a junior, it’s probably time to hang it up
Why? Playing basketball as a senior in high school is fun. It’s supposed to be for fun.
I’m so glad I went to a small school for this reason. Playing basketball is supposed to be fun, but if you go to a school of any size or importance, it’s gonna be filled to the brim with tryhards who have been coached since birth to be the next MJ or Bron, and good luck getting a spot on a team in that case. Forever relegated to playing rec ball at the park with no refs and dickheads who think grabbing your whole dick and nuts isn’t a foul
There was a good article about this in The New Yorker, i think. TLDR is 20+ years ago, kids were playing for fun in the park and constantly inventing new strategies while messing around. People became great in the trial and error
Now every kid goes to the same camps, specialized schools, etc. Coaching has become a lot more standardized and rigid where the potentially great players already start their NBA style coaching and travel teams by the time they’re in middle school. A lot less fun and way more structured
I’m usually anti “back in my day” takes, but I think this one is definitely truer now than when I was in high school
I mean if you had any doubts at all just look at Aomine Daiki, probably one of the greatest scoring talents we’ve ever seen, and he credits his unorthodox “free-spirited” style to playing basketball as a kid, just having fun and trying things
I got cut as a junior but only because God dang Iman shumpert played my same position.
There are always exceptions, but I will stand by my comment in 95% of cases
You comment stands in 99% of cases.
There are many, many, many more schools that might have 1 or 2 d-1 players per decade come out of them than there are schools that have 5+ in a single year.
Sure, keep on playing and trying if you enjoy it, but if you’re not on varsity as a junior then you have, at most, one more year of organized ball in you.
Idk if my high school ever produced 1 D1 basketball player lol. We have 1 NFL player (he was solid too). I think that’s all for professional sports lol
What a weirdo comment. If you’re not 6’3+ then you have like a 0.0001% chance to make the league. People play high school basketball for fun/exercise, not just to make the NBA.
Buddy of mine went from 5’7” to 6’5” from the start of his freshman year to the start of his sophomore year. Bones hurt so much he could barely run let alone play sports.
Then he was All-State in hoops lol. Some people don’t develop until sophomore or junior years. It’s fine.
Ya I thought at first he was saying he didn’t make freshman or JV, which would be crazy
Yes, also I get the intent, but Mitchell is essentially misreading what Tyson is saying. More simply, Tyson is saying, “even Michael Jordan got cut (so it’s not a big deal if you got cut).” It’s embedded that Mitchell is not Jordan.
Do we know which one applies to Tyson?
This is such a blatant, spouted lie. I’m glad someone mentioned this
my school didnt even allow freshman to be varsity, they only let up to 2 freshman be on JV also
Tyson has by far been the biggest surprise of the year, he started showing signs toward the end of last year but he’s been winning us games this year. Love the development
he was a DAWG at cal, i’m not surprised he’s started figuring it out now
I remember noticing how crisp his shooting form looked in summer league this year but didn’t expect this much of a leap.
Pretty clearly a top 5 pick if you were to do a redraft of 2024 right now - insane
I’m a shameless Cavs homer, but I’m not sure that I’d go as far as saying it’s a certainty.
Castle and Sarr are the definites, and then I think Ware and Mitchell both have to be there based off their progression this season. From there the last spot pits Tyson against Clingan, Wells, Buzelis and Edey as the main contenders. It also depends how you feel about Edey, Shead, Kyshawn George, McCain, Holland and Sheppard.
Fuckin embarrassed my Sixers a few weeks ago
Funny enough I went to the same high school Jaylon went to and also didn’t make the team my freshman year. However, I did not make the NBA.
That’s funny, I did.
Tyson????
Whatsup bro good hooping with you, Miss McDonnell’s third period was wild bro
Yet
How was he on JV
lmao allen eagles baby
He went to JPII
I don’t think freshman year tho?
You’re not Jaylon Tyson.
and Jaylon took that personally.
Brandin Podziemski, “I’m the white MJ”
Michael Jordan won 6 titles in Chicago! With a bunch of scraps!
In hindsight winning in Chicago is a much bigger deal than we probably thought at the time
Literally the only times in franchise history where they were a good team were the MJ years and the few prime DRose years
hey y’know what? SHUT UP
40ish games of deballzach beg to differ
Legacy points added
Tyson must have heard me call him a G-leaguer after the first few games of the season.
The crow tastes GREAT.
I was in the Cavs sub watching yall talk shit and I was so confused. He was doing all the right things, everything just wasn’t clicking yet. You can take the right shots and make the right passes but that doesn’t mean the shot will always go in.
Can we debunk the Jordan got cut story a bit.
He tried out for varsity as a sophomore. Coach wasn’t like “you’re trash.” He still played JV, then had a growth spurt.
Michael Jordan getting cut and Albert Einstein failing math are two urban legends that just won’t end.
Richard Gere gerbil
He like man you not about have MJ stans sending me death threats , no sir 😅
MJ fans aint like that. only Lebron stans are crazy enough
MJ Stans have dentures now, they ain’t listening to podcasts.
Jordan was a NCAA and olympic champion before ever stepping on a nba court..
you gotta be an NCAA champ beforehand… it wouldn’t make sense otherwise.
Give it another year or two, college rules are changing fast
Can’t players who skipped college technically go back for eligibility like LeBron or Dwight?
i think once you receive money to play professionally, you are no longer eligible for NCAA sports, but exceptions have been made to play in other sports. Basically once you’re a professional athlete, the NCAA commission has to approve your amateur status in the sport you are looking to compete in.
No.
For now. That might change soon with how things are going.
Jaylon Tyson generational media run
Glad he cleared that up
“I was cut my 9th grade year… and that’s when I took it personally.”
Cut from varsity in 9th grade? Or cut from the JV or Freshman team? Especially athletes that attend private High Schools, do most future NBA players start on varsity in 9th grade?
Jaylon Tyson could have waited a few games before going off. He absolutely eviscerated us.
All that matters is the playoffs. Nice to see the kid doing well, but Spida and this team havent advanced beyond the second round. East is pretty wide open so we’ll see which teams young players step up
The Jordan story is so overblown. He was placed on JV instead of varsity as a sophomore. It’s one of the most common things ever. That didn’t “create the dog in him” - the reason he took such deep offense to it and made it part of his “story” is because of the dog in him. He has always been an egotistical maniac and found a way to make everything personal.
And if he hadn’t of had his growth spurt the next year it never would’ve mattered anyways
RIP Larry Jordan’s pro career
Why does Jaylon Tyson sound like some weird fusion of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum lol
I too was cut from in the 9th grade and I was told I wasn’t athletic enough.
Turns out they were right.
“I’m not Michael Jordan… I’m Jaylon Tyson”
Bro is on an all time glazing spree
Vibes are immaculate. My man.
MJ being cut is a myth. He simply didn’t make the varsity team as a freshman and sophomore, and played JV. Like most freshmen and sophomores.
Dillon Brooks vibes guy.
Am I the only one that autocorrects his name to Jayson Tatum? There are too many damn JTs in this league lol
This guy should win MIP but that award is so trash
Hahahaha at least thw brotha is selfaware
You seen the on court interview?
He was hyping up his teammate. He’s humble when it comes to himself. He loves to do the little things and calls himself a role player.
People still don’t want that Jordan smoke lol
Like the kids swag. Definitely a dawg. Hopefully he keeps backing up that talk. Otherwise he’ll just be another Memphis grizzly
Donovan laughs like an unc
Tyson’s self-awareness is refreshing - he knows he’s not MJ, he just wants to prove he belongs. That kind of hunger without the ego is what makes role players succeed in the NBA.
Jaylon Tytaum
A reminder that his brother is gonna be a first round pick in the nfl draft this year
What a punch line. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
LOL 😂
Donovan’s affirmation “mmhmm” was killing me
Pretty sure Michael Jordan was never cut. He just didn’t make varsity at an age you’re not supposed to make varsity.
I’d have been like, “You heard him, folks. Donovan Mitchell says I’m as good as Jordan” 🤣
And Mitchell ain’t LeBron btw 😂😂
What would you expect out of guy named jAyLOn
God I love their chemistry. DG is fun but this makes me feel better about a trade of DG. I think Donovan just needs to be our PG but make sure he’s surrounded by other good ball handlers.
Tyson Mobley Potentially New player from trade Porter Jr is capable (off the bench)
Tyson has attached himself to Mitchell and it’s so important. His ceiling keeps going up and as a Cavs fan, I’m so excited for his future. He is FOR SURE a starting caliber player. I’d likely have him at the 2 just because he’s more of a 2 height wise.
Scarface got cut too
well I’m assuming Jaylon Tyson isn’t 6 ft 6 in the 9th grade
Jae’Lyn.
That’s a common lie…Jordan was never cut
The title is so confusing I have no idea who said what. Michael Scott. Wayne Gretzky.
MJ didn’t make the varsity team as a sophomore, a little different than getting cut.
Jail’em
J Linsanity
MJ got cut from Varsity as a FRESHMAN! They always leave out that very important detail.
dallas legend!
Jahlin
MJ got cut as a freshman for Varsity ball.
Yeah, glad we made that clear.
