The only teams looking to hire Doc should be young teams without real contending expectations.

Hes the definition of a floor raiser as a coach not a ceiling raiser.

He gets jobs because he’s affable. Veteran players usually like him, he’s seen as a “safe” hire for the front office that won’t rock the boat with fans or local media, and I assume he’s likable in person so ownership likes him.

Because of this it takes some time for teams to figure out that he’s just not a great basketball coach.

You can read the testimonies from Bucks fans who watched it in this very thread. They have specific examples. Defenses were badly designed and didn’t work. Offense was just hoping Giannis and Dame can make some magic. Barely beat bad teams, lost badly to good teams.

It was the first half of a season and there’s lots of teams to pay attention to at that time. Its hard to evaluate the coach of a team you’re not following closely, but the Bucks fans say he was awful and national pundits I trust (like Zach Lowe) said the same thing.

He wasn’t that pissed but more perplexed until he had a conversation with Kerr, Klay with Kerr breaking down the new offense.. I was a gleague dub staffer

That reason was Durant and Kyrie, and is all the more reason KD’s “I just wanna hoop” PR stuff is so annoying. He’s tried to be like LeBron behind the scenes, but post Golden State the stuff he’s wanted, like pushing for Beal, has been awful.

This does say more than other speculation could ever say, because NBA front offices actually have the ability to call Milwaukee and say “so… What’s the deal with Adrian Griffin?”

He seems like simultaneously a bible thumper and an asshole, which is not a combo these young, black millionaires are likely to take to.

Look at Mark Jackson as a similar coach who people felt was unfairly dismissed, and unsurprisingly was both a bible thumper and an asshole.

To be honest I’ve interpreted most of this as pure cope. Bucks fans keep saying he sucked and the team was winning despite him but they also tanked completely the second he was canned? I do not think that was coincidence

People were overly critical of Griffin because they were upset about everything not being perfect all the time. They got embarrassed in the 2023 playoffs, and like Mazzulla’s first year coming off the finals trip under Udoka, a large portion of fans hated everything he was doing. Even after a championship, people still didn’t want Mazzulla. They tripled down on disliking him. Now he’s seen as one of the best coaches in the league.

I feel this sort of happened with Griffin where the playoff loss stung so bad that anything other than perfection was imperfect and flawed and bad.

The difference is the Celtics front office trusted their decision and let Mazzulla lead. Griffin was given 43 games and then they panicked, just like they panicked to acquire Lillard, just like they panicked to try and add Turner.

Some of this is probably attributed to Tatum and Brown’s willingness to just trust whatever happens around them and be low maintenance. Giannis is a bit more of a diva and probably put more pressure on the front office which led to poor decision making.

Maybe Griffin wasn’t the right guy for the job, but Bucks ownership didn’t give him a chance. What was he supposed to do? Go 33-10? 38-5? 43-0? Would Nick Nurse have led them to a better record by that point? Would any other coach?

Too many band-aid decisions rather than trusting their own choices. Doc was just another band-aid and fans were coping it away saying the defense looked better under Doc.

The entire team hated Griffin. Hiring Doc was a horrendous decision though.

I don’t think anyone thinks the 2016 Cavs are a worse team than the Bucks, I was just bringing up another example of a rookie head coach with a very good record being canned mid-season.
