Jeremy was on a podcast talking about how the NBA has lectures about personal finance for all rookies, and they’re all told that the average NBA career is only 3 years. Glad he made it over the hump but kinda bummed that it never worked out for him on the Spurs

Felt like he never got the time to gain the confidence. Things were going great the start of last year, but he got injured. This season he just seems to be in Mitch’s dog house. I hope he gets time and is allowed to play his position at his next stop.

Ellis is averaging 17.4mpg, but has played 18+ minutes in 18 games this season. Sacramento’s record when Ellis plays 18+ minutes - 1 win, 17 losses.

He’s an alright player, but he’s not this game-changer that’s being held back in Sacramento that is going to bring in a big trade haul and reach stardom on a new team.

He’s still good. Problem is Castle and Luke are better. If the Spurs had more shooters like say Boston, he’d fit well. Problem is Luke and Castle (both big minute guys) can’t play with him. It doesn’t help Wemby has been out / on limited minutes a lot too.

Primo was bad, but if you look through the 2022 draft it is an absolute grave yard of misses. Having picks 9/20/25 in that draft isn’t the value that it would be in other drafts. Also, I’m still on Blake Wesley island, he is still very young. Whe he is healthy, I think he has a shot at doing well in Portland.

The Spurs, they would be trading 2 non rotation players and picks to add a situational player on an expiring contract when their center rotation is fine. There’s no real gain there

The agent will negotiate an extension with another team before that team commits to trading assets for Sochan. Without permission, agents cannot do this

Because without permission, other teams having direct communication with the player or their agent falls under tampering.

Because (although everyone knows it happens) it technically isn’t allowed for contracted players. You can’t just go around promising future deals with players who are still under contract with their other teams.

The reality is that there is clearly some grey area. Players have a right to plan for their future (and their next contract) and trades/requests rarely ever happen without discussions already happening about this stuff. No team is giving up major assets without knowing their chances of keeping a guy long term, and there is also not something magical thing that happens on free agency opening night where everyone agrees to a new contract at midnight.

I suspect that, for Jeremy, the writing had been on the wall for a couple of months, and that these conversations had already started. This just makes it official that he can look elsewhere, and the Spurs would probably agree to basically anything, but bad money, in a deal to move him. My guess is an unwanted RFA for another unwanted RFA in a “pre-Agency” type of move. (Giving each team a few months to look at the new guy before deciding on the next contract).

As a Spurs fan, I love Sochan. He’d still be here if he could play small ball 5.

We do love ~6’8 defenders who can’t shoot, it’s kinda our thing. One time we actually turned him into a shooter (OG) and now we have I can fix him syndrome

But those minutes are all going to CMB for the foreseeable future. Sochan wants PT not to sit on a different bench behind a rookie of all people

The other players need to play solid help defense and then also need to be able to shoot 3 because Sochan can’t play with big minute players who can’t space (Luke + Castle)

d think there should always be a role in the league for bigger, versatile, defenders who can effectively cover 1-4 (and some small ball 5’s), but his offence has just been so hard to fit

A shooting team like Boston would fit him well.

He just has zero confidence whatsoever on offense. He doesn’t want to shoot, he holds the ball too long, he drives into the paint and gets boxed in because he hesitates and ends up making a bad pass out, just incredibly indecisive overall. I still think there’s a good player somewhere in Jeremy, but this team’s timeline has progressed a lot quicker than people expected and we don’t have the minutes to give a guy who has been a net zero on offense and has quite literally the team’s worst +/- this season in super limited minutes.

How did he fall out of the rotation?

• Castle - starting lineup
• Luke - backup and majority big (when Wemby out)

Spurs just don’t have enough shooting to make up for 2 bad shooters in any given lineup. Castle is a shorter version of Sochan but better at ball handling and playing PG aka a more well rounded Sochan.

Castle essentially is the writing on the wall and Spurs elected to focus on him (as they are giving him a lot of time at the starting PG right now), even over Fox.

I think lightly Carter Bryant was the final nail in the coffin (athletic defensive wing, but can shoot the 3) - I think they decided with the 10th man minutes to throw them at Carter and he’s slowly finding his way.

Damn near 0 growth on the offencive end in 2 years is pretty much it and we have plenty of guys who can’t shoot but defend so he was just kinda there…

But what the others don’t have that Sochan did was a major regression in confidence this season saw his offence get even worse. Passing up open threes, not hustling hard enough for loose balls on defence or offence and consistent cryptic social media posts which in retrospect indicate unhappiness with falling out of the rotation with no real effort on the floor when he did see them. Ended up becoming a garbage time guy. It became clear for a while he didn’t want to be here and his effort on the floor showed it.

Unfortunately a lot of Spurs fans really love him for the reason that they got attached to their pre-Wemby drafted players and somehow still envisioned a future where he was going to reach some potential they had in mind for him. But he showed no growth towards it this year.

He can most likely improve somewhere else, but there was no outcome other than a trade or him leaving in FA.
