I disagree. Yes, he was criticized for his lack of efficiency, but I feel like efficiency is more scrutinized in today’s game than it was in Kobe’s era.

Also, Kobe is definitely not getting more praise since he has passed. He was always considered the top player of his generation along with Duncan. Most popular and influential, too.

I’m a Celtics fan and I remember perfectly in 2006-2010 that Kobe was seen as the undisputed best player in the league - even though LeBron was getting up there - and there were absolutely discussions that he is “near GOAT” status. Back then though, no one questioned Jordan was the GOAT

Were there anyone who pushed back? Sure. Especially people would say Shaq was more valuable than Kobe as a rebuttal, but it was never that Kobe was inefficient. The 2000s were inefficient basketball all around.

I finagled the query to make it as positive to Kobe as possible (only champions, WAR rather than rating to account for his incredible longevity, make the playoff weight be 2) and even then he still comes out as 9th, and this is 1977 onwards, meaning that it excludes half of Kareem’s career, Wilt, Jerry West etc.

Nah efficency really wasnt a thing back then. If that was the case guys like Duncan and Iverson would’ve been criticized as well but they weren’t because people understood the context. People criticized kobe due to his wild shot selection but it was necessary given the talent around him in his prime. He was above league average efficency wise despite having the highest shot volume

I know I’ve said this before:

Kobe had the most varied and difficult shot diet of maybe anyone (for a high volume, at least). That’s mainly what hurts him in his efficiency. He takes almost exclusively tough shots and he doesn’t really have a spot where he was 50+% in the mid-range while guarded.

Jordan had a similar diet of shots (Post turnarounds, fadeaways, pullups… And so on), but MJ was better about getting to his spots or to the basket.

Kobe would just shoot it from anywhere and everywhere, mostly because he couldn’t bypass the defense to the extent that Jordan could to get a better shot.

However, for his era he was above average efficiency on probably the most inefficient shot diet. So, defenses still reacted and were warped all the same - because even if he was shooting poorly up to that point they had to treat him like he might make the next 5-6 shots regardless of the defense’s coverage.

Shameless meat riding is his biggest flaw in his game in my humble, definitely unbiased opinion
