The timing thing is huge! There’s been a bunch of centre backs in soccer for example who’s only been like 5’9 (Fabio Cannovaro, an all time great f.e) which is considered very short for the position since you’re battling 6’3 monster forwards but there were very few people who won headers against him. His positioning was obviously elite but his timing was SURGICAL, he caught the ball so far up in the air before any of his taller opponents could react because he timed his jumps so damn well. It looked like he was floating at times.

Luka likes to slow down towards the paint area to read the defense and Ayton does the same because he likes to take floaters which just results to clogging the paint.

thats not really accurate. At his best Ayton is head and shoulders better than Hayes. Its just that right now we’re seeing “low motor” Ayton. His biggest weakness is his mindset, and its super weird to witness up close. But in terms of who is “better” its Ayton.
His ceiling is higher, their floors are about the same, Jax just brings it more consistently, at least at this point in the season. It’s situational and always in flux but right now I’m giving the nod to Jax

Respectfully, the last 5 games, huge comebacks and leads have been made when Ayton goes out. Today, the entire lead evaporated in the 3rd quarter. Ayton missed a defensive assignment and Luka looked right to the bench and asked for 11 (Jaxson Hayes number). Hayes comes in and the lead grew right back. Independent of Ayton, Hayes is an improved player this year.
With the Ayton, The energy and lack of physicality in his game prevent him from doing the most important things this Lakers team needs him to. If you want to say he’s “better” okay. But he absolutely is not better for this Lakers team. Jaxson Hayes is a better fit and therefor a more consistently impactful player.
People saying Hayes was crazy for that one, but nah man. Past few games between these two teams, the Bulls play the Lakers like their lives depend on it and try to embarrass Luka or Reaves.
