you’re right. that’s what this implies. but in practice, that’s the “unspoken code”. as long as that line isn’t crossed. the owners won’t care. and the fans probably won’t care.

the only way fans would have cared is if the clippers actually win something. it’s basically as bad as the astros cheating. cap circumvention is an extreme advantage. it’s just the clippers are cheating super hard and still sucking. just like if the astros never even made the playoffs, people probably wouldn’t have cared.

the problem there isn’t the richest owners. it’s the cheapest owners who don’t give a fuck. despite all the advantages of money, the dodgers still almost lost in the finals. the money absolutely helps, but it was clear that the players absolutely put in an absolutely extraordinary effort into securing the second championship the next year. (yoshinobu was doing insane shit).

ultimately, the problem depends on fan expectations and if fans are happy. NBA is already more sports entertainment than an actual competitive league. this just pushes it more into being pro wrestling. with rules that are there but not really. but pro wrestling does fine

He signed up with the expectation that there were no guarantees except that he would have to play whatever role Ty Lue asked him to play. CP reportedly just wanted to be close to his family and he said he was willing to take whatever role was asked of him. Those were the terms when the Clippers signed him to a minimum contract.

They didn’t expect him to appoint himself a team leader and go around henpecking his teammates and undercutting his coaches. He was even asked to stop, but he didn’t. You could say the Clippers were stupid for believing him in the first place. But that doesn’t clear CP of responsibility for overstepping his role.

There’s a line between holding people accountable and being a dick. He was reportedly asked to stop. He reportedly even apologized to the team and said he’d tone it down. But he didn’t. That’s not being a leader, that’s being an asshole.

This run really doesn’t feel like a star carry.

The Clippers look more like a true team breakthrough with some impressive coaching behind it. Everyone’s minutes are pretty balanced — I glanced at StatMuse and didn’t see anyone averaging more than ~31 MPG.

Compare that to the Lakers leaning heavily on Luka at ~39 MPG, and the difference in approach is pretty obvious.

That balance is what makes this turnaround so impressive to me.

Are you talking just during this winning streak? Harden is averaging over 35 mpg for the season from what I’m seeing and could definitely use more rest before the playoffs. He looks very drained at times because they are very reliant on him orchestrating. Kawhi’s at 33 but not as many games played obviously.

Edit: Also seeing that Hardens over 36 mpg the last 18 games so a little bit higher than his overall season average.

The Clippers also have the longest active winning season streak in the NBA and haven’t had a sub .500 season since 2010-2011. This turnaround means that win streak may remain intact afterall.

EDIT: And I know people will say that it doesn’t matter because they haven’t won a chip doesn’t realize that the Clippers were literally a bottom feeder scum of the earth organization until 15 years ago. The fact that the culture, the energy, and the narrative around the Clippers has shifted in the last 15 years to the point where the Clippers are actually ranked as competitors consistently is a massive positive for a team that was so so terrible for so so long.

And even then, you have to pray that Kawhi stays healthy. We’ve seen this numerous times where whenever things start looking good, injuries come and suddenly Kawhi barely plays come postseason.

People tend to forget that they have (mostly) the same roster as last season. They went 50-32 last year after getting completely written off as well.

Beal getting hurt and CP3 getting exiled was not on anybody’s radar, but Kawhi has been playing MVP-level ball and James Harden is making a case for All-NBA yet again.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they manage to get themselves into a 6th seed, but play-in is what will probably happen. Either way, nobody wants to see them in a 7-game series

Idk why so many people glaze cp3. His style of play and demeanor always put a hard ceiling on his teams. Does no one think his constant antics on the court were frustrating for his team to endure? He’s the king of flops, he bitches every single play to the refs, needs the ball in his hand 23.5 seconds a possession. That’s wack af to play with.

Harden’s never missed the playoffs and he’s not starting now. He’s a generational floor raiser, especially in the regular season. Between him and an old Leonard, they can drag just about any roster to the post season if they can stay healthy enough.
