[Highlight] Steve Kerr called the arena atmosphere in Minneapolis today one of the most “bizarre, sad” vibes he’s experienced at a game
Warriors blew out the Timberwolves.
“Honestly what I felt was that their group was suffering.”
I really appreciate Steve Kerr and how often he speaks up.
It’ll be sad when he retires. We take for granted those who speak out in sports until they are gone.
Or if their name is Colin Kaepernick.
God forbid a black man takes a knee during the national anthem.
He also got scapegoated for a dumpster fire the owners caused.
That’s awful!
Meanwhile the NFL is openly celebrating the 250th anniversary of this country’s independence. If that’s not political, I don’t know what is. Fucking hypocrisy run amok.
Can’t wait for them to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the “freedom” we granted the slaves in 2115. Such a heartwarming moment it will be
Not only that he worked with legit US veterans on what sort of protest would be respectful but noticeable and agreed on kneeling. Most of the people I saw calling him out were the “oh I would’ve served if so and so, blah, blah, bullshit” types not actual veterans.
Coach pop is a prime example.
Same, but honestly I could see him taking a tv job, so we’ll still probably hear from him in times like these.
Maybe then we could vote for him…?
LeChina
Are you sure it’ll be sad? It seems like 90% of people in these subs will be xelebrating
Really though. This place seems to hate Steve Kerr most of the time
It’s nice to see people compliment him here. Usually it’s just jokes about broke the code or I haven’t seen the video yet because he doesn’t throw his guys under the bus.
Like pop wasn’t and every other coach isnt the same way.
Steve stands on business for social issues
When things actually matter he always speaks up. People ignore that Kerr got punched by MJ, and odds are players fight a lot more often than it gets leaked to the press. It just gets handled in house which clearly didnt happen with the vid getting leaked which made it harder for them to work it out as a team.
Steve Kerr’s father was executed while serving as the President of the American University of Beruit in Lebanon. Steve was 19 years old. There’s a reason he is so outspoken about injustices he sees in the world. He knows first hand what extremism looks like.
Yeah I made another comment on it. There’s people in here straight up ignoring or ignorant to the dudes life story.
Never knew this, thanks for sharing
And then he was heckled for it while playing a game against ASU. He knows first hand how shitty people can be as well.
Damn thats pretty insane
His dad was also the president at the American University in Beirut and was assassinated during the Lebanese civil war. Steve understands firsthand to bear the brunt of political violence
The Steve Kerr hate in this place (not today but other days) feels so forced. Honestly the Draymond hate feels forced too at times. But at least Draymond is actually a jerk
Draymond hate will never be forced. (But im bias and love Stephen adams and his testicles)
Ill give this as an example. The other day Draymond said he isnt a dirty player. Obviously silly but I get why Draymomd would have that ridiculous opinion of himself.
One of the responses was Draymond should go to therapy. He’s stated multiple times he’s in therapy.
Like even when the hate is justified, its just always way over the top. Its just hoops. People act like he’s a facist or something lol
He was a fascist towards Adams testicles. Hence, no redemption
My absolute favorite is when smooth brains say he’s fake good guy because he named his son Nick, proof he’s a secret jackass.
I’ve never thought it makes him a jackass, but even as a huge fan of Steve, I agree it’s one of the strangest name choices I’ve ever heard from a parent.
Fuck I just learned this, and then it took ~:08 for me to even realize what the problem was
Kerr seems like a genuinely good guy, except when it comes to Draymond
I’m sure he’s disgusted by drays behavior like all of us. He just didn’t want it to possibly cost Steph and others a shot at their legacies by blowing up the locker room. Dray was an important part to those chips .
Kinda the coaches job
Everyone on Reddit acts like they know all the answers to resolve any issues that arises on a team, how to handle it and how we know everything that goes behind doors or what didn’t. Everyone is a coach on Reddit but we really don’t know a lot. Steve Kerr and Pop are coaches who always speak up for injustice and they’re very diplomatic. They’re great communicators. I trust they’re the same when coaching and managing relations on the team. However, these are all grown men and sometimes you can’t get through to them. And it’s not for lack of effort.
I mean, I think it cost them that by undermining their sense of team anyway, since it was clear Draymond would never be held responsible for his actions.
Yeah but he kind of doesn’t have a choice, does he? If the FO commits to Draymond then Kerr as the coach has to make it work. I guess he could quit but then the next coach would do the same. Like the other guy said, thats the whole job. Draymond’s antics have been plenty destructive to the team and obviously I wish he had more self-control, but he’s made us a better team on net over the last 10 years. And frankly, Dray’s pretty much just a dick on the court, it’s not like he’s a predator or domestic abuser or anything heinous like that.
I don’t know, I just think Draymond’s an asshole who’s never been punished for his shit in a way that matters and your whole organization enables him. Not too different from Jordan, honestly, he brings you wins but he’s just the most unlikable son of a bitch you’ve ever met. And yeah, maybe he’s not an absolute monster, but he is a shitty person.
Yeah but that’s just professional sports, and if you’re talented enough as an athlete then you kind of get to make the rules to a large degree. Let’s say the Warriors dumped him in 2019 over character issues. He makes another team better and I’d just get to root for a shittier team. I don’t like Dray as a person, I think he’s a classic playground bully and I would hate to have a coworker like that, but he’s a great player and he’s essential to the dynasty. Sucks he’s a shitty person but there’s plenty of douchebags in sports, it’s nothing new.
locker room was already blown up. he did a terrible job repairing it or even trying to hold anyone accountable
that caused a rift between the vets and younger players
Pure speculation by you.
Incredibly serious, nuanced conversation about a literal murder
/r/nba BUT DRAYMOND THOUGH
you’ll never change, will you
In all seriousness, I’m not trying to take away from the horrible stuff happening. I just think it’s funny Kerr can (like most of us) be so clear cut about the truly horrible stuff but has such a blind spot for the person he’s close to who’s kind of an unlikable ass.
I’m not trying to take away from the horrible stuff happening
literally what you’re doing, you have an obsession and it’s not healthy. Give it a rest and move on
on certain topics. Kerr was pretty weak with his response on the China-Hong Kong human rights situation
said he’ll “do his research on it”
Yeah because that would actually affect his and the league’s bottom line. Nothing any of these guys has said over the years has been so unpopular that it might cause them to lose money or endorsements. Unless you’re Kyrie promoting anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.
Kerr and Pop aren’t afraid to stir the pot. I’ve always appreciated that.
There was a list that came out on reddit. I didnt save it. But it was a list of greatest leaders in sports currently. Voted ok by athletes. Steve Kerr topped that list.
He really doesn’t miss an opportunity. He’s taking up the mantle that Pop left behind and I respect the hell of him for that.
I miss Popovich too. Both amazing coaches but even more amazing people.
Yeah, Google his dad. There is a reason
*except if his teammate gets physically assaulted
He speaks up for PR purposes but he won’t stand up for what’s right could of easily told his team not to play but he didn’t
easily
Lol wut
The game shouldn’t have been played. The city isn’t in any sort of place to be focused on a sporting event.
Well dont worry, the warriors play the wolves in Minneapolis again tomorrow!
I thought you were joking…
We get free Jaden McDaniels hats. Yippee
Elated
Lmao I was looking at the schedule and was like wowwwwwwww no way. I actually thought it was an error at first, or I hadn’t clicked the right day.
LMAO
No games should be played right now, if we’re honest. Not saying that’s realistic, but I wonder at what point we get some prominent athletes sitting out. Wemby is a good candidate, he’s wide awake about this shit.
I wonder at what point we get some prominent athletes sitting out.
probably never
Is he? Because he’s said absolutely nothing
Yeah why the fuck we giving Wemby credit. He ain’t say shit… like that vast majority of NBA players haven’t.
Big props to Hali though much respect.
I’m aware that Wemby hasn’t said anything, but if you know anything about the guy you know that he’s in the same boat. An Ali would be incredibly beneficial at this juncture, and Wemby is an international superstar. I give Tyrese a ton of credit but what he said is just the start. We need a lot more than that. We need players who are willing to sit out finals games if it comes to it.
Wemby is…French? If he said anything, I guarantee you half the sub would be like “worry about your own country you French fuck.”
It should be Ant saying shit. Or Bron, or Steph, or Tatum, or KD, or any of the American stars in the league.
Lol at Ant. That dude doesn’t give a shit about his own kids, much less the problems going on in Minnesota
can’t believe I’m saying this: we need Kyrie healthy
Yeah, he’s absolutely another one lol. Russ too. There are a few, and I do think someone is gonna step up. I hope so, anyway. Inspirational figures are not and cannot be the heart of the movement, but they are important.
Kyrie and the Bucks tried to do that during the bubble after George Floyd but Lebron cared more about basketball. Obama also came in and advised them to keep playing
Really sad man
Nailed it
im not from america im curious whats happening
Ant should’ve boycotted
I want to hear from people that live in Minneapolis. Does it feel as bad as we’re all watching online? I mean some of these posts basically look like a warzone at times. It’s just like… How TF is this Minnesota of all places? Looks like some civil war stuff is happening right in front of us. Curious if you guys actually see this with your own eyes every day? Freaks me out seeing how bad some of these videos are
both teams should have mutually agreed to not play, any statement is weak in comparison
Meh, I’d argue that entertainment value is super important at a time like that for people to relax for a couple hours
Yeah but it’s not just for protest’s sake. If some major sport event is cancelled, there’ll be lots of ramifications. I mean, who do DraftKings™ pay out? Hurting people’s bottom line has always been the best motivation for action.
I mean based on what Kerr is saying here, no one in that city or on the court is anywhere near “relaxed” or “enjoying” this.
Bread and circuses
Was at a family party in MN today and it was just quiet. Everyone here is mad/sad/confused. It feels like an invasion and nobody is doing anything. Prepare your communities and think about what you will do when they do this in your town. I know I wasn’t emotionally prepared and I think a lot of us are still in shock. Get ready.
It absolutely is an invasion of rights and human decency.
Plus the very cold weather makes the mood even worse
People ARE doing things. There is only so much that can be done within our political system. The majority of Americans voted for this. We need to defeat them at the midterms and the work for that starts now.
The majority of voters and I have serious doubts that he would have won if people knew this insanity would commence ie actually read p2025 and took him at his word about punishing disloyal and wanting to be a dictator.
Probably, but the risks seemed pretty obvious.
I knew all this insanity would commence. I still can’t believe that people thought tr. was some sort of benevolent “business man” that was going to help the middle/working classes. It just blows my mind.
He won the election, but idt the majority of people wanted Trump. Last election felt more like the Dems fumbling with Biden stepping down last-minute, forcing Kamala to run a shoddy campaign, rather than Trump winning.
In the end almost 80 million people still voted for Trump. All of us know exactly who he is. It shouldn’t have mattered what kind of campaign the Dems ran. No one should need convincing that Trump is a geriatric maniac.
More people DID NOT vote (about 90 million) than those who voted for Trump (77 million or Harris (75 million).
It was also very dumb to pick Kamala with the Hillary Clinton playbook. She absolutely bombed in the primaries (a great signal for what the more average voter thought of her) before her sudden promotion to VP. In California she also was not particularly popular especially when more details about her as Attorney General came out.
America is absolutely not ready for a woman president. Trump was destined to win this election from the start.
So you are saying Kamala Harris was absolutely the best possible option that the democrats could field?
I didn’t love Kamala either and the entire Democratic party botched the fuck out of 2024 but anybody with half a brain would’ve voted for a blind pigeon over Donald Trump. In this vein I think Bo Burnham said it best.
“Within the political system” there’s your issue
Perhaps doom posting in a basketball sub in the early hours of the morning isn’t the best strategy
I genuinely think people need to stop saying that ‘a majority of Americans voted for Trump’ because it’s not true no matter how you slice it. Frankly I think he and Elon used rigged voting machines - there was even plenty of articles / evidence about it, but even if you want to dismiss that as a conspiracy theory (which I’d understand) his actual voting numbers were not a majority of Americans. We have a huge populace that doesn’t vote at all, and a minority of Trump voters. They are NOT the majority, and simply acting like they are is basically handing them over something they don’t deserve and shouldn’t be freely handed.
The opinion polls matched voting outcomes pretty accurately. Even if the machines were rigged, it doesn’t significantly change his degree of support.
When people say a majority elected him, we always mean a majority of voters. Which is true. Not in 2016, but it was true in 2024. Sure, it’s only a plurality of the general population, but that’s splitting hairs.
Trump won by a plurality of votes in 2024 as well.
Defeating the “other side” is exactly how the elites want to control you
Biden or Harris wouldn’t be doing this. But if you believe they’re all the same, what’s your plan then?
It is an invasion
What can anybody do besides vote better and hope the elections are fair. When your leadership is combative and has actual contempt for more than half the population, even peaceful protest isn’t a warning it’s a challenge. More people die and the base celebrates.
We’ve dealt with sociopathic leaders as enemies before but perhaps never has the call been coming from inside the house.
You act like they went up to a random guy and blew his brains out. “Get ready” lmao
Yeah man, we have actual Nazis going around beating, robbing and murdering people while the president applauds and encourages it. I guess you could say it’s bizarre and sad around here at the moment.
The president applauds it because he himself is a Nazi
I feel like this should be pointed out every chance we get. The only long form things we can be sure he’s definitely read are the book of Hitler’s speeches he’s kept by his bedside, and Mein Kampf. He’s regularly praised Hitler. His ballroom project is a rip off of Hitler’s New Reich Chancellery. He recently said he wanted to build an Arch of Triumph (which sounds oddly like Hitler’s Triumphal Arch). People act like that Nazi Stephen Miller is controlling things but Trump is all about that Nazi shit.
the country is with you
yesterday I heard that Minnesota is District 13 from Hunger Games
It was bizarre. It was sad. We are suffering and it has nothing to do with the 5 game losing streak.
I’ve felt it hanging over me like a dark cloud since yesterday. Sadness, anxiety, uncertainty, fear, but predominantly sadness.
Everyone in Minneapolis is being affected by this. We’re seeing things with our own eyes. We’re hearing things from our own neighbors. We’re taking concrete actions to defend ourselves.
And then everyone who’s supposed to be our leaders is telling us we’re crazy and our eyes and ears deceive us. Our government. Our news media. Our employers.
We as a city have never been so together yet simultaneously have never been so alone.
It is the little things, workplaces are organizing rides for Latin American employees because they are afraid to drive alone. Seeing out of state plates on SUVs and feeling panic, and getting out of their way physically because they drive like fucking maniacs. All the way down to a common goodbye between people becoming “stay safe”
And it goes beyond just Minneapolis, cities like Rochester and Mankato have been hit with the crackdown too.
Ya that’s what I mean about never being more together. The community is watching out for each other to an absurd degree right now.
We are all feeling it and with you brother.
Warriors fan here. We see you Minnesota. We see your community’s courage and humanity. We move in solidarity with you. Sending much love from the Bay
Much love from a Dubs fan in LA. That was a tough one to watch. Don’t feel good about winning, don’t even feel good about watching basketball. I’m just furious. Solidarity from the West Coast.
I cant focus on anything.
I’m out in Oregon and y’all have been on my mind 💚💙
There’s been a lot of ICE activity really close to me including them kidnapping the family trying to take their daughter to urgent care. I just feel like it’s inevitable they’ll get closer and closer to me and they’ll eventually ramp up activity here after they make an example of Minneapolis. Stay safe out there yall.
I feel so bad for the people out there. It’s gonna hit me even harder soon as I had a trip planned out there for early Feb and I don’t plan on cancelling it. Already have a lot of anxiety over it and I don’t even live there. :(
Wishing you guys strength from abroad. Whether that be strength to fight back or just the strength to persevere.
Trump is literally destroying the fabric of American and international society as we know it in real time right now.
Trump is the symptom, conservatives are the disease. They only elected him because he started saying racist shit about Obama that they already agreed with.
You could go all the way back to the beginning of the Southern Strategy, but sticking to the last quarter century… We had the Brooks Brothers Riot and the stacking of the Supreme Court with Unified Executive Theory groupies, oh and Dubya tried to appoint Hans von Spakovsky to the FEC. Project 2025 didn’t just appear out of thin air - it’s been percolating for a long time and it’s not going to just disappear with Trump.
My fear is that Trump being so unhinged that if he was removed it would HELP the ones really pulling the strings. It is like letting a 7 year old help in the kitchen, then letting them take credit for cooking dinner, you already know that if they didn’t need to gentle nudge Trump into action they would be so much more efficient with their evil. If they didn’t need to spend so much time with him whining about the Nobel prize so he wants Greenland, they could focus that effort on actually getting their agenda done, and that is terrifying.
I never get these arguments… the USA was always nativist and nationalist. The average American was far more culturally conservative 25⁄50 years ago than today. The majority of Americans supported the national guard during the Kent state shooting and MLK had approval ratings in the low 30s when he was assassinated.
There was always racist shit, but the cultural norms have become so polarized
This a simple example, but think about how many Black family sitcoms existed in the 90s. Even for kids, you had Kenan & Kel, Sister Sister, Raven, it was just like not a big deal. And media consumption was pretty monocultural back then so everyone was watching.
Now there isn’t a single one as far as I know and the minute you put non white people in media it’s “DEI” “Woke” “Pandering” blah blah
“The average American was far more culturally conservative 25⁄50 years ago than today.”
As someone who was around 50 years ago… no not really. Things were gradually moving in a better direction on many issues, and people were starting to open their eyes on issues like racism and sexism. Now all of that is going backwards, fast. Thanks to conservative media and social media algorithms, a huge percentage of white people in this country have become convinced that they are the only true victims of racism, that crime is skyrocketing, that immigrants get free stuff from the government, that American Christians are persecuted, that storming the Capitol to overturn an election is perfectly normal behavior, that vaccines are evil, that global climate change is not real, etc. People are angry and stupid and it is impossible to reach their closed minds.
It’s scary as hell right now.
The southern strategy didn’t work for Nixon in 68 though. He lost more than half the South.
George Wallace ran in ‘68, look him up.
Yeah. Nixons southern strategy still didn’t work. The point was to take Wallace votes away.
There’s something funny about people trying to criticize Kerr when hes consistently shown to care about political issues and says the right things, and his dad was straight up assassinated by terrorists. Not picking and choosing the right words in the moment doesn’t change who he is as a person.
Wow, TIL about Kerr’s father. Shocking history there.
But he doesn’t. He’s had over two years to talk about the ongoing genocide in Gaza and he’s proceeded to say nothing at all.
Steve Kerr and Doc Rivers, both can be polarizing as coaches, but are good persons with grounded views and opinions based on their real life experiences.
Doc rivers has objectively been a terrible coach outside of the Celtics and the defensive credit for that team goes to Thibs.
I haven’t seen much in terms of him making social or life related statements so idk but it sounds believable.
Steve Kerr is probably a good coach but people underestimate how much roster matters.
Probably? 😭😭😭
I think he is for sure but people will argue his roster was stacked blah blah blew 3-1 lead etc. it’s at least a valid (though difficult) argument to say he is an average coach. Saying doc is a good let alone great coach is pure delusion or dishonesty. At least at the nba level.
you gotta consider his rosters when you look at his rings as a coach. I’m sure he’s not a terrible coach, but you can’t say he’s good automatically bc his team has won some championships. lots of coaches could do that with the rosters Kerr worked with
Doc’s father was a police officer in Chicago. Doc told some good stories about his dad on Steve Kerr and Pete Carroll’s Podcast ‘Flying Coach’ several years ago. Here is a link to that episode
Also, the way he handled the Clippers mess during the Donald Sterling saga was remarkable, considering the situation.
I am not a fan either of Doc Rivers as a coach, but I am of Doc Rivers as a person.
Popovich was the same way. Miss him being the Spurs coach.
He’s always been this way. Never shying away from social injustices. Mad respect to him.
Except china
Great coach. Great human. Fuck ICE.
Very insightful … as usual
When Steve Kerr says a vibe is ‘sad’ and ‘bizarre,’ it holds weight. He’s seen the darkest sides of what political and social violence can do. Massive respect to him for looking past the scoreboard and acknowledging that the human beings on the other side were hurting. Some things are just bigger than basketball.
Felt that watching the game. The Wolves heads weren’t in it. Extremely sloppy. The crowd was quiet except when Ingles came in and hit a 3 and when Post was a free throw away from winning them free food. Totally understandable to not have your head in the game when your city is under siege by the federal government and your citizens are being executed in the street by secret gestapo without repercussions.
I was there, he’s right. Was hoping for a distraction but the team didn’t show up so it was just another L for the weekend.
Evidently not Ant.
Insane this is where the country is at
I don’t think I fully appreciate the Warriors since I’m a Kings fan
Kerr is the best when it comes to speaking on moments like these
Kerr is the man for always speaking up about issues like this, seems like a good empathetic dude.
This is the absolute inverse of Anthony Edwards “yeah I’m sorry you guys are doing bad so I guess I’ll support you or whatever” horseshit
Yeah it’s almost like games should have been postponed indefinitely
This is dope, the nfl would’ve never canceled a game.
It felt so off watching the game like it doesn’t feel right to be focusing on basketball
I’m proud that the NBA is always on the right side of these issues.
Meanwhile the NFL was silencing ICE chants on the broadcast
Pffffffff 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 good god just talk about basketball and then go home
Except for Ant
you mean your city is under siege by the US govt and that make people upset?
weird
This game shouldn’t count
Kerr should worry about draymond hurting other players
I can’t imagine the anger of that community. They were thriving better than any city, and ICE terrorizes them. They better get justice!
Why does he not consider himself part of that group?
Ant definitely isn’t struggling. Maybe the rest of the team, but not Ant.
Bravo to Kerr for speaking out and being passionate in his statements
Unfortunately the players just care about continuously collecting their Paycheck. Ant (the best and most popular athlete in MN) just said “meh I don’t have social media but I’m w the people”. better than nothing but he has the platform so say so much more. Disappointing he didn’t have anything real to say like actually standing up for the people in his city
Dont think players would really care as much as we think they do
Could have not played, Steve. You’re so fucking half assed. Why do you talk about politics.
But they’ll still play the next game?? They should sit out honestly, their city is suffering
Trade Kuminga
Probably from watching that sorry GSW team
Call me cynical, but I doubt that most of them actually care.
You’re cynical.
To be clear, I’m not talking about the players outside of KAT. Wouldn’t surprise if a bunch of the players like Trump.
I guess Rudy does. Might be causing some rifts in the locker room. Pure speculation on my behalf though!
Terrible.
