Yeah Duren’s been growing into his role. I fully expect you guys to give him a rookie max, probably with an All-NBA kicker too. Not sure what he was asking for in the off-season, but it may have been cheaper to have extended him then instead of letting him break out and drive up his asking price.

As a rule of thumb you can have 2 max contracts on a roster and be fine. It’s 3 that’ll bite you. You paid Cade already so you got 4 young guys fighting for that rookie max. Duren’s playing a highly-coveted position since good centers don’t grow on trees. Ausar and Holland need to light it up from 3 to really juice up their argument. And I think everyone knows that Ivey isn’t that guy anymore so he’s not really in contention.

Alternatively, you can package some of those guys and picks for a sure-fire All-Star on a max contract like Lauri. But that’s a bigger hypothetical than guessing who’s getting paid and who isn’t.

Sabonis is on a minutes restriction and had been coming off the bench the last few games. If you really think having Russ or Demar out there for another 10 minutes would have turned this around against the best team in the East, I don’t really know what to tell you.

Is it possible Doug subbed the rest of the rotation in a few minutes earlier than expected to send a message, sure. But he’s trying to win games and keep his job, even if the front office is trying to sell off assets. They aren’t tanking nearly as much as they should, as someone who watches them.
