Any news broadcast using adjectives to describe events (“a horrible tragedy”, e.g.) is telling you how to feel about the events. Trust journalists who don’t tell you how to feel, who just tell you what happened; use your own critical thinking skills to decide what you think of it all.
Even that’s not perfect, word choice carries context and it’s impossible to be perfectly neutral in the context of world events. Describing a plane crash as anything other than a tragedy would be weird and dehumanizing. So when political violence is involved it’s all but impossible to not choose a side when one side wants that political violence to be normalized.

Unfortunately they were right and it worked better than even their wildest dreams. There’s 77 million Americans that they do the thinking for. It’s crazy because whenever I talk to Republicans on any issue the all have the exact same Fox “News” talking points. You can literally predict almost word for word their response to any social/political topic.
It worked in no small part because millions of Americans hate liberal ideologies so much that they would gladly see the government mow down protestors with machine guns – as long as they were Democrats.

Midway through, she discusses how Zuckerberg started talking about how he wants Meta to be the publisher of news stories and how news outlets should be housed on Meta. Agreed, they are the worst major network by a wide margin…but it is not just them. Most people get their news from social media sites that are built to serve you things that feed into your existing thoughts, without any filtering about truth or not. And there’s other networks like NewsMAX that are just as bad if not worse than Fox.
Also, CNN is awful too, they just partnered with fucking Kalshi, who per their CEO is designed to “financialize everything and create a tradable asset off of any difference in opinion”. CNN heard the CEO say that and thought, “this is a good idea to partner with them”. Kalshi (and associated sites) publish betting odds, based primarily on the opinions of far-right edge lords and cryptobros given that’s who uses those sites, on events such as “will the US bomb Venezuela” as news, which can in turn actually influence public opinion and maybe even the event themselves. And there are no regulations on it.
The networks and social media sites are all here to divide us, because that’s what gets them clicks and attention. Some are just worse than others

I used to work for a large media company (won’t say which) and it’s even considered a left leaning one but we were told to make our headlines clickbait-like because management cared more about page views, audience retention, and search engine optimization over authenticity and accuracy. Not what I went to journalism school for.
This is EXACTLY the point. It’s not about sides, it’s about incentive and impact. The effect on a societal level is elevating anxiety, fomenting fear, and intensifying conflict.
it is also causing a lot of people to check out in general. i’ll be the first to admit i don’t follow news much and could probably stand to be more aware. but it is also frustrating and overwhelming to live in a media culture where finding trustworthy information is not an easy task. i’m sure i could figure out how to find more reliable sources or cross check stories against each other, and probably i should be more willing to take that time, but man my life is busy as hell. the barrier of entry for finding legitimate sources and reasonably unbiased takes makes it hard to feel like an informed, participating citizen without building your life around that goal, and that’s a big ask depending on your lifestyle and responsibilities.

I’d say it’s almost the biggest problem. The Internet was supposed to make information free and accessible. Everybody could draw their own conclusions and then discuss them on fora.
Instead, if you disagree with the general consensus of a subreddit, you’ll be cursed at, insulted, and banned. For example, I had a good discussion about ICE with a family member today. It wasn’t just “they’re 100% good/bad” stuff. But on Reddit? Good luck if you want to talk about a way forward. It’s all just “you’re a fascist/communist!”
Many Redditors definitely go overboard, but there are ways of making counter-narrative points that won’t get immediately buried in downvotes.

I think this answer does such a good job of being patriotic but also saying there’s work to be done. A lot of people think criticizing what’s going on = hating America, but that’s far from the truth.
I agree with this, the problem is he is constantly doing exactly what he’s preaching against here… he regularly goes with what mainstream media says and shows bias consistently. The media doesn’t care about us.

What a big nothing. I have been a big Steve Kerr fan since his days playing for the Bulls. I loved his announcing career. I forgot about his time as a GM. I love the way he coaches the game. But every time he’s asked a difficult question he gives a long, seemingly thoughtful, grandpa style answer that is either self-serving (Draymond stuff) or completely meaningless like this one (and meaningless is the best possible interpretation. He could be stirring the pot further by getting both sides to start claiming that they’re the ones that still hold to those traditional “constitutional” values. I don’t think he’s doing that on purpose, but i was asking myself). Murder is murder. Say it.
I feel like Channel 5 with Andrew Callahan does a way better job of reporting than main stream news.
This game was effectively censored. It was relegated to NBA TV which most people don’t have easy access to, to avoid showing the outrage on national TV. Currently watching on NBA TV and they cut away REAL quick from Target Center after the first “fuck ICE” after the moment of silence.

Due respect Steve, it’s not confusing. It’s scary, because fascist Gestapo are in our communities murdering people, but it’s not confusing. We’re watching our government lie to our faces, paint victims of brutality, our brothers and sisters, mothers and sons, as “terrorists”, while demanding voter rolls to rig an election. That’s not confusing, it’s horrifying. You don’t have to watch the news to understand what is happening, you don’t have to listen to the golden megaphones shouting nonsense at you. You watch the phone videos, and they aren’t confusing at all.
We’re under assault by a fascist regime. It sucks that we’re going to have to repel people that wear our government’s flag to cover their evil, but it isn’t confusing. The only question mark is when are people going to leave the comfort of their homes to go out there and join the people in the streets to demand that every person in the decision chain leading to these abuses be put in chains and a concrete box, never to be seen or heard under free skies again.
We need government regulation of the media. Just not by this administration.

This country has been racist as fuck since its inception. The “values” really only came to be post civil rights. And that hasn’t been a very long time.
