And the Grizzlies players generally live out in the middle of nowhere. There’s minimal infrastructure for salting and plowing the roads, but there’s none when you get out where the players live.

But another factor here is that public transportation isn’t easily available. If the buses aren’t running, a lot of the arena staff won’t be able to get to work.

I moved away but back when I was there and had season tickets I could walk to the Forum. One game was a snow game but they held it anyway - a lot of the concessions and things like that were closed. They weren’t checking tickets for entrance to the sections and things like that.

There’s a lot more than just basketball players showing up that goes into putting a game on and I think we take that for granted sometimes. A lot of people put a lot of work in just to make this all happen.

Snow in Denver also behaves immensely different. It’s so dry and so sunny that snow mostly sublimates rather than melts. Because there isn’t as much liquid water, we don’t have to do nearly as much pretreatment to roads to avoid icing as the Midwest and the Appalachians

Nope. The Gulf Stream keeps European winters pretty mild and wet. The US generally gets colder winters and heavier snowfall.

Luckily we avoided the really bad of either, but it’s kinda like 5 inch frozen sheet of sleet I guess? The roads are frozen/super packed sleet but the trees/power lines don’t have ice weighing it down causing hell. It’s still a fucking nightmare to drive though so they had no business playing that game today

We got about ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ snow then sleet. then snow again today. It’s not real icy, but it’s less than ideal to drive on. And no one around here has snow tires and most of us have 2wd.

No region is equipped to handle ice. It’s way worse than snow. You basically have to wait for it to thaw on its own because nothing can be done.

Canada is too far north to really get ice storms. Practically all of their winter precipitation is snow.

Thankfully, it’s generally cold enough up in Indianapolis that our winter precipitation is snow rather than ice. But I can think of a couple exceptions:

1. There was a crazy ice storm back in 2011. Thankfully I still had power, but the city was shut down for a week. Got to miss a week of school, which I thought was pretty cool.
2. When I was about 17-18, there was once an un-forecasted ice storm while I was working 2nd shift at my 1st job. I got off work at around midnight, hopped on the interstate, and found that there was a pileup at my exit. I managed to get my car to a stop, and was the first car at that exit that wasn’t involved in the pileup. But I was stuck, both because the pileup physically blocked my path and because the road was so icy that I had to keep the parking brake on to prevent my car from slipping into the ditch.
   1. While I was stuck, I got out of the car one time to help some lady jump her car. Slipped and busted my ass at least twice. I had never walked on a more slippy surface in my life. Ice that is right around 32f/0c and that is wet = totally fucked.
   2. There wasn’t shit that first responders could do other than wait for the ice to melt. So I was trapped until about 10:00am, when the sun came out and the ice melted. At that point, I was already late for work. So I turned around and went in to work my shift.
   3. Every single exit on every interstate in the city had an analogous pileup that night. There was no avoiding it. Roads were treated, but it was washed away by the rain rain that preceded freezing rain/ice.

I went to the game last night and they probably should have cancelled it. I took the dart because the roads were bad and it took 4 hours to get home because of all the delays.
