It will always be a bad trade, but Mavs honestly got a few great pieces in retrospect (and with a lot of luck).

AD being hurt almost instantly led to the 1st round pick and they got Flagg, who looks like a future top 10 player, imo.

And a legit 3&D starter, who is 22 years old and might become more than just a starter.

So basically 2 core pieces to a future contender for the next decade. They just had to sacrifice being an instant contender with an all-time great talent lol

The highlight will always be lucking into Flagg. With hindsight that trade worked out in my opinion, despite it being stupid at the time. I believe Flagg is going to be ridiculously good in his prime, maybe even better than Luka because of his two way presence. Someone like Flagg can pair much better with another star than Luka, and I like the archetype of him much more for a championship team. Max is also very solid and will be a good piece around Flagg, and they also got a first that can turn into someone potentially good. They still haven’t traded AD yet, so who knows what they can vet from him, although it most likely won’t be anything crazy.

Man, he was rotting on the bench under Ham and then JJ was utilizing him so well and even had him as a starter. LeBron and Max were killing it on offense and defense.

That Knicks game the night right before the Luka trade genuinely had me excited, LeBron was playing at a top 5 level, Max was looking too be that perfect 3-D wing we needed (he locked up Brunson that game), Reaves was stepping up, and we were winning games against contender with AD out.

I thought we had a chance under JJ that season.

First part of the season he was very hit or miss in terms of his confidence. He would pass up shots that might’ve been slightly contested but are still good shots for someone that shoots as well as him. That Klay influence the other guy is talking about is just letting those shots fly and living with it. Every postgame interview he’s had lately has been the same comment of “I wasn’t comfortable taking those shots before but my teammates and coaches want me to shoot them so I’m learning to be uncomfortable.”

Mavs wouldnt have done it. As idiotic as Nico was/is, Christie was an immediate contributor on offense and defense with the upside of an all-star and who was young.

Knecht was an older rookie known as a shooter who had the yips. Had defensive potential but was at that time (and still is) a bad defender.

Would Nico have taken two picks and Knecht instead of Christie? Maybe, but doubtful because in Nico’s mind he was going to contend for a championship that year and needed a key rotation guy like Max.
