Wasn’t this also talked about as a possibility when JK signed. Wiggins for JK would be a win win for the team without losing draft capital. Now without butler it makes less sense as wiggins really isnt a 2nd option anymore - but he would have been a reliable 3rd option.

The Butler injury was absolutely catastrophic for the Warriors

They weren’t in an amazing spot before, but they team seemed like it was gelling, and they could try to use Kuminga + picks to get another contributor in the window

With Butler out, they simply don’t have the assets to get themselves back into contention. The rest of the team isn’t good enough to pick up the slack and there’s nobody they can get who will make them a competitor

i think trade steph is the obvious best move. work with steph to get him to a destination he likes that has a reasonable shot at competing (spurs make sense to me because they have good assets and he would fit great), make sure the media presents it as a mutual decision so the organization can avoid the stink of “betraying” their legend.

warriors fans will be stung and then they’ll get over it as long as steph seems happy with the outcome. in the long run, they’ll be grateful that the org has put themselves in position for a quick rebuild with extra assets and keeping all of their own picks.

we lose the mystique of steph being a “one-team superstar”, but who really cares? i don’t think that detail changes anyone’s legacy much, especially in a case like steph who was a warrior for the vast majority of his career and had so much success there.

and we all get to watch steph get a chance to go on another good playoff run or two while he’s still a top player. playoff steph is such a legend. i’d like to see that again no matter where it needs to be. warriors fans get an easy second team to root for while their team starts the tank.

This is pretty much my thinking as well, but it seems we are in the minority. The Warriors were looking at an uphill battle for a fifth title even before Butler’s injury. At least bringing back a player who knows the system, is loved by his former coach and teammates, and is also loved by the fans will be a lot of fun to watch. And the Warriors don’t have a fourth title without Wiggins.

If the Warriors threw in a first we possibly would. But I don’t see why they would do that.

This very same thing was said about Wiggins at one point too. I think Miami would want more, but getting the younger player with the more desirable contract option going forward is something.

He scored 21 points in 20 minutes the other night. He shows flashes of offensive brilliance. He is a very strong finisher. 

He has value. 

I could see Miami doing this straight up. Get off Wiggins contract for next season and can give Kuminga enough run to figure out what his potential is before deciding to pick up his option. Worst case, they free up a bunch of cap space over the summer.

He would operate like Jamie and Pelle as the SF
