[Amick] Jonathan Kuminga and his agent passed on Sacramento’s multi-year offer (~\(15M/yr) this past offseason, believing his market was much higher. He instead took the \)24M deal to stay with Golden State despite the internal tension.
They acting like gsw wouldnt have just matched the offer sheet. If you gonna stay against your will anyway you might aswell take the 24
Yeah, more money up front and two years instead of three. He made the right call.
The team option is not a good call because he doesn’t control that. His team does. Nothing stopping his new team from cutting bait and leaving him with just the $22 million he earned sitting on the bench for the Warriors this year.
It’s not ideal. But, being stuck for two years max is better than three.
Plus, he doesn’t want to be there. Any trade to any team would be fine, and he could leave after a year.
A team is not going to trade assets for him just to cut him. And if they did, cutting him would just let him be a free agent sooner. There’s no way in hell he doesn’t have a spot somewhere in the league.
That’s the gamble. If he gets injured, as in, career-ending injured, then his team’s cutting bait and he only gets $22 million. That’s the worst case scenario.
Another likely scenario, though not armageddon, is if he just sucks. His team declines his option and then works out a new deal with him that’s cheaper than $22 million a year.
It’s also worth mentioning that Kuminga’s value is so low right now that no serious team is offering any real assets. So it’s not like they’d lose much if they cut bait after half a season (based on the intel we know at least).
Probably worth the risk. The downside is losing \(8M. The upside is gaining \)16M at the very least.
With how rare career ending injuries are, feels like a pretty easy gamble to make.
If he gets cut he can easily sign for 15M with another team as a worst case scenario.
This is the rate GSw wanted him to sign initially. So Kuminga signing this would have done their bidding as planned.
Operation tank almost succeeded. But then the playoffs happened and they had to give him that 24 to prevent the QO NTC
22⁄1 year is still more money than 15⁄3 years
The team option was just about trying to juice his trade value. I doubt either side went into that deal thinking that there was a scenario where the W’s would pick up that option and keep him around for another season.
Kuminga wanted a player option. He settled for the team option because he’s that low value across the league. It’s just the funniest NBA negotiation we’ve seen in a while because both sides overplayed their hands and then fate blew it all up along with Jimmy’s ACL.
I can’t recall another low mid player that has fommanded this much press coverage ever. I was tired of it before the season, the resurgence is a nightmare
Don’t think the Warriors overplayed anything. The goal was always to use him for salary matching.
RFA isn’t an easy path to a contract extension. Grimes/Cam Thomas had to settle for qualifying offers that are $15M less than JK’s salary.
He needs to make 23 mil in 2 years if they cut him to still match the kings offer (that the warriors would’ve matched). He’ll be better of financially and be away from the warriors sooner.
It means he is a FA then
Player options are for ppl who have proved their worth. You’re not going to get that at 22.
Kings never hinted at an offer sheet. Only the Nets and Jazz were waiting on the wings with the potential of an offer sheet. Amick’s referring to the sign & trade that the Kings had on the table and thankfully didn’t go through with.
especially when the team obviously wants to trade you anyway
I was going to come and say this exact thing. So glad that we still have a few smart fans lol.
First thing is to agree to a number
Next thing is to discuss a deal with the warriors.
Kuminga passed, so SAC reslotted the money to Schroeder
im so tired of hearing about this dude.
Imagine how us Warriors fans feel
Also the aiyuk shit just a year before this drama if you follow football
I’m a dubs fan and kuminga fan. I’m annoyed they benched him. He’s better than at least half the current roster, no reason he shouldn’t have been playing if dubs want to win. They either just didnt have patience, or didnt know how to use him. It’s not shooting cuz they play GP2 who is shooting 25% from 3 but was still in rotation.
This. If they let him play starter minutes he is an easy 20-22PPG scorer. I don’t know what the coaching staff’s problem is with him. Let him play or trade him.
There are quite a few players that, given starter minutes and shots, will give you 20-22ppg. That doesn’t mean they’re players you want starting on your team.
Fair point. Then trade him if you aren’t even going to play a 20+ PPG scorer. It’s not like the Warriors offense has been some thing of beauty the last few years.
Everybody involved in the actual on-court basketball decisions obviously want him traded. They’re doing what they need to do, but Joe Lacob isn’t holding up his end.
How many of those players get DNP-CD for 16 games in a row?
Kuminga
Rome Streetz pfp goes hard
Dirty ass finger nail tho. (I fw Rome Streetz tho)
Lmao it’s so gross I thought it was part of his stache 😭
Maybe Kum bucket really was an appropriate nickname to reference the constant circlejerk around him
W Rome Streetz
At what point do you just trade the dude to be done with it?
I actually don’t know what GS is doing anymore. Is it really worth trying to squeeze a second rounder or whatever worth all this drama?
While I agree with the sentiment, let’s see if he’s on the roster past the deadline first. It’s really common for teams to wait until the last minute to make trades
Oh definitely. I just figured all the drama surrounding the situation would be enough for the FO to pull the trigger even on a less than ideal return.
The owner likes him likes him. He’s kept him too long and got really attached.
Thanks for clicking on the post and talking about him in spite of it.
yw
If you use old reddit you can download the RES extension to filter posts containing his name. Only works on the web though.
Kuminga is not good enough to get talked about this much
Well there is nothing to talk about
Yah I wonder if anything big will happen at the deadline. Idk if Kuminga will even get traded anymore since Jimmy is out
He doesn’t have any value. No reason to trade him for nothing.
He has value, even just as a 23 mil expiring.
Kuminga is the the Kim Kardashian of the NBA
Nah that’s Ben Simmons.
Kum Kardashian
yeah but he scored 20 points in 20 minutes that one time during a blowout loss!
25% of the time, he has a good game 100% of the time.
Well they found posting about him triggers engagement and clicks, it seems, so the fire was lit. The more ppl engage and comment, the more we will see kuminga posts.
New CBA has killed the trade market besides dumbasses like Nico spicing things up. So we’re stuck talking about players who want to be on other teams like Kuminga and Giannis because there’s a higher chance they get moved
GOAT in skill level to PR ratio.
I can’t remember hearing about anyone that much who had that low of a skill level.
Bronny gets talked about more, Kuminga cooks bronny in his sleep.
Maybe its just the recency bias,
But has there ever been a player this average (hes not going to be an allstar in his career) talked about for so long so frequently?
Not counting weird personal things like Nick Young, Javale, and D-lo.
Usually a mid lakers player
THT trade rumors were crazy a few years back now that I think about it
Like JJ hickerson was available to be traded for Amare in 2010
LOL
Does Bronny count?
The Man said “average” player, not dogwater nepo player. /Jk
You should be fired out of a cannon for even putting Kuminga and Bronny in the same paragraph. Bronny is a great vibes guy that is averaging an extremely efficient 16 high fives / 12 Daps / 14 waters handed to teammates on 89% True Sitting. You still have time to delete this before the Klutch Shooters find you.
Definitely getting over 10k steps. You left that part out
Fair
Tbf the kid was atleast a B-tier in terms of IG following before he even got into the league.
Bol Bol comes to mind as a player so average talked about more than they probably should be. Kuminga is a weird case because it seemed like right away he was in the dog house and has never been able to find his way out. Players usually don’t stick around on team that long in those situations
Bol Bol has just been talked about alot by Shaq though, who is just a bad analyst (incredibly talented at other things though mind you) and decides to stick on certain jokes well after they’ve expired.
Nah Bol is talked about constantly besides Shaq. It’s been dying down now though. Ppl with brains saw he had chances in Orlando and Suns and never capitalized
He’s an icon in 2k MyTeam culture, hip hop culture since he’s always chilling at concerts, his highlight comps on YouTube have way more views than majority of players.
People also talk about Bol as a prime example of wasted potential too, having all the right body tools, but he’s infamous for being nonchalant and lazy with attending practices or trying to play within the team.
There’s also the small Bol Bol fan base that swears it’s just coaches and politics not giving him a chance.
2K is very fair, guess I haven’t seen the others so fair enough
Kyle Kuzma maybe. I sort of feel bad for him relative to these conversations normally though. He isn’t a good fit for the Warriors system, but in another system he could at least succeed as a good stats bad team kinda guy.
Hey there’s still time for him to be better then Tatum
Myles Turner was in trade rumors for years. He’s probably better than Kuminga overall, but fits the never an allstar criteria.
As much as I hate this dude, once this drama is finally over and he can focus on his game and improvements outside of the bay, he can potentially be an all star…it’s a reach, but if he grows his game, it’s very possible.
We will see, maybe his hatred for Kerr, and being in a new place will open his eyes.
I honestly think there’s over 100 players that could potentially be an all star
Yeah, it’s entirely possible a change of scenery and wanting to prove them wrong leads to an entirely different Kuminga on another team. Norm Powell isn’t a great comp in terms of skillset, but his early years were pretty lackluster and it wasn’t until he bounced around a little bit that he all of a sudden was in the all-star conversation.
Very unlikely. Most Warriors/Kuminga haters treat him like he’s a complete bum but he’s not. He’s definitely decent but most teams are not going to give any random role player the ball for 35 minutes. They really need players who can space and make catch and shoot open threes, dribble drive and make quick reads and create open threes/dunks, or be extremely great on the defensive side. Kuminga is not good at any of these. The specific niche he is good at are he can create a shot for himself at around average efficiency with reliability and he can cut/score in transition. He can only really succeed leading a bench squad for a team with very low depth or a first/second option on a bum team like the Wizards where he’s unlikely to really get any accolades due to lack of team success.
TT shump and the nets pick maybe?
I hear you, and I agree, but every Kuminga article/post gets upvoted to the front page of r/nba, so like… what is it? Are we tired of Kuminga news or do we want to read Kuminga news? If it’s the former, these posts just die in New??
Edit: And now we’re also engaging in Kuminga news lmao
Check out the Kings sub. We have people who think a change of scenery will turn him into prime MJ.
The media push for kuminga is indicative of how much the nba still hates gsw. The number of people defeated by the dynasty. Kuminga is the definition of empty stats
I’d stay at a workplace I don’t like that requires less work for an additional 10 million too
lol seriously. people overthinking this
Is this supposed to make Kuminga look bad or something lol
Think it’s supposed to just show that he didn’t really have a market.
Probably the background motivation for MDJ’s market value crash out. Tired of hearing about the non-existent market for this dude and got way too candid at a press conference.
They’re obliterating his trade value and simultaneously mad hes untradable
I mean, could just be he was already untradeable, so it wasn’t an obliteration of his trade value so to speak.
Telling the world somebody the world knows is worth nothing is worth nothing isn’t really doing anything other than confirming to the world that everybody’s in agreement.
He’s been good whenever healthy and not getting jerked around on minutes/dnps. The only smart play is to play the F out of him until the off-season then trade.
9m per year is pretty significant for him
For me too
Imagine how much that is if he went back to the Congo, dude could live like a decadent Roman emperor. Kumingula
Well the reason he turned that down is golden state would’ve just matched it and they he would’ve been stuck on a multi year deal in golden state
No, I highly doubt it. The benefit of accepting an offer with another team even if the current team can match, you can get higher salary and forces the current team to accept the new terms (like no trade clause, front load the salary etc..). Kings wasn’t offering that much money or trade options. It’s no brainer for JK, accept the more money and it’s two years.
The report also said he thought he was also worth more than the kings offer
His agent is an amateur, and probably had a hand in how misguided his development has been.
Higher contract means more money in his pocket too. His agent benefits
yeah but his agent prob has other clients so he can be more risky with his approach than kuminga himself
Probably, coulda, woulda. It didn’t happen though. He didn’t take any risks. He took the money. Look up his agent and his most profitable client is Terry Rozier. All of his other clients aren’t doing well and are free agents. So I doubt he’s swimming in cash and can afford to pass on this deal.
I mean his clients are still signing for tens of millions then. That’s not exactly small business. Just because there’s much bigger agents doing 300 million dollar deals for superstars.
This is all subjective. We don’t really know the numbers and even if you’re swimming in cash, doesn’t devalue the amount of money you’re earning. My point, it’s still a lot of money to pass up
His agent is the same guy who repped Oladipo when he fumbled the Indy/houston contracts and then ended up on a vet minimum with Miami.
Thank God, finally another post about Jonathan Kuminga.
At 15Ms a year GS would’ve just matched and laughed lol
Yeah that would be an absolute steal, yes he isn’t perfect but if you look at his per36 stats on games he starts he’d project to be around a 20/7/3 guy
It’s still so wild GS offered $24m
He’s a salary matching block. It’s wasn’t about JK playing on the court being worth 24M to the Warriors.
Because of cap apron, Warriors are only allowed to receive less salary in a trade than they send out.
This is getting kinda tiring lol
Kinda? I’m exhausted.
I’m burned out
As if the Warriors would have just let him walked for nothing in the offseason and be stuck with near 0 tradeable assets, restricted free agency is a real fucking thing.
It looks like letting him walk would have been better than the current situation.
Mayhaps but thats a case of hindsight is 20⁄20, Warriors werent thinking of getting rid of Kuminga, they wwre thinking about how to get the most out of Kuminga.
To simply let a less than 26 year old athletic big walk you would need him to be doing way worse things than that Kuminga has done as of now.
Internal tension or making 9 million dollars less. Hmmmmmm gotta think about this carefully.
Not sure why Sam is saying the Kings offer was \(15m/year. Everyone has reported it was 3 years for \)63m.
I feel badly that Steph has this crap going on.
#WHEN WILL THE KUMINGA RUMORS END?? FUCK!
i don’t understand the point of this post. of course he turned down \(15M from a bottom 3 organization in all of professional sports.. to instead play for a top organization and for \)9M more
where is the confusion here?
My god, if only he would put up numbers as the amount he is discussed.
As long as his lifetime of therapy does not exceed $9m he will come out ahead.
Impossible to value the opportunity cost.
At this point he’s not going to get a lucrative multi year deal.
This was supposed to be his prove it one year deal and the Warriors basically banished him to the shadow realm hoping some team would overpay for a perceived unknown commodity.
Maybe he gets another prove it deal somewhere else, but it’s quickly looking like he’s might be out of the league in the next couple of years.
I predict he’ll get either an inflated 2-3 yr deal from a tanking team or a longer cheaper one with a player option
He’ll probably be a tank commander somewhere for a contract until they realize that’s all he’ll ever be.
NOOOO
No shit he didn’t accept the lowball offer and this gets him to FA quicker
Why is there so much ink being spilled over Kuminga? Who cares? He’s a good young player but there is a post or article about him everyday. Trading him won’t change anything for the team who gets him and it won’t change anything for the Warriors.
What am I missing? Who cares?
The problem here is it’s the shambles Kings 😂
Trade him to the kings and get it over with
He’s just about his money. I don’t blame him but further makes me wonder why a team would trade for him.
I don’t know why Demar for Kuminga hasn’t happened yet.
DerRozan is 36, and will get like 26M next year. Looks like partially guranteed, so the Warriors would only have to 10M guarnteed.
Kuminga is obviously much younger and has a team option next year.
Ultimately, JK is worth more to the Warriors because of his salary, potential, and team option.
Now if the Kings want to throw in pick, that’s different. Or if they involve a third team and the Warriors get something else? Also fine.
