Kings should have paid him over signing Schröder. Keon is a more impactful player even without having the ball in his hands and fits way more easily into any given roster construction for that reason. He could and should have been part of the future of this team.

Only reason they’re trading him at all is because they DIDN’T extend him and now have no ability to hold on to him if he wants to leave. Which they have all but guaranteed by continuing to give him inconsistent minutes and DNPs in favor of washed vets that also won’t be on the team in a couple years or months.

Hopefully he ends up on a decent team that I don’t hate, so I can root for him to succeed and clown on the dipshit Kings FO for fucking up one of the easiest wins they ever stumbled ass-backwards into

Sometimes a contender is only a piece away from the chip. Spurs traded for nazr mohamed in 05 and he was huge in the playoffs for them.

Even though it’s technically not allowed, I’m sure teams will run potential deals past his agent before deciding what to send for him. For example, a team probably won’t offer a great pick unless his agent unofficially says that he would agree to a 4 year /$60M deal in the offseason.

Exactly this. Keon’s contract can be a double edged sword because yes you’re getting him for cheap, but if you’re a capped out team, you likely can’t retain him.

All these people saying he’s a no brainer for pick 25-37 miss out on the fact that rookie contracts are more valuable than ever in this CBA. Many of these teams absolutely would prefer having a shot at a young/contract controlled player to bet on like Hugo Gonzalez, Raynaud, Kalkbrenner, etc. instead of having a half year rental.

The problem is that a capped out team (who likely benefit the most from this low contract) also only get early bird rights and therefore couldn’t easily re-sign him.

So you’re asking these teams would they rather have a half year rental or a contract controlled rookie for 3+ seasons. I think as a Kings fan, you could definitely understand preferring Raynaud for 3+ seasons than a rental for Keon who absolutely will find a 10-15M contract elsewhere.

His big problem on the Kings is he’s not a true guard. You need playmakers on the floor for him to be successful doing the dirty work. They can’t play him and Monk together because then they’re too small. DeRozan and Lavine aren’t great at running a fluid offense so it’s hard for him to fit there too. 

He’d be great on a team like the Lakers that have plenty of playmakers but desperately need defenders. 

It’s specifically utility to this current Kings team. The defense of one player doesn’t matter when the other team will just attack Monk, DeRozan, and Lavine. Kinda like Caruso on the Bulls - wasted slot for development for a guy who will play exceptional defense that doesn’t end up mattering because the rest of the team are sieves.

He’s getting DNPs because the Kings are fucking idiots, not because he isn’t good.

He’s gets DNP’d because Mike Brown hates him and Doug Christie is trying to lose games right now. He’d be the best defender on multiple teams, including the Lakers. There’s a reason why 10 teams are supposedly interested in him. And it’s not because he gets DNPs.

Yes weirdly people who have actually watched him play significant minutes over the past couple seasons and the 10+ front office executives preparing to fork over a FRP for him are making him out to be a better player than he is. 🙄

He is an exceptional 3 and D player. Always plays good to great defense, and he shoots ~40% from 3 so he can score and stretch the floor. Ellis fits easily into any even semi-decently constructed roster because he doesn’t need the ball at all to have a significant positive impact on the game. Plus he’s cheap and can be signed long term if he works out.

It took me a while to understand this, but you’re 100% right.

Ellis is like 6’3-6’4”, he’s more of a combo guard than a 3&d wing

He’d be the fourth guard behind white-Pritchard-Simon’s with the likelihood of becoming the third guard if we trade Simon’s or don’t keep him this summer

He wouldn’t really be behind any of those guys they mostly play wing spots and Ellis is a pure guard

Definitely wouldn’t be a “waste” of a frp, Ellis is better long term than some prospect in the late 20s especially when we have another pick in the early 30s anyways which would be on a wayyyy better contract than a late first round pick

Of course if we are in on Zubac or Claxton and need the first for that then the Ellis idea takes a backseat

He is most definitely not tasked with being the best defender on the floor. That’s Keegan’s job

If you watch their games, you see why he has problems getting on the court. He is great at getting into the passing lanes and anticipating passes. However, he reaches a lot and gets beat quite often. He is not the lockdown defender some people think he is. He is not good at handling the ball and initiating an offense so you can’t use him as a secondary ball handler. He is effective only as a catch and shoot player. If they can get a 1st rounder for him, it’d be a steal.

He went from an undrafted player to a rotation guy who also managed to start a good amount of games not sure why you’re claiming stunted development from the organization. He’s way above the typical outcome for that type of player

I love Keon, hate how this got handled, but also understand a split was probably going to happen anyway. Just wrong timeline and will cost too much for a team needing to tear it down to the studs. He’s going to get traded to some contending team and be a positive contributor and will generate many “lol kangz” circle jerk posts after a big playoff game. But to play devil’s advocate, he’s just never made a strong case for himself this season. Now a part of that is probably from jerking his role and minutes around. But defensively he’s just been kind of a mess. Doesn’t stay in front of people because he’s constantly gambling for back tap steals. Don’t know why Doug isn’t cleaning that up, or maybe he is trying and that’s why Keon ain’t playing. Also he’s a 1-2 defender, don’t put him on bigger or stronger wings.

Offensively, his shooting numbers are down but I think he’s just forcing because of playing time yoyo and contract anxiety. He’s a good shooter. Very limited with the ball though. He can get a little fiesty attacking close outs. But generally limited. It’s also why Nique has been eating into his minutes.

And that last part should be repeated for people that don’t watch the team. There has been a log jam at guard but Nique getting into the rotation is probably what did Keon’s minutes in more than anything.

We need shooting at every position. And the 29th pick is far more valuable for to use in a trade than it would be to actually draft a player with it. That’s a guaranteed contract and roster spot to someone who almost certainly would never sniff the court. That’s why title contenders who are drafting late almost always trade out of that pick anyway.
