Chet rarely creates his own shots too. Basketball Reference has the stats on percentage of field goals assisted. Chet is assisted on 64% of his 2’s and 96% of his 3’s. Duren doesn’t take 3’s and is assisted on 62% of his 2’s. It is a wash, if not a tiny advantage for Duren in self creation.

The Thunder and the Pistons are very similar in that they have one offensive dynamo, a bunch of strong defenders, good coaching, good effort, and a good win/loss ratio.

But ultimately Shai is better than Cade, even though Cade is very, very good.

Ajay Mitchell is literally a bench player.

If you are going to talk about Ajay, then why are you not going on about how Cade has Tobias. That Cade has Robinson making more 3’s than anyone on the Thunder by almost 50%.

The Thunder have also had an enormous amount of injuries, except for SGA who has played quite a few more games than Cade.

You are talking about a guy who has played half the season, (poorly), and a bench guy averaging less than 4 assist. Most of this playmaking comes when SGA is on the bench.

Shai isn’t Luka who also has Lebron/Reaves. he isn’t Jokic who also has Murray. He isn’t Mitchell who has Garland.

We have consistently seen the Thunder’s offense turn to shit without Shai because Mitchell and this version of J-Dub aren’t good enough at running offense. J-Dub has literally been scoring at the same efficiency as Westbrook. They might a little better than what Cade has had around him, but it is still bad.

Cade is a better passer than Shai (though he is pretty sloppy with the turnovers), but Shai is MUCH better at getting buckets than Cade.

Cade is getting 26 points at 56% True Shooting. Shai is getting 32 points at 67% True Shooting. That gap is gargantuan. Shai is scoring at the efficiency of dunking centers at high volume as a guard. The efficiency gap is TWICE the size of the gap from Cade to Ron Holland.

You are making a big deal of a guy having *slightly* more play making help than Cade. It is silly.

For some, the idea is that most valuable should mean the most valuable player relative to their team. Shai is the best player in the league. Conversely, Thunder without Shai are still a top team in the league regardless. In a small yet revealing sample size, this team is 7-1 without Shai in the 8 games he’s missed in the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 seasons. They’re deep and talented. There are quite a few stars in this league that I believe are by definition more valuable to their team than Shai is to the Thunder. Teams that cannot win without their star. But I also think Shai is having the best season/is the best player. It’s a nuanced discussion. I think Shai is the mvp but it’s not an insult to give other guys a nod. Especially the guys taking some, frankly, non playoff rosters into the playoffs.
