[Nightengale] The Mets will assume the entire $20 million of Robert’s contract.
Least surprising part of the trade
Obviously Jerry Reinsdorf looks at this as such a win for himself. Fuckin loser ass owner. This guy is such a piece of shit.
Without Jordan probably a top 3 hated owner of all time.
He might be there with Jordan.
I kinda just realized that Chicago sports revolve entirely around their teams milking their lone championship.
The Bears Super Bowl shuffling since ‘85
The Bulls perpetually living in the shadows glory of the Jordan years
The White Sox being a dumpster fire, but “at least they won a ring this century”
The Cubbies coasting on the broken curse since 2016
Even the Blackhawks have been coasting for the past decade
I don’t think an Angels fan should be the one saying that but lol.
I’m a Chicago sports fan and he’s 100% correct. I don’t understand the downvotes.
I mean you used the 85 Bears but ignored the 90s Bulls. Your narrative kinda falls apart considering the Bulls won 6 rings in the 90s.
You just have to tweak the wording to make this accurate. Outside of the brief window after lucking into Rose, the Bulls have been in perpetual basketball purgatory and Reinsdorf has absolutely been milking the Jordan years for 3 decades.
I’d give the Hawks a pass here since they have been doing a good job of rebuilding the org post dynasty. But they were a horribly run franchise prior to Rocky taking over for his dad.
But OP’s sentiment that the bulk of Chicago sports owners are rent-seeking swine is on point.
Really should have spread those championships out a little more tbh
Genuinely one of the worst takes I’ve ever seen
Uh, no. Source: Lifelong Chicagoan.
“Milking their lone championship” and its a track record many cities would kill for yeah man sure.
I think you’re underselling the futility/mediocrity of these franchises, especially compared to similar markets.
Cubbies
you can just say Cubs, thanks
Phish sucks
I mean maybe I’m missing something obvious, but this trade seems like a huge win the the Sox. Two young, controllable assets, one very recently was a prized top protect, AND a $20M salary dump… All for an inkjet prone guy who even when healthy is just not that good. He had a breakout year that was a flash in the pan.
I want owners to spend money too and I’m sure Jerry is truly scum of the earth, but that seems like a win for Chicago.
Its a terrible trade for the Sox. Acuna is a generous 5’8 180 lb utility man at best. The other pitcher is a complete nobody 12th round pick who put up poor numbers in the Ivy League. The Sox starting outfield looks to be the worst opening day outfield in history.
I wouldn’t be super worried about a 22 year old infielders height and weight– there have been so many guys that have been successful while being ‘undersized’ in the MLB that it’s not even worth trying to list names. Also, if you think Acuna’s one partial year last year is a final indictment on his ability, then how are you rationalizing Robert who has been awful even when healthy for two years now?
I think Robert’s ability has been quite over-hyped b/c he’s played a fine CF when healthy. But the reality is, he’s being supremely overpaid to barely produce a 650 OPS. His SO% puts him up there with guys K’ing 200+ times/per162 and his walk rate is paltry. His WAR is misleading b/c it is inflated by his HR, but a cursory look a baseballreference shows that his dWAR is only 0.3-0.4 over the last few years, so his ‘value’ as a CF is also overstated.
I’m not saying Acuna is going to develop into his brother, but I am saying that even if he doesn’t, him and a throw-in arm is a great haul for an oft-injured, bad OF while not retaining any of his $20M salary.
Having watched a decent amount of Acuna already I can tell you he’s got a ways to go before he’s an everyday player.
Acuna was almost definitely getting DFA’d before opening day. He was almost nontendered
There’s no reason the Sox should be trying to save $20M. They should have taken on the salary to get better/more players back.
And the fact that they literally just picked up the $20M this offseason as an option lol. Crazy.
It’s good for a salary dump to get anything of significance, but the Sox missed their opportunity at the deadline to maximize their return.
Still, I don’t think the return would’ve been earth-shattering but the rumors at the time were the Sox were asking for Vientos, Sproat, or Tong. They had to settle for Acuna and a 12th round arm 6 months later.
They may have been able to get a prospect in the top 10 of somebody’s farm system.
They had no need for a salary dump, they picked up Robert’s option. Silly to pick it up and then trade away for pennies. Sure, better to have Acuña etc. than not, but it’s not a salary dump if they literally just picked up the option this offseason.
Uh, are you thinking of the wrong Acuña or something? A couple outlets had him at the back end of top 100 lists. Fangraphs put a 45 FV on him, that’s a bench piece. And that’s what he’s been. He couldn’t even hit AAA pitching, and he’s a plus but not elite fielder and runner.
He’s like the third dude on the bench on a contender.
is this a joke? they won the robert trade who is barely worth over 10mil.
not only they save, they get prospects.
They didn’t need to save anything if they didn’t pick up his option this offseason. That’s what’s silly about this whole thing.
They got free prospects by picking it up. If they didn’t pick up his option they would have paid the buyout and not received any prospects…
It’s not about “winning” the trade (and this is a push, if anything), but about asset (mis)management. The White Sox should have taken on the salary to get better/more players in return.
This is similar to the Caruso/Giddey trade. Bulls should have gotten more assets back.
One million for every point he’ll hit above .200
He’s a good defender and probably worth it considering the FA market. Dont tell that to the white sox who have a low payroll and no outfielders, though
The most reddit answer ever. He plays good defense.
At BEST
He probably costs about $5mm more than Bader will get this year, but will a shorter commit. His upside is much higher and Bader’s BABIP-fueled 2025 will be difficult to repeat.
I think it’s a good roll of the dice. If he flops, he’s gone after this season.
Bader was 3x better than him, and the upside is way overstated.
Bader rocked a .359 BABIP last season, career .305. Robert had a .274, career .319.
Bader also has 70 more PAs than Robert.
He is also 3 years younger and will be cheaper than Bader without blocking anyone in the minors.
This is unquestionably a good deal for the Mets, even if Robert ends up being what he was last season.
Im with you I will say i think Bader made changes to his batting last year that will stick and help him continue to be the batter he was last year. With that said I like Robert alot and prefer him. Plus you’re only really locked into 1 year of him. He’s worth it. I wanted Robert last year and was disappointed we couldn’t get him at the tradeline. Im excited
paying $20 million for a below average player who can’t play a full season is not a good deal.

How’d the NL East go for you last year?
If Castellanos was on the Mets you’d all be desperate to polish that turd too.
Jalen Hurts stinks
your best burn is bringing up the Super Bowl MVP? Damn being a Mets fan is sad
Nice an upgrade over our current CF hahaha
People aren’t understanding that at his worst, he is still slightly better than Tyrone Taylor lol (who i love)
Yessir, im in the exact same boat as you haha
Reinsdorf: hmm maybe this Steve Cohen guy ain’t so bad after all
“No more money coming out of my piggy bank!”
Also him at the next CBA: We need a salary cap to prevent owners like Cohen from buying all the players.
Another win for Jerry’s wallet
They were already over the last tax bracket with the Bichette signing and Robert is only here for one year. This does nothing to hurt the organization other than drain Steve Cohen’s wallet.
It’s also worth nothing that Robert also has an option for 2027 at 20m (which the Mets can decline). So he may be here for 2.
Steve Cohen’s net worth has increased by a few billion dollars since he bought the Mets, even while being baseballs top/second highest spender. Nothing about Stevie’s wallet is getting drained.
I wish I could confidently say we’re going to be using the money saved to plug some holes
Well we kind of already did with murakami
Makes sense, little less uneven now
You know what happens when you assume..
It’s bizarre to me that when the Dodgers sign someone, the comments are full of “salary cap now!” comments, but when something like this happens, they aren’t full of “salary floor now!”
Free up space maybe extend Murakami. White sox needa do it right and they can be back in a few years or even 3 years.
Feels like they would have gotten a better return from the Reds by eating 10 mil of the contract….but what do I know.
that assumes you value winning baseball more, or having a functional and competitive baseball team, more than a couple million buckeroons.
The real trade acquisition right here
This is a really good trade for the Sox IMO. Acuña wasn’t good last year but he’s a young player who didn’t swing and miss much, if he can play enough he’s not far from a real MLB player.
crazy mets werent able to get any money from sox in addition to giving up prospects for a mediocre player.
The White Sox traded away a + CF for a bust/pinch runner
