Mike Dunleavy Jr. on Jonathan Kuminga’s trade demand: “In terms of demands, when you make a demand, there needs to be demand on the market.”
lol
Why are the warriors so awful at handling this stuff? Lol Steph has carried this org for too long man he deserves better
We were the worst franchise in all of sports for like two decades before Steph arrived and we’ll be one of the worst franchises in the NBA when he leaves
Those Baron Davis years were fun though
They were - I was at game 6 of the WE BELIEVE year when we defeated the Mavs. The entire stadium didn’t sit for 30 mins before the game to 30 mins after…
But there’s a reason why winning a FIRST ROUND matchup was basically like winning the championship and to this day, only the 2015 and maybe the 2022 championship top that moment
people don’t understand when we say that felt like championship im convinced fans forgot how bad we really were
People didn’t watch Troy Murphy and Bob sura with foyle and it shows
Adonal Foyle’s adoptive mother was a guest lecturer at my university for a semester. I learned a lot about what he’s like outside basketball from talking to her and while he might not have been the greatest NBA player, he’s quite a remarkable human being.
Dude was beloved in Oakland from what I remember
true i remember seeing him around the town as a kid which is rare for any players. saw harrison barnes once but that was when he was on the kings lol
I never thought we’d make the playoffs let alone win a series, let alone a championship
I don’t think people understand just how goated Steph is for us long time Warriors fans who had to suffer through all that
I’m not using hyperbole when I say this run has been an absolute miracle
We beat a 2 seed as an underdog in the playoffs just last year and it was a disappointing postseason lol
Most fans today weren’t fans before 2015. They don’t know the struggle.
More like year than years really. They only made the playoffs once with Davis, the 07 We Believe run. Then the front office couldn’t even keep the core of that team together for the next season. They were that inept at that point.
Although I suppose it worked out since Steph was in the draft 2 years later and the Dubs were bad enough to get him.
Like many dynasties, Steph Curry was at the right place at the right time. And they tried to trade him, but they got lucky and it fell through
lol no
Steph was drafted before Lacob bought the team, before Jerry West, Steve Kerr and Bob Myers were hired, before Klay and Dray were drafted…
He was drafted to a laughing stock franchise owned by the worst owner in sports in Cohan, the worst front office exec in sports in Rowell and drunk ass Don Nelson as coach who would literally drink whiskey all day and was just coasting trying to collect his last few wins to get the all-time win record
He had a backcourt mate in Ellis who said they can’t play together and a “leader” in Stephen Jackson who literally bypassed the GM to negotiate his contract extension with Rowell, only to demand a trade before the ink dried on the paper…
He knew the franchise was in such a bad spot that he literally refused to workout for them and told them not to draft him
Everything after that was basically because of Steph…Mark Jackson was literally fired for his horrible hockey substitutions and lying to players like Ezeli saying all his teammates hated him and was so paranoid he boxed coaches out of coaching meetings…
This was a dumpster fire of a situation and Steph prevailed and turned the franchise into one of the greatest dynasties in the NBA
A literal miracle if you were around back then
Fuck Mark Jackson. Then. Now. Always.
I second this, fuck MARK JACKSON!
Steph told the Warriors not to draft him? I’ve never heard this before
Supposedly he wanted to go to Knicks, who had 8th pick.
A famously well run organization under James Dolan
There’s no “supposedly” about it. Curry confirmed it.
But, also, Warriors offered either Monte or Curry for Bogut, and the Bucks what they chose
Wanting to go to the Knicks and not wanting to go to Golden State are wildly different statements, although both can be true.
This is true from his book
And Steve Kerr, then the Suns GM, almost got him. He tries to orchestrate a trade up to get him. Kerr always knew.
all of this can be true and steph still got incredibly lucky. all dynasties have luck
At least yall give hope to other badly run orgs that they too could luck into a generational player and win a title
Chase Center will have a Spirit Halloween banner after Steph is gone lol
Clippers erasure or were the Warriors that bad?
Clippers certainly have an argument but it was BAD.
Love this article written shortly after they traded Monta Ellis for Andrew Bogut and the fans boo’d Lacob for it.
https://grantland.com/features/how-annoy-fan-base-60-easy-steps/
I remember that article so well and just being like, wow, this is the most I’ve ever thought about this barely relevant franchise.
That was my sports fandom. Just re-reading that gave me shivers. I was in High school for the Chris Washburn fiasco….Jesus we went through some dark times.
Every time I see a Grantland link in the wild, it brings a smile to my face.
I was at the game where the fans boo’d lacob. I was a hardcore monta ellis fan at the time and was crushed by the trade.
I got a good video of Kevin love, Luke ridnour and the rest of the timberwolves reaction as Rick Barry got on the mic. A lot of the boo’s were coming from the 2nd deck.
https://youtu.be/KYXpPFEXOew?si=6FNrbr1Hnv0FmF9N
warriors basically had 1 player people knew about and then a bunch of “I guess these guys can play a game of basketball”. Absolutely no where close to what they are today. Had the entire bay area to themselves for a market and really only Oakland people tried to come out and support them. It was rough. I feel like they tried real hard to give tickets away at some point
We were one of the worst, and the post-Steph years will be rough, but I don’t think we’ll be one of the worst. Chris Cohen vs Lacob is a huge difference. He has his faults, but he’s willing to spend for success.
So the bulls with Jordan
prob cause bob myers left
Bob Myers made some awful decisions too like being so in love with Wiseman, i mean obviously no GM is perfect and he made great moves but still could have handled it much better, as a contender you get a 2nd overall pick, a 7th pick, a 14th pick and you whiff on all of them
This is revisionist history. Wiseman was pretty unanimously considered a top 2 pick that draft. For years leading up he was even projected 1st until Ant balled out in college.
Plus they needed a 5? Idk why people think it was a dumb pick shit just didn’t pan out
Yeah. Ant isnt even a consensus top pick.
I always thought it was the owner Lacob who meddled with those picks
They all meddle, very rarely someone has full power in NBA teams
They can also keep tossing the puck of responsibility for whoever is in the hot seat. It was Steve Kerr, then it was Myers, then Lacob, and now its the org as a whole
I mean that’s how it always is when multiple people have input in decision making, nobody wants to take the blame
The owner absolutely has full power if they choose to wield it. Wiseman and Kuminga are directly because Lacob hijacked the front office decision making to create his second light years ahead timeline.
yeah from what i can remember, i think it was Lacob who wanted wiseman
…and an overpay to Jordan Poole when he still had a year on his contract
But, Warriors don’t win it in 2022 without Myers. He did an amazing job for that one
You spelled Jerry West wrong
Bob Myers is the reason why they’re in this shithole
Can’t help it. This is the only “asset” the team has left from their two timelines period and his largish salary means he’s the only player they can trade for a meaningful piece. Which they won’t get because he’s not worth a meaningful piece.
Warriors have been awful at handling everything since day one, they’re a bum franchise who got lucky with Curry’s ankles basically underpaying him and the entire franchise was built on that, then the 2016 cap boom even more luck
Holy copium.
They’ve done a ton of stuff poorly, but a 4x championship dynasty doesn’t appear solely based on luck…
Thats a nephew take. When Bob was GM everyone wanted to come to GS. Other pro sports teams were consulting him because our org was doing so well. We took care of Klay through 2 horrible injuries, made guys like Iggy part of the behind the scenes so they have a career after basketball, gave Steph a very reasonable contract after never playing a full season and 2 or 3 ankle surgeries. All our assistants went and got HC jobs elsewhere. It wasn’t until Draymond fucked the relationship with KD and then punched Poole that things took a turn for the worst.
Somewhere in the multiverse Jordan Poole punched Draymond and he became a calm reasonable player afterward and they won more championships
I mean, maybe people who shouldn’t be demanding trades shouldn’t be demanding trades lol. I don’t think they’ll be real disappointed that Kuminga is mad at that.
You didn’t watch the whole interview. Right after this he says and we’ll see how that unfolds in the next few weeks. Wasn’t a shot at all. The quote in the title cut it off.
If only we could find whoever ruined his market.
Lmao even
I’m not even a Kuminga fan but it’s pretty clear this entire organization fucking hates the dudes guts for whatever reason
It doesn’t make any sense even if you hate the guy you should be hyping him up as much as you can to get something.
hating for the love of the game at this point. can’t give him no praise at all.
At some point gotta make an example outta the guy. Sends a message about how they do business.
“We want people to know that we do business poorly.”
If you’ve coached or played with Kuminga, you’d probably hate dealing with it too. He half-asses possessions, breaks the flow of plays to jack up reckless shots, and his defense leaves a lot to be desired. On top of that, he and his agent openly complain.
People forget the NBA is a very small circle. Teams talk, and his diva reputation is already out there. And while a lot of folks here love to criticize Kerr, especially since he’s been unusually blunt about Kuminga, Kerr is actually extremely well liked and respected around the league.
All that can be true but idk how the comment helps the Warriors solve the problem. I agree Kerr is respected (outside of overly justifying Green’s antics), but I don’t think Kerr needs to score league kudos through this Kuminga situation.
Unless they think they can motivate him this way? Seems improbable.
Kuminga and his agent have been difficult for the last few years, but have become insufferable the last year or so
This is the FO telling Kuminga+his agent they are tired of his shit
Bro if the warriors arent gunna play him then send him somewhere else. Of course hes gunna be annoying he wants minutes
Youd think they wanna make the best out of curries last few years instead of being vindictive
If he ever actually gets traded, the hit pieces that come out afterward will feed generations.
It goes both ways. When a player openly talks shit, you can’t be singing his praises in hopes of getting a good offer. It will send a wrong message to other players. That you can talk shit about the team management without any consequences.
Besides other GMs are not idiots. They too watch games and generally aware all the dealings. There is no point of sugar coating.
This feels like a measured and sensible response. Yeah, the player has been wanting for a trade. We are looking for another team who wants the player.
He was in year two doing shams interviews talking he lost faith in Kerr and shit
Could be him refusing to do what the coach asks of him for 5 years.
Kerr tells him to rebound, box out, swing the ball, make rotations on defense. That he has the tools to be the next Marion and an all-star in that mold.
Instead, JK thinks he’s the next coming of Kobe and decides to hold the ball for 3 seconds, survey the defense (read: let them recover), then drive into 3 people and then take a long two or throw up his arms to hopefully draw a foul.
That explains why they don’t want him.
Doesn’t explain why every move this team makes it seems like they’re trying to make it so they get absolutely no return for him.
I think part of it is that them deciding to make those picks instead of trading them is pretty much why they only won one more championship with Steph after the retool.
Seems like some weird petty shit is going on and that’s a pretty plausible explanation. They seem to blame Kuminga and use him as scapegoat/punching bag.
The whole thing has been pretty bizarre honestly.
He’s not the first young player to struggle buying in to a championship/team playstyle.
But what usually happens is the team goes “yeah it’s not working out” 3 years prior and moves him before it turns into a 2+ year hostage crisis lmao.
Lacob’s fault
The issue is they shit on him and then reportedly want a kings ransom for him. Who knows if the trade reports are accurate but clearly they are asking more than what the market will pay for him and at the same time depressing his value.
If he’s been doing this for 5 years then it’s on GSW for not trading him earlier lol
Yeah players have been traded for far less. If they hate him so much and that he’s an apparently a problem to the coach, then why keep him? This is stupid.
Even if that were true, Jimmy Butler is on his side. And a front office just can’t do this. It poisons the well for all of your future business.
The only way this makes sense is if the GM wants to be fired. It’s just so stupid.
Blah blah blah. This is the same organization that complained about leakers. They’re just dickheads treating a man like shit over a game lol
So trade him or just keep jabing on the guy you’re paying on your roster?
Yeah but you dont bench him permanently bro lol he doesn’t deserve dnps
The hit pieces if he gets traded will be crazy.
NGL, I’m looking forward to those most of all
[Charania] Kuminga reportedly slept with every coaches wife.
Kuminga once told Steve Kerr he didnt think “Nick” was a good name for his child and suggested that “Crah” would be more appropriate.
Putting aside kuminga and Kerr, his agent was doing a media tour during the offseason (which haven’t seen before) and posting kuminga highlights during losses this year. Think it’s more of a shot on his amateur agent who only has Kuminga as a “big” client
Well in that case it sounds even dumber…you’ve worked your asses off to tank this guy’s demand and the assets you’ll get in return, just to spite some no-name agent?!?
I could also see that MDJ knows there’s no actual market. Nothing he says or does will change that and does not expect to get any sort of tangible return in a trade.
So saying this could be wanting kuminga and his agent to put aside drama and the trade demand so that he can play instead of pretending he has an injury like he did a week or two ago.
said the quiet part out loud
Really unprofessional for a GM tbh lol I just don’t get the strategy in doing this
Everyone in the organization just straight up hates him, no strategy
Hate him so much they want to tank his tradability so they can keep him close. Bold strategy
“keep your friends close and your enemies closer” - Warriors prob
They’re gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse
Sounds like some messed up abusive behavior
It must be that they don’t want another team to have him and he turns out to be very productive.
But they still won’t let him go.
The level of pettiness is unmatched.
Before they get a kiss goodbye baby
Then just fucking trade him for a pile of magic beans. They’ve had suitors over the last two years, just Warriors have had unrealistic expectations about his trade value.
I’ve seen warriors fans on here propose trades that involve the wizards sending back picks for kuminga. Like, give me one reason why this would be attractive to us. I guess after that much winning you had no choice but to become completely delusional
Except Jimmy who had beefed with a lot of players.
Warriors might need to clean house. This is toxic to doing business with agents and free agents.
Even my buddy who is a fan hates him for ‘not buying in’. They crazy
Tbf, Mike Dunleavy has always been a cunt, so this isn’t surprising.
FMD
Dunleavy has always been a dipshit ever since his playing days
Not even loud, he YELLED that shit lmao
Trade deadline is in 2 weeks bro your leverage will only get worse
There never was any leverage
seriously. they literally had offers in the offseason for him and Warriors turned them all down
they don’t want him yet refused to trade him. now the relationship has only gotten worse
Incompetent organization does incompetent things. Only reason the Warriors have any relevance is because they drafted Steph.
Bob meyers was a great gm and Kerr was/is a great coach.
Lets not let the post dynasty time melt our memories/brains.
Bro just wants to hate. Calling an organization incompetent after winning four rings in 10 years is crazy work
The return that was available to them in the offseason was a lot lower due to cba rules on restricted free agents. They would have had to include more to make any trade work because Kuminga’s salary would have only counted at 50% for any salary matching requirements.
This is impossible for this sub to understand. I’ve made this comment 10x over the past year.
Weren’t those offers like Malik Monk or something?
We probably woulda given them a first rounder back then
it was malik monk and a top-14 protected pick, which from the Kings is pretty worthless because it will never convey
I really don’t understand what the problem is. If they don’t want to play him, get rid of him.
Yea it’s just getting worse somehow
If you want to have leverage, there needs to be a demand in the market
announcing to the entire association that no one wants a player should certainly boost the value of said player
You’d think they want their assets to be at high values considering Jimmy Butler just went down with an ACL
This is so weird. Like a vendetta against their own asset. Such a bad look. Jimmy supported him.
I don’t think they care anymore lol
Is it really a demand, considering they only signed him back to trade him. It’s more of a “hurry up” than demanding a trade. He was getting traded either way, they don’t want him.
Regardless this is a crazy thing to say as a GM to the public. He is essentially saying no one is interested in Kuminga bringing down his value
It’s hilarious tbh
Him saying this out loud doesn’t give anything away. The rest of the league has no interest and has clearly decided that he’s a negative asset
Yeah I feel for Kuminga a bit. They don’t want him but they want to gain by trading him, probably not contented with other teams offering seconds.
How does saying this out loud help the Warriors either? You’re just gonna get lowballed even more now?
At this point they know they aint getting shit. Hes shown nothing. Its an ego thing
Who’s ego are we talking about? Because they wont give him the opportunity cuz they think he’s ass but they also dont want to let him go for anything less than a boatload.
For the love of the game
At this point I genuinely have no fucking idea why they extended him.
To use as salary matching in a trade.
As an apron team, they can’t just use the equivalent 22M to sign a free agent.
And they also can only make trades where they get back equal or lower salary.
So the only way to get a different player worth ~20M is to resign Kuminga and use his salary as matching along with other things (such as picks) to sweeten the deal.
Seems like he’s making it harder on himself to make a trade tho, when he’s on public record saying that there’s zero demand on the market for the asset he’s trying to palm off
Picks would definitely help, but like, this definitely doesn’t lol
I mean, if teams were surprised to learn he has no market, then it would make it harder.
In reality, the league already knows he’s a distressed asset without frothy demand, or he’d already be traded. He’s signalling that they might not trade him despite the trade demand if there’s no offers, which does at least tell teams that they’re not feeling panicked or pressured into offloading him at all costs.
Yeah, but they’re doing a bad job at trading him. They should have shut those questions down before they got public, or given the boring answers - *Yeah, we’re in discussions”.
Just keep it vague and let another NBA disaster story take over. Advertising how bad the relationship is just lowers the offers.
Damn. He buried him more than prime Triple H
There’s no demand-uhhh for Jonathan-uhh Kuminguhh
Here’s the thing-uhh…in this business-uhh
Simon Gotch buries Enzo Amore type shit
YouTube recommendation Hall of Fame right there
spoken like someone who’s not paying kuminga 22m to get dnps
Bucks fans instinctively chiming in with a good FMD for old time’s sake.
FUCK MIKE DUNLEAVY
FMD!
Than…maybe you shouldn’t have signed him.
Wow, the rare “than” instead of “then”. It’s almost always the other way around.
The fumbling of Kuminga should be studied. Not super impactful in the grand history of the nba, but what a front office blunder.
There’s only one question that needs to be answered and it’s “what exactly did Lacob want and when”. Kuminga was always Lacob’s guy.
He’s not even good. What exactly did they fumble?
They signed a 46 million dollar deal to a guy they cant play and seemingly cant trade either
There’s only one winner here and that’s kuminga. I’m okay with that
literally had offers in the offseason for him and Warriors turned them all down
they don’t want him yet refused to trade him
I mean drafting a player decently high in the lottery, choosing to try to develop him without playing time for most of the first year or two and then transitioning into not playing him when healthy and not trading him for value in the first 5 years of his contract into paying him to continue to not play when healthy is a pretty big fumble, no?
Signing him to an extension.
It’s easy to laugh at this from the comfort of my couch, but this is actually insanely petty and a pretty bad business tactic when you think about it for a second
If they’re going to trade Kuminga, then you’re shooting yourself in the foot by taking petty potshots at him like this. All you’re doing by “humbling him” like this is lowering his trade value, which will then lower the return that you get for him
The Warriors are prioritizing their petty hatred of Kuminga over the long-term wellness of their franchise. That’s disgustingly incompetent and malicious
Out of curiosity why do the Warriors have a petty hatred of Kuminga in the first place? I’m out of the loop so I was wondering about the context behind it.
My guess is that he’s probably uncoachable and is not willing to buy into the Warriors philosophy of basketball. There are plenty of various compliation videos out there where he disrupts the flow of the Warriors offense. This leads to players like Draymond and Steph being disappointed if he’s not even willing to execute plays properly. From the sounds of it Kerr has given him plenty of chances and he’s not willing to improve as a player so you get this soured relationship between the Warriors and Kuminga now. The Warriors don’t even care if they keep tanking his trade value probably just to prove a point to Kuminga that if you’re not willing to be a good coworker for the org you’re in then why should they go to bat for him when he’s getting traded for a different team?
I also remember seeing other posts on here and videos that showcase the low BBIQ of Kuminga.
https://youtu.be/albkxmRLAxM
https://youtu.be/kmSTJ_lUTPU
This post also sums up on why Kuminga is not a good fit for the Warriors after all these years despite being very physically talented.
https://old.reddit.com/r/nbadiscussion/comments/1qhjq6p/about_jonathan_kuminga/
Another example https://old.reddit.com/r/nbadiscussion/comments/1qhjq6p/about_jonathan_kuminga/o0oh5sr/
And whose fault is that? They fucked this young dude over so bad. I’ll be cheering for him wherever he goes, hope he lights em up
LOL
Eh yo, why do they hate Kuminga soooo much?
In no particular order:
He’s actively refused to be coachable. They’ve asked him to become a better rebounder, not stop the ball, take better shots, and play within the structure of the offense. He showed he could actually do that to start the season, but then immediately started taking contested fadeaways with 10+ on the shot clock, barreling into people with no plan, and reverted to being a ball stopper. He did improve his rebounding to be fair.
He’s represented by an absolute clown in Aaron Turner. And that is who MDJ has had to deal with.
It’s all but confirmed he faked an injury on Jan 2, losing him his last remaining ally in the building in Lacob.
The organization knows they fucked up, and now Jimmy’s hurt and they have no real options other than bad ones. This issue though obviously isn’t JK’s fault.
These subreddit clowns won’t listen to this
Doesn’t mean they haven’t mismanaged this situation horribly regardless
Trade him for a big mac. If they’re lucky, they might get a whopper out of him
They overplayed their hand by pushing for a Bacon & Cheese whopper, the deal’s now dead.
Wasted a high pick when a handful of guys further down the board would’ve given them another window with the greatest shooter of all time but at least he gets to unload some zingers
Just ask for less lol
Nice self own.
genuinely, is he stupid?
I have never seen anyone tank a young players trade value the way Mike Dunleavy has
“My player has no demand” - The stupidest GM of all time
They spent a lot of time not liking or wanting to play this dude … so yeah.
That also means GS isn’t likely getting squat.
Always thought Dunleavy was a dweeb. Even as a player.
This is really unprofessional
Mike Dunleavy Jr is such a prick its no wonder they suck
The way the warriors have handled this is textbook sunk cost fallacy.
They spent a high FRP on Kuminga so they think they’re entitled to a getting back something close to that except they don’t even believe Kuminga is worth playing themselves.
Lol well if they haven’t somehow ruined his confidence before, this definitely the nail in the coffin
Jonathon Kumingas confidence is a problem, but not because it’s lacking
There would be demand if the coach played the damn guy. 13 guys were getting minutes the past 15 games while he couldn’t get a single minute of playing time. He averaged 21 ppg on 55% shooting and 42% from 3 in the semi conference playoffs against the Twolves last year. No way he should get zero playing time on a team that was playing .500 ball most of the year. Masterclass in coaching malpractice by Kerr
Nepo baby says what?
this has been going on for forever, just free the kum bucket
Genuinely don’t think they could’ve managed this arc any worse than they have
this is bs. Kuminga would net you expiring contracts at worst.
Players you could actually play on the court.
Send him to the Bulls for Williams, bruh
If incompetence was a person.
Godddddddamnnnnnnn
They didn’t have to do that at all
And it says a lot about their organization because as a GM for you to come out and say this about an obviously disgruntled player that you still signed is wild.
This would be a super baller quote if it weren’t for the fact that the Warriors need Kuminga to have demand so they can get trade him, and they played a large part in killing his demand by mismanaging him.
No there doesn’t. You can give him up for less than he’s worth. Teams want him, just not at the price you’re trying to trade him for.
This shit is why I hate Doc Rivers too
You don’t throw your players under the bus, whether or not they “deserve it”
In the position you’re in as a coach or GM it’s disgusting to do this
What is the purpose of a GM lashing out on a mid tier player who is benched
Bro choose to shit on his own asset to go viral
How the F did Mike Dunleavy Jr become the best candidate to replace Bob Myers.
Dunleavy was one of the most disliked players when he was on the team and the fans have little to no connection to him, so obviously it’s not like hiring a Warriors legend situation.
What does this franchise even want lmao
