[Nightengale] Carlos Beltran says no decision has been finalized but is expected to have a Mets’ cap on his Hall of Fame plaque.
It would be kinda funny if he wore an Astros hat đ
Why, did something happen with the Astros?
Iirc, he set the then record for most HRs in a single post season run. Thats definitely it though.
It was a very exciting postseason.
Also the NLDS that year was our first ever playoff series winâŚ.in our 43rd year of existence
I didn’t realize that. Pirates currently at 46 years since their last playoff series win.
It was 8 HRs that postseason right?
People forget 2002 Barry bonds mashed 8 HRs.
Beltran though did 8 HRs without even playing in the WS which is crazy.
Against ATL. MF single-handedly won that series.
Yeah he limped dicked his way into the Hall of Fame apparently
Beltran took the fall for the garbage can banging in the astros sign stealing cheating scandal. The league’s investigation claimed he was like the mastermind or something. It supposedly cost him the Mets manager job.
And your investigation concluded he was not?
Honestly I would respect that a lot as a sometimes-member of team chaos, but the HoF wouldn’t allow it.
It’ll be Mets or blank, probably Mets
Yeah like Wade Boggs wanted a Rays Cap in the hall of fame because his contract had that weird clause.
Rest in peace
My man could really throw back some beer.
I think Pujols had something like that in his contract with the Angels, that he has to go in the hall with an Angels cap when itâs said and done. But I think itâd be weird if itâs not a Cardinals cap
Wade Boggs denied that was ever a thing.
I think you can also pick your national team as well
He has a 7 bWAR lead on the next team FWIW (KC). Mets seem like an easy choice regardless, even if he did have great stops in STL, Houston (first time) and the Bronx.
Maddux was considered a no-doubter blank cap even though he had double the bWAR on the Braves vs the Cubs (66.2 v 33.7), he played 11 seasons with the Braves and 10 seasons in 2 stints with the Cubs bookending his Braves run
Beltran played 7 seasons with both the Royals and Mets. That’s why I consider it possible the HoF picks a blank cap
It’s possible, but he’s also been in and around the Mets org since retiring, so I doubt it
To be fair, that 2004 playoff run he had to the NLCS was ridiculous.

I was gutted when we didnât sign him after that season (I was still young and didnât know the Astros donât spend money).
I will die on this hill: if we had Beltran in 2005, we wouldâve won at least one game in the WS.
You think he already had the plan for cheating up his sleeve way back then?
He played for the Yankees for 3 years before coming back to Houston for his final season. Certainly couldn’t have learned it from anyone in that upstanding franchise.
Burden of proof is on the one making the claim.
I claim you shit your pants everyday and challenge you to disprove that.
Its just an observation, that the Yankees were known cheaters too as was Cora with BOS all around the same time. These guys seemingly wanted to spread these systems around the league, hence why several players claimed the whole league was doing something similar
Ofc I don’t have proof, I’m not a whistleblower or some shit, just noticed a trend
At the same time though, you canât choose a cap based on half a season. If he goes with any cap other than the Mets, it will be the Royals.
Yeah, and one strikeout right there at the end. (In his defense it was a really nice curveball).
I know you’ve probably blocked 2004 from your memory considering how little of a challenge your team put up at the end, but you’re talking about a completely different series.
Yes I am. Fuck.
Wrong season. 2004 was the Edmonds bomb year. 2006 was the curve.
Oooof wrong year
Heâs clearly gonna wear a cardinals hat câmon (he was insane in the 13â playoffs)
Did you post this forgetting about ‘06?…..Cause that’d be cruel
Donât wanna minimize that year, but I was too young to watch it live in 06 lol
My god the average age of a redditor seems to be decreasing by the day.
Was an animal that run
Was really rooting for the Cards that year specifically because of him. Just imagine if he had won, he likely retires and we never get the sign stealing scandal.
(Assuming he was the true mastermind and not just the fall guy)
Only if he stole it!
Not if Mike Pence has the courage!
well the HOF plaque is just a piece of metal, is it not
Actually, yes. For all the debate, the actual plaque room is hugely underwhelming and the sculpting is usually ugly and doesn’t really resemble the player. It’s pretty funny.
Texas Rangers legend Carlos Beltran
Honestly his short run with us the first time is probably the best stretch of his entire career but he should go in as a Royal or Met
He really should wear it
What a fucking joke that Beltran is getting in ahead of Bonds/Clemons/ARod. No consistency around cheating
And you can strangle your wife and get in, but if you’re mean to journalists and hurt their feelings they will whip out that character clause so fast it’ll make your head spin
I wish I could find who this was, but one voter was adamant that off-the-field stuff should never be considered, except that Schilling threatened journalists, and as a journalist, he couldnât support someone who advocated violence against him. Mind you, his argument was specifically not that Schilling asked people not to vote for him - he only cared about his comments against journalists.
Meanwhile, he had no problem voting for guys who beat women. But he wasnât a woman, so I guess it wasnât relevant.
And they want us to treat the Hall like it’s the ultimate career accomplishment in baseball. I just can’t care about it on that level with how arbitrary it all is. Great museum but I’m sick of the voting and its surrounding discourse.
“Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them… well, I have others,”
Ok I get what youâre saying but Barry Bonds has had several credible accusations of spousal abuse levied against him starting with his first wife, Susan âSunâ Bonds and Roger Clemens began an affair with Mindy McCready when she was 15. Iâm not saying they should or shouldnât be in the Hall but itâs pretty disingenuous to act like some of these guys only took roids and werenât always nice to the media. Thereâs more to it.
This speaks well for Aroldis Chapman.
To be fair, it is a massive headâŚ
Cheating in general has never been a problem for the HoF. Specifically steroids have been decided to be a problem for whatever reason.Â
Its really cause of the media shitstorm that the steroid scandal caused. But the HOF voters who are the media benefitted from the 98 HR chase, Bonds breaking records, and the scandal. Its such a joke.
MLB was making too much money to stop it in real time. The steroid era literally saved the game.
I was gonna say, there are many great, old pitchers who threw spitballs well after they were banned. It was the sticky stuff of their day and they’re all in.
Youâre wrong because there is a through line! If they like you, then all cheating is forgiven and forgotten, it seems!
looks at David Ortiz
Thank donât think Ortiz should be in the hall, but alas, he smiled at reportersÂ
Bonds and Clemens should obviously be in but I donât think itâs a joke to treat steroids and the Trashstros differently because theyâre not at all similar other than both being against the rules
Itâs a joke that Bonds and Clemens were blocked because of steroids when Bonds beat multiple women and Clemens groomed a girl.
Never knew about any of this. I just thought Bonds was an asshole and well he still is but he sucks too.
Bonds used to be an asshole. He still is, but he used to, too.
Also seems pretty clear IMO that Beltran fell on the sword as a retired player so MLB wouldn’t have to punish stars like Altuve, Bregman, and Correa. The word “mastermind” is getting thrown around a lot but we literally don’t know the actual role of the other players on the Astros roster in constructing the cheating scheme.
So, he agreed to fall on the sword and lose his shot at being an MLB manager? And then kept it secret?
He still has a job with the Mets. One that Iâm sure pays him well.
And?
Probably the wrong term here because I don’t think it was his choice, moreso MLB’s choice to make him the sacrificial lamb instead of bringing down the hammer on current players
Yeah and if you look at the batters outcomes from all the players who used the sign stealing over the full season, they didn’t really benefit that much. Steroids often made average players into elite players though.
Like Max Kepler
Dee gordan too
Mookie Betts sure did in 2018. Never came close to repeating thatÂ
I mean…there’s an absolutely massive gulf in on-field efficacy between sign stealing and PED use. You can draw the line in many places between those two violations.
The hall has been a complete joke for awhile now
Justice for Sholess Joe Jackson!
For the sake of devils advocate? Bonds, Clemens, and definitely A-Rod really saw no significant punishment for their cheating, apart from reputational damage, Beltran immediately lost a managing job when his cheating was revealed. A-Rod is a commentator and almost ended up owning the Mets, Clemens pitched until he was basically a part time starter, and Bonds was slapped with an asterisk.
Let’s not pretend baseball has ever been consistent though, “gambling has no place in the baseball, we can’t believe someone would do this!” (brought to you by BetMGM, DraftKings, and FanDuel)
ARod was suspended for an entire season, what are you talking about?Â
He was at his peak with the Mets, plus he now has a good relationship with the organization
They should keep his bat on his shoulder on his plaqueÂ
Even as a Mets fan this is a pretty good bit, not sure why youâre getting downvoted to hell.
Yeah, all those downvotes seem pretty unfair for a really solid joke.
That was the moment 9 year old me realized life isnât fair and it isnât a Disney movie. I have never forgiven Beltran for stripping me of my innocence and childhood glee. It wouldâve been 101% different if he swung and missed cause it was a nasty pitch.
So sad he didn’t stay with the Royals. They had such a good young core at the time with Beltran, Damon, Dye, and Sweeney, but ownership fucked it up. The Royals tried to offer him $1 million a year less than what he asked for…which offended him so he left.
Put him in a Rangers cap and Andruw in a Dodgers cap đ
Jones’ bWAR by team:
I hope everyone understands why we specifically hate the guy.
World’s smallest violin…
My heart weeps for thee
Negative WAR earned for the Dodgers counts as double positive WAR as far as Iâm concerned
Double Plus Good
đťđ¤
Boo fucking hoo
He fucking scammed us
Oh no! Hopefully something good happened to the Dodgers in the two decades to follow.
One day I’ll feel complete.
YeahâŚwe got scammed by Tanner Fucking Scott
Put both of them in Yankee caps!
The Yankees social media posts for both guys today was hilarious. Just congrats and basically nothing else bc they didnât do shit here
The Yankees and getting players they desperately tried to acquire during their primes at the tail-end of their careers - name a more iconic duoâŚ.
Because of when he hurt me, I always think of him as a Ranger (also because Iâm AL focused)
Funny how the two inductees most famous postseason moments are respectively: Andruw drawing a bases loaded walk to keep the mets from going the world series, and Beltran striking out with the bases loaded to keep the mets from going to the world series
Yes itâs very funnyÂ
Weâre all laughing
That is not at all Beltrans most famous post season moment. His 2004 run with Houston still is
Him hosing Mark Ellis at the plate in the 10th inning of game 1 of the NLCS in 2013 is my favorite but it’s definitely not the most famous.
Mmm no, my favorite is definitely still him striking out against Waino to send us to the World Series
Andruw Jones is the only teenager to homer in a world series
And then he did it again his next at batÂ
Youngest player to homer in the postseason period! And only other teenager to homer in any postseason game was Bryce Harper in his rookie year, three days shy of his 20th birthday.
Why would he not have a Mets cap? That would be insane if he elected for a Cards cap, lol
He had a RoY and a strong start to his career with the Royals. It’d probably be either Mets or blank due to that. I think Beltran does have a preference for a Mets cap though
Kinda crazy in retrospect how dog shit those Royals teams were with a Damon/Beltran/Dye outfield
And Mike Sweeney at first.
Sweeney/Damon/Dye combined for 14.7 bWAR in 2000. Their entire pitching staff combined for 6.4.
Yeah our lineup wasn’t the problem. Its that we had literally the worst rotation, bullpen and bench. We could score runs. But were literally absolute dog shit at every other aspect of the game.
I forgot how good Sweeney was man. He hit like Freddie Freeman for about 7 years there.
Reddit is too young to remember Beltran as a Royal
I’m old enough to remember him as a Wilmington Blue Rock.
He feels like a good case for blank to me. Had good seasons on a bunch of teams.
Just checked and its actually pretty crazy how similar his stats are between Royals and Mets, 1 more AB and 20 more Hits with KC, 25 more HRs with NY, lots of very close numbers, but only 1 AS with KC, but 5 AS in NY along with 2 SS and 3 GG.
I wonder if the rewards were simply a case of he didnt get as much credit because he played in a central team that only had a winning record 1 season that he was there
The 2004 postseason made him famous and those honors tend to follow fame. He was a good young player in KC, just playing for some bad, obscure teams.
Uh cuz heâs a giants legend come on with these silly questions
Because he’s the platonic ideal of a blank cap guy
lol I associate him most with the royals, astros, and cardinals. I forgot he even played for the Mets.
[deleted]
He still works for us
â06
Edit - This is not a reflection on my personal views of Beltran going down looking on the most ridiculous curveball ever. I donât have any views. I wasnât even born yet. I just know that a lot of Met fans arenât over Beltranâs frozen pizza
No one with a brain thinks this nor is that why he wouldnât get a Mets capÂ
Werenât even born yet wtf
You guys need to let that go.
I cried myself to sleep that night as a child lol. No hatred for the cardinals but I thought we were winning it all that year
For his undefeated stint as the Mets manager, right?
More games with Mets than any other team. Best season (per bWAR) and highest MVP finish with Mets.
Not rocket science.
More hits with the Royals.
More triples too.
More ROTYs too.
More runs, home runs, doubles, RBI, walks, less strikeouts, better OBP, OPS, better fielding %, etc etc with the Mets. He was more of a complete player by then
More playoff games too, 10 with the Mets vs 0 for the Royals.
Maybe he could borrow this one?
Should wear an asterisk cap
Make it a trash can
Put him popping out of a trash can like Oscar the Grouch
So Royals or blank cap then?
No KC love :(
I say he goes in as a Royal and they retire his number, just for the novelty of the Royals having retired 5, 10, 15 and 20
I get it. I understand it. But itâs still disappointing.
He played the most games as a Met, had by far his most career WAR as a Met, made five all star games as a Met compared to one as a Royal (where he wore an Astros cap), won all of his gold glove and silver slugger awards as a MetâŚ
I mean, he played 7 seasons with both, and has 31 vs 25 bWAR. Maddux went in with no hat despite having twice as much WAR with Atlanta as Chicago.
Is this a joke? Because this has been clearly disproven.
https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/boggs-wade
Wade Boggs is rolling in his grave
Same thing with Gary Carter going in as an Expo
No they don’t, Roy Halladay said he wanted in as a Blue Jay but they blank hatted him.Â
how is that not exactly what they were saying
He played most of his career there and the hall didn’t care.Â
Aw, câmon, CarlosâŚ
damn I really thought it would be the giants
Itâs a real middle finger to the city of San Francisco.
the wheeler trade should have included the right to the hat he wears at cooperstown
put him in a trash can like Oscar the grouch
The man wants to manage the Mets. He very well may eventually.
Hey Boob what hat would you give Vizquel you friggin dork
Wait I take back my vote.
He knows what he needs to do.
Da royals or da Mets
Just go full Team Chaos and go in as a Giant
I keep forgetting they don’t let them pick the team hat anymore.
They donât pick but they are asked their opinion.
Both go in as Yankees for the chaos.
Considering the way the fans treated him sometimes, I think we’ll be lucky if he wears a Mets hat in the hall.
I think the Mets have a strong chance of being represented. Their social media pages have already made multiple post while the Royals and Astros each have 1. Most importantly, he still has strong ties to the Mets, being a part of their front office right now.
But a blank cap wouldnât surprise me. Iâm sure he thinks fondly of his Royals days, whom he spent almost the same amount of time as with the Mets. Then his most significant moments came in an Astros uniform.
So much for my Beltran jersey
He’s gonna wear a Yankees cap obviously. His dream team.
The only acceptable thing would be a trash can on his hat
they should put a garbage can next to it
Just as long as there’s a trash can near the exhibit
Terms are he has to wear an Astros hat tho.
If Beltran’s hit vs Johan did count, would Mets fans still remember him fondly? Besides not swinging on game 7.
âŚexpected to have an cough asterisks cough on his hat
He should do it in a Cardinals because that’s where his WS came from.
Wrong.
He has a shockingly good relationship with them these days, probably because the Wilpons are off in a hyperbaric chamber somewhere.
