Druw was the BEST defensive center fielder of all time. During his career, the only players with a higher WAR than him were A-Rod and Bonds (HOFers in my book). He also saved over 230 runs, which is 50 runs higher than Willy Mays.
You can hate his stretch in LA, his arrest wasn’t great (he still married to his wife). But “Very Good” isn’t how you describe Druw’s play in CF.

But I guess that sorta thing only matters for some players.
There’s room for one more accomplishment on the bottom of Beltran’s list 😉
Pointing out Beltran’s involvement in a WS scandal, especially as it pertains to his HOF candidacy, is not an unserious conversation
I think the conversation voters were having is individual cheating (steroids/peds) vs team cheating (live video sign stealing). Since he was never linked to a steroid scandal that probably made voting for him more acceptable in his voters eyes since his career accolades came before the trash cans. There’s probably more nuance to their decision than just that argument, but seems like that might have played a factor.

Yes, you are. He was a better person but a worse ball player.
I’ve given up trying to understand why he didn’t get in.
A baseball player that’s above replacement level for only ten years better be amazing in those ten years, and Murphy fell like 15-20 WAR short of the necessary excellence.

As a staunch proponent of “just put in everyone, and note the one’s that were assholes”… I get it. At some point, you want to have a cut-off and not be rewarding shitheads with the biggest honor in the sport.
But man, as someone who has adored baseball, and its history, and the Hall of Fame since I was a kid… this sucks. Like… there’s no standard for the Hall of Fame. No amount of “no cheaters” or “no shitheads” matters.
Literally the entire class is an open cheater (who led the biggest scandal since the Black Sox), a steroids user, and a guy who choked his wife and threatened to kill her. I have no clue how you possibly argue for these guys, but then try to look down your nose at keeping out anyone else with cheating or off-field concerns. It’s just hypocritical.
If the goal is to stop celebrating shitheads, go remove a bunch of busts of all the racists and sexists and cheaters already enshrined. They’re dead. It won’t hurt anyone.
But in the end, it’s not about the “sanctity of the game” or not celebrating cheaters or not celebrating people who were assholes in life. None of that actually matters to voters, it’s just lip service. It’s about arbitrarily picking the guys that a handful of curmudgeonly, self-aggrandizing writers think weren’t mean to them.
