AD doesn’t mean “after” though. It’s Anno Domini, or “the year of our lord.” So “AD 1” means “year 1 of our lord.” It does make sense, it just doesn’t use 0.

I mean, in case you’re serious, it’s because WAR is context-independent. It’s meant to judge people’s performance in a neutral game state—how valuable is a dropped pop fly to this location on average? It’s bad, but in most scenarios it doesn’t cost you the game.

WPA, on the other hand, calculates how a player’s contributions impacted that particular game given game state. And I’m willing to bet this play is worth vanishingly close to -1.0 WPA.

Luis Castillo can make history this year. If in 2026 he posts at least 1.1 WAR, he will become the all-time leader WAR in the 21st-century (for people named Luis Castillo)! If [highest WAR] = best, this could mean he is the century’s Best Player (with his name)!!
