I’ve realised I’ve still got 6 months left on my ESTA visa and, as a Celtics fan from the UK, I’ve decided I’d quite like to fly out to the US and go to my first game at TD Garden, probably in March.

Before I look at booking accommodation etc, I was wondering if you TD Garden veterans have any tips or advice for the experience? Anything you wish you knew before your first game?

Get loud, wear green, eat before you go, and have a plan for transportation. Place gets a little wild out there.

Drink before you go too! If you want to be tipsy and loud during the game, get started somewhere else because the beer in there is PRICY

Couple of things:

I prefer walking to the Garden over taking the metro. The trains get super packed around gametime and at game end, and you can be a while waiting to get out of there.
Don’t bring any bags to the arena, you will have to pay to check them.
Food and drink is expensive in the Garden, my usual go to is to eat prior to game time. There’s a bunch of great dining options in the area.
Be sure to arrive early to catch shoot around down on the court. If you have Loge tickets, you can normally walk down to the front to get a better look at everything.
You mentioned flying into Boston, the metro is your friend for getting around the city from there.

In terms of the trains being taken, if it’s the Green Line it’s a shit show. Orange Line is actually not as bad as it used to be. Had to take that for work daily and once they replaced the trains I fortunately never had much of an issue. Green Line and Red Line were the bane of any commuting I had to do during my time living around there.

I see a lot of visiting TD garden fans stay at the Holiday Inn in East Somerville on Washington Ave. Can’t speak to quality of hotel.

get there an hour before tip off so you can watch shoot around, eat beforehand as options are expensive inside the arena. you can walk to the Italian section known as the North End for a great meal or you can eat at the Food Hall at the entrance of the Garden. there is a great small plates restaurant on the side of the Garden, a little wharf on the water, called Alcove and there is a brewery next to that, the wharf is called Lovejoy Wharf, very pretty spot and away from the chaos surrounding the Garden. you can stop into the legendary dive bar, Sullivan’s Tap for a beer beforehand too. have fun, it’s always a good time at the Garden.

CitizenM, it’s not the biggest room but it’s reasonably priced and you can walk to and from the arena. If you want save a few more bucks look at Somerville and Charlestown. You can take the subway a few stops right to the arena. The Garden is a great venue for views, even the 300s are solid. It’s terrible for food, eat before the game
