Nobody in the east is close to the pistons. The only chance I can see is the knicks but those chances are getting slimmer and slimmer each day as they get blown out by teams like the mavs and kings. Somethings wrong internally with the knicks, the celtics have laughable talent outside of jaylen brown, the raptors are not a serious team, the sixers, cavs, and heat are all way too inconsistent to beat the pistons. The finals are pretty much set at this point it’s thunder vs pistons. Unless something crazy happens at the deadline the current 1 seeds are just miles better than the field.

One game during that record losing streak a couple years back they took the Celtics right down to the wire but it still counted as another L. I feel like there were several times I watched them that year nearly take down great teams but end up losing. Now they got it going on to finish games and contend in the east hellyeah

There were several games during the Pistons infamous season that came to the wire like that. They wanted to win bad and we could see the frustration about it, no question.

It was worse when the streak went on and it was clear that opponents did not want to be THAT team who ended the streak. I think Kyle Kuzma made a comment about that.

Kind of weird to say but I think Detroit probably has the top seed secured. Their season series with the Celtics is over and they have a handful of games remaining with the Knicks.

I think both the Celtics and Knicks would have to go on an incredible run at some point in the second half of the season to be a threat. Assuming nothing catastrophic happens with the Pistons of course.

At this rate with some napkin math, the Pistons could win around half of their remaining games and the Celtics/Knicks would have to win at a .550+ clip at a minimum. Probably .600+ for the Knicks.

And that would be a worst case scenario IMO.

If the Pistons hover around .600 then the Celtics and Knicks would have to win at a .700+ clip. I can’t rule out that possibility, but it’s probably unlikely.

I think Tatum’s return is the x factor. Tatum at 80% off his impact off the bench for 15 minutes a game is instantly winning us a lot of these close ones that we’ve dropped, IMO. But that all depends on his recovery and how well he’s able to integrate back into lineup, and it also assumes there isn’t any friction between him and Brown.

The Pistons have a bit of space now because the Celtics and Knicks already played some of these teams and lost 1 or both. Detroit’s got a little bit of work to do before we talk about clinching the east. If they go 0.500 vs the west contenders, they could still lose the 5 game advantage quite easily.

They fixed the bench, Ausar regressed, Duncan is a worse defender compared to Beasley, Duren is leaping in points.

Playoffs are always a different animal. We all know Cade will show up, the question is will the other guys show up too.

I disagree on Duncan vs Beasley defensively. Duncan is not athletic enough to stay in front of most guys, but he is a smart team defender and knows what he is supposed to do. Beasley was completely apathetic to the concept of defense at times.

They have some very real and exploitable weaknesses, especially on offense, but I do think this team is better. They have a few different looks to throw out at people (Stew+Duren, Holland+Ausar+Reed/Stew) that could create matchup issues as well.

He’s not looking to score when Harris or even other starters miss time. Like I distinctly remember Pistons fans complaining that Cade has to do everything again this season.

While his 3PT% is up, his FG% and FT% are down too.

Yea that wasn’t a playoff team last year. They’ll have trouble scoring again this year and will surely miss Schroeder who played extremely well in his role. Ausar has gotten better on defense and fouls less. Improvement there. He hasn’t regressed on offense. He was a dunker spot/roam the baseline and facilitate around the paint guy. That’s still his strength but this season he’s a ball handler every game for development. He’s legit awful. Their org said they are way more interested in development this season than seeding.

I think a big difference maker for them is just the intensity they play with that not many of their opponents can match in a regular season game. That’s not as much of a factor in the playoffs though.
