I’m not sure if he’s considered a big man anymore but I’ve always been intrigued Precious Achiuwa’s skill set. I don’t think he’s a smart player necessarily but after seeing Joe coach these young wings and also Simons, I would love to see Precious go through “Celtics University” and see what comes out.

Adam Silver came onto an NBCSB telecast a few seasons back - I think it was either in the 2024 or 2023 seasons - and asked that the commentators talk about the actual game more.

Commentators consistently explaining things like a 45 cut or a pistol or punch action or a Spain PNR would be really helpful to fans and help wean them off this constant drama hunting that became prevalent in the Lebron era.

ESPN leaned too heavily on that rubbish and now kids talk about dumb things like someone’s bag and where free agent X might be headed or where Superstar G might be demanding to be traded to instead of: “oh, why did they run an iso in that last play instead of ‘Winner’?” When I see NFL commentary, it’s almost always people talking about how the wrong plays or actions were run.

The NBA game is actually really good and enjoyable these days if you know what to watch for. It’s just that there’s too much commentary about the negative or how things are different from the Larry Bird era or the deadball era (lol) that isn’t helping.

We need more Tim Legler and less Ramona Shelburne in NBA discourse.

I thought it was great commentary too. You had 2 experts of each team explaining what the each team was doing and what they were good at. Like yea, you got moments where you got a little taste of each commentators homerism, but it added to the experience and didn’t take away.

One little gripe is more an issue with NBA commentary in general and not this specific broadcast, but i think they need to stop and take more time analyzing more plays. It’s probably incredibly hard to do and some of it probably comes from just having watched a couple of recorded NFL games, but it sometimes seems like the commentary could slow down, even if the game doesn’t. It’s a lot easier to do in football because you have plenty of time between plays, but it’d be nice to have more of that.

I agree Cade had a terrible shooting night but I thought he could get to wherever he wanted on the floor and if Detroit had better offensive players, he would have had like 20+ assists and would actually have room to drive to the paint. Dude is the real deal.

I think people have it in their heads that a good ATO = wide open layup. But the reality is that you can’t design a wide open layup - that only happens if the defense fucks up their coverage.

When there’s more time on the clock most of our ATO sets do have an action where if the defense messes up the read we get a free layup, but then the main play is something more controllable (either a catch and shoot three off a screen or forcing a mismatch).

With four seconds you don’t have time to see if the defense will fuck up so you need to just go straight into the controllable option. We did that and got Jaylen brown one on one, with no help defense, going to his strong hand in the paint. That is a 40-50% shot which is as good as it gets against a defense that isn’t giving you free points.

Nah nobody should be mad at that at all, im actually pissed at anyone getting mad at that because for YEARS Joe has been drawing up overly complicated or non sensical ATOs that never worked

Finally, he just draws up a simple fucking pindown that gets his best player the ball against a favorable matchup in iso, and he got a great look. I will live with the shot we got every day of the week and it should be encouraged because that’s genuinely one of the only good ATOs at the end of games I’ve seen Joe draw up

I think the game was lost ultimately on that run to close the 1st half where Joe went small with both Neemy and Garza in foul trouble

Al taking a below-market deal was essential for building our championship. He was also the starting center on our championship team. That was two years ago.

It’s funny that the Pistons gave a Duren the ball early in each half and he turned and flashed some slick drives for layups. Compare that to the Kendrick Perkins memorial post up for an ugly jump hook. The game done changed.

That said, Duren’s buckets were loud, but I kinda think Stewart is just flat out better than him. Duren slowed down after the first quarter burst and committed so many dumb fouls. I thought Queta acquitted himself quite well, after giving up those layups to start both halves and the two first quarter turnovers. ⁸⁄₁₀ from the free throw line was nice too

But in the grand scheme, coaching is mostly about managing Jays and Hugos, not Xs and Os. And Mazzula manages players (and sets performance expectations) better than anyone in the League.

I’d like to have won that game on a brilliant ATO Brad drew up but I don’t want Brad coaching the other 99.9% of the time: we, and he, knows how that ends.

Jaden Ivey’s brief hot streak sorta decided the game, well before the final shot. Ivey, spelling Cade, made something positive happen on several consecutive possessions and the Pistons won by one.

JT simply raising the floor of non-Jaylen minutes would’ve been more than enough to win last night. Replace Simons’s “contributions” with pedestrian JT and the Celtics are +5? +10?

JT doesn’t have to be “vintage JT” to make a massive difference for this team. He just needs to be more impactful than Jaden Ivey for 10 minutes per game.

Seems like the leash is longer for Baylor for whatever fucking reason.

The Celtics might feel not clutch because the losses hurt more, but they certainly have games on the other side of what happened tonight. It just doesn’t happen every night because they’ve been blowing teams out. Since Dec 1, their single digit wins have been against the Knicks (6), Raptors (8), Pacers (8), Raptors (8), Heat (5)

All their losses since Dec 1 have been single digits except that bizarre Bucks game where Portis and Kuzma couldn’t miss. Celtics only have 4 double digit losses on the season, so pretty much every game they wind up losing is close

Game winners are rare man. We’ve struggled in the clutch a bit this year but we won against Miami just a couple days ago. And we’ve had wins down to the wire plentifully in the last couple years. I mean, Porzingis return (for the tenth time) to NYC, Whites game winner over Miami, OT vs Lakers a couple years back - just to name a few in the Jays era
