This isn’t a post with any legs behind in terms of sources…but I’ve been seeing a whole lot of trade buzz across the league, and nothing has been really substantiated or loud regarding the Celtics.

A majority of the Celtics “rumors” have been names we’ve heard before, names we “would” have interest in, and the ongoing theme of trading Simons. Nothing concrete and nothing we didn’t hear in the offseason or the previous trade deadline. Much of the same being regurgitated.

I can see a scenario where we stay quiet. If a reliable big becomes available at a good price, you make the deal…but I think we’re going to hold a roster spot and make a buyout pickup. It’s the easiest way to add to your postseason hopes without giving up assets.

Anyone have some names that they think are legitimate buyout candidates?

Last year we saw guys like Mo Bamba, Ben Simmons, Christian Wood, Josh Richardson bought out. Torrey Craig came here last year after a buyout.

I feel like we got him just a bit too late, I wish we had picked him up a few years prior.

He also barely played in the playoffs ao it was kind of a forgettable pick up. I was hyped about it though.

Depends on what their contract was before the buyout in terms of what we can offer. It’ll be case by case, but anyone can say yes to the prorated minimum.

Someone can fact check me on this, but I think we saved our taxpayer MLE (5.7 million)

Tbh the buyout market in the past few years have not really been impactful to contenders. I can’t even name a veteran player in last 5 yrs have been impactful to a contending team. Maybe Jeff Teague on the Bucks or Blake on the Nets? But this was back in 2021 lol

There’s a reason why most teams will prefer to buyout these players. Remember when guys like Will Barton and Terence Ross got waived lol. This sub was pretty bummed when they chose the Suns and the Raptors over us but they were pretty much ass when they played in their new teams

We can only bring in guys that make less than the Full MLE
Then you have to exclude players that are on multi year deals, (teams don’t like dead cap space)
Then you have to exclude players on teams that are play-in or better, (they likely aren’t trying to lose talent for nothing)

After that, it’s hard to find good bigs in the buy-out market. The best you could hope for are probably Marvin Bagley III or Precious Achiuwa. However, they only make the minimum, so I’m not sure what the appetite would be for their teams to buy them out.

I’m not against it, it’s just hard to predict what talents would be available. Maybe the Blazers trade Timelord for talent and the team they trade him to buys him out? Wishful thinking, but that’s mostly what the buy-out market is in reality

My dream is Timelord or Horford getting bought out. Timelord for obvious reasons. I think Horford thought he was going somewhere he could contribute to a playoff run, but the Warriors are a play-in team and we clearly have better title odds even this year. Maybe he’d want to get bought out and come home
