A lot of people see the ppg and the flashy plays (which are admittedly awesome) and get sort of an innacurate idea on where this dude is right now.

He has a lot of flashes and a lot of talent that is unquestionably some of the best in the league at ability to get to the rim etc.

But he’s still got a ways to go, this stretch without a point guard for two months has helped him a lot as a secondary ball handler, and hes jumping passing lanes for steals way more effectively than ever before.

But he’s still got a ways to go until he’s consistently an efficient scorer in this league. Still being 22 is a plus.

People’s eyes don’t lie to them. Most people who have watched Shaedon by now, know that his ceiling is uniquely high.

He just came into the league having minimal high school experience even, with COVID happening his junior season. Then he didn’t even play his senior season, graduated early and went to Kentucky then didn’t play for them and went straight into the draft. Then got hurt a few minutes into his first summer league game. Then looked surprisingly good as a rookie. Then missed most of his second season with an injury.

You could make a whole list of excuses for reasons why any player might be slow to develop. But I think the fact that he has developed each season, despite those things, should tell you a lot about how good he’s going to end up being. He’s averaging his age in points.

I would be really really surprised if he never became an all star. And I think his potential is even higher than that.

Uniquely high? Maybe lol. He can’t shoot, can’t pass, and can’t/won’t defend. Getting to the rim due to absurd athleticism can only get you so far in the modern NBA—and the decline is usually precipitous. Unless his two takes a huge leap and he becomes Kobe, there just isn’t a ton of historical precedent for a guy coming in with nothing but hops developing the skill set needed to be an all-star. His ceiling is probably inefficient chucker on a bad team, and Portland should be projecting the most likely outcome and just double down on building around Deni while we’re still young and have assets to play with.

Pretty disingenuous to say he can’t shoot when he’s shooting over 40% from 3. He just needs better shot selection and to get to the free throw line more. His defense needs improvement along with better decision making. Things that can get better with more experience.

Saying he can’t shoot, pass or defend is just such a lazy and idiotic statement. He can do all of those things, just has some room for improvement in them, which he has shown literally every season (besides shooting due to his attempt difficulty skyrocketing as well as an injury this season).

Dyson Daniels can’t shoot. Amen Thompson can’t shoot. Sharpe’s stroke is buttery as fuck. Dude has had to generate some pretty difficult looks this season with some of the personal he’s had out with him out there.

He didn’t come in with “nothing but hops”. If you watched his HS film you’d he had a deep bag akin to Paul George. Again I don’t know why you’re just lying/making stuff up to argue for him failing. Remove your flair.

He’s literally already an “inefficient chucker on a decent, possibly good, team”. So he’s already better than you apparently think he’ll ever be. Do you also think he’s done improving at age 22?

Shot selection is one of the bigger things he still needs to work on imo.

He has a pretty jumper, has the stebpack moves down, and can get to the rim at will. But he’s still inefficient because he’s forcing things.

Eye test says he gets a bit better each year at that, but I wont say he’s fully improved until he turns the corner into “more efficient than average” rather than below.

I’m really surprised he got paid in the offseason - I imagine other shooting guards like Mathurin and Ivey were looking for Sharpe’s contract to be the baseline, but based on Sharpe’s TS% alone I see the hesitancy.

Score-first shooting guards are getting devalued in today’s CBA - is it worth throwing a lot of money at 2-guards that can’t be expected to either run your offense or defend your opponent’s best perimeter guy?

I’m really glad he got paid what he did in the offseason.

An AAV of $22.5 mil in todays NBA is relatively small. And he’s 22, he’s younger than someone like Kuminga and Mathurin and got a smaller deal than even someone like a Kuminga.

He’s improved on some small things this season but the efficiency is still overall not good (He’s been better lately after a horrendous start but still).

I’m 100% happy with the move to see if he can improve his 3pt% consistently, get to the line more, and continue improving as a defender. And if it doesn’t work out, it was a great gamble on a young talented player.

He was shooting 25% from 3 early on in the season. He’s been shooting 40% over the last 20 games.

The TS will come around as long as he stays efficient for the rest of the season.
