Mike Conley now ranks 25th on the NBA’s all-time assists leaderboard, passing Muggsy Bogues (6,726)
Still can’t believe muggsy was 4 foot 6 and played 10+ years in the league
Still can’t believe mugsy was 3 foot 4 and played 20+ years in the league
Still can’t believe musy was 2 foot 8 and played 30+ years in the league
Still can’t believe muy was 1 foot 3 and played 40+ years in the league
Still can’t believe Mugs was literally discovered by the CERN particle accelerator and played long enough to transcend time itself
Mugsys all the way down
Russell Westbrook would need to play 8-10 years until age 46 to beat John Stockton’s record. Lebron would need almost 7 seasons until age 47 or 48 at his current production.
That record is safe for a long long time. Trae Young is probably the most likely if he was able to focus on becoming a pass first, higher efficiency scorer but it would still take him around 12-14 years until he was age 39-41 or so at a top level assist production.
That and generous scorekeepers.
That’s the most overblown thing in a very very long time.
The gaps between home and away stats back then were more or less the same as modern players. If you look at Jordan’s assists in the year the Bulls were accused of padding his defensive stats, he actually had more assists in road games that year. The reality is that stat tracking was just less reliable back then. The idea that there would be significant sway across the league is absurd
That’s true. There was a detailed post about Stockton’s assists at home versus the road posted here a couple years ago. The 10% difference home/away split is well within reason.
Sometimes we get good content here.
I don’t think anyone really comes after Jordan’s assist numbers? It’s his DPOY year where there were games he had more steals than the other teams had turnovers that people take issue with.
Right but the person who responded to my comment went after Stocktons assist numbers.
Also, a score keeper can fudge assist numbers way way more than steals since there are many plays where an attacking player goes to far for it to be technically an assist.
And thats why I said the score keeping just wasnt reliable back then which was the main issue. Not some weird conspiracy to give Jordan more steals
Yes, a 10% differential couldn’t possibly be the result of playing at home versus playing away. It’s surely not in line with other stars of the era. No, this plainly can be nothing other than malfeasance!
If Russ played with KD his whole career he might’ve finished 1-2 spots below Stockton. No way of beating Stockton without 2 MVPs playing 20 years together.
The question is, does Russ pass Kidd to take 4th?
Probably depends how much longer Russ is a starter.
Also Kidd will probably end up 5th behind Lebron.
When LeBron passes he’ll drop to 4th. He’d have to be passed by Russ to finish 5th.
If I had to bet on it though I say Russ falls short in the 11.5k range. I’m not sure I see him playing many years as anything less than a 6th man.
Ah, you were already accounting for Kidd dropping below Lebron. Read it wrong.
He is having a good season in Sacramento and is showing better team basketball skills and higher efficiency. He is likely buying himself at least another year if not one or 2 more years in the league
At this rate he would need to play this season and 3 more giving 7 assist per game in 75 games per season.
Its possible but very difficult
Personally my fever dream is to see Haliburton break the record
Hall of Very Good
In nba terms thats hall of fame
Nah most other leagues, Conley is quite simply “hall of good”
This is a joke about the nba hall of fame.
My GOAT
Curry is 40 assists behind him and averaging 2 more per game than Conley this season. There’s a decent chance Conley gets knocked back out of the top 25 later this year.
He would likely pass Deron Williams before Curry catches up to him. Conley is only 89 assists away from taking 24th place.
and by the end of the season he’d likely be right back anyway
Lowry at 19 is surprising but also really impressive
Stockton assist record might be the most unbreakable of all the career records. He’s almost 30% better than 2nd place.
All time rebounds is way more unbreakable. Duncan is the closest a “modern” player has gotten at 6th with 15,091 and he is 8,833 behind Wilt
https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/trb_career.html
So if Lebron is at the midway point of his career right now and continues to produce at his career average for the rest of his “career”, he still wouldn’t catch Wilt.
You’re right, i am so accustom to mentally excluding Wilt when talking about records.
LeBron most likely finishing his career 3rd place in all time assists, while having an impossible to reach all time points record is insane. He’ll also be top 25 in rebounds, and top 6 in steals when he retires. Just an absolute crazy level of production at all levels of the game.
If Westbrook keeps taking care of himself and does not go to contender teams, I see him in the top 4 or even top 3
He got good assist numbers on the Nuggets, especially when Mal or AG was out. He can definitely facilitate assists on a contending team, even if he comes off the bench
But he has so many flaws as a player, plus being older, to be a net on a contender. Hole on defense. Bad IQ. No shooting…
Agree to disagree.
Oh, I just peeped the flair 😂😂
You can’t get 11k assists with bad IQ BTW
He has a lot of talents but out of all the mega stars the NBA has had, tell me 1 player with worse IQ than him
Define basketball IQ
What do you mean when you say he has low IQ?
This end of game sequence against the Wolves is probably the sort of thing people think of
All time greats make mistakes all the time. This is only focused on because it’s Russ.
CP3 is considered a high IQ player and he made the same mistake when facing Russ in OKC’s historical comeback vs the Clippers
CP3 did this in the playoffs, whereas Russ did it in a regular season game.
I’ve never seen anyone claim CP3 had low IQ for this. You only remember the mistakes and not when he’s cooking.
His IQ gave Aaron Gordon the Game Winning assist vs OKC last year
So first, you know what IQ is but telling me that you cannot get x numbers with low IQ.
Then, when I make you a concrete question, you ask me to define IQ.
IQ is decision making. When to shoot or involve your teammates. How to defend x possession. How to place yourself on the court on offense on defense to avoid rival easy points. How to read the pace of the game. How to read your opponent, who’s defending you. Don’t fall for provocations of shooting 3s when the opponent is daring you to do it. Play to win, not to have fun.
There’s a lot more I could say.
Russ is the definition of a supertalented player and an amazing athlete with SUPER LOW IQ.
You cannot tell me Jason Kidd, Payton, Stockton Isiah Thomas, Chris Paul (his fellow point guards) had lower IQ than him. Not one top player has lower IQ than Russ. Not even Melo.
Russ has 1 year after this at best in the league. He will be 5th all time
That’s my GOAT
It’s a shame that grit n grind team all couldn’t have ended their careers in Memphis.
The one day contract he signs with Memphis will be a special day.
Mugsy doing that at his height, and being in the league for so long, might be one of the most impressive things any player has done in the nba.
Andre Miller having more assists than Rondo is surprising to say the least, underrated facilitator for sure
rondo had a lot of fake assists attributed but andre miller is like top 20 in games played so not very surprising
JKidd was a PROBLEM
Didn’t realize he was even still playing
WCF’s two years in a row as the starting pg for the wolves
And that’s where he’ll finish
Chart says he needs 89 more to move into 24th place.
Nope, 88 more will get him to 24th, tied with D. Williams, but Conley would STILL be in 24th place too with 88 more.
I mean, if CP3 somehow played a lot longer and retired with 15,806 assists, he’d be tied with Stockton in 1st place all time.
No one would say either was in 2nd place, but in 1st place. Being tied with another or more than one at any level doesn’t lower them.
Conley only needs 88 more assists to move into 24th place. He won’t be in 24th place alone, but he’ll still be in 24th place with 88 more.
Before Steph Curry, John Stockton was my favorite player of all time.
Why did I think he retired after last year lol
