What are you talking about? I watched him play all last season. He was a tolerable shooter. He shot 34% on 3.1 three point attempts game. The big changes this season are (1) no trae young so more on ball responsibilities, (2) a hand injury early in the year.

He was a 31-33% shooter the prior years. Working his way out would be reverting to that low 30’s mean. That’s not stellar shooting, but it is achievable and better than 11%.

He does not have to be good or above average, tolerable suffices for this team given his size at 6’8, his defensive prowess, and the sheer number of shooters on this team (every big can shoot 3’s at 35-38% clip). His numbers do suggest he is capable of that. There is also a clear catalyst for this drop in shooting, his hand injury.

Tolerable is not the word I would use. Teams would prefer not shooting at that rate. Most players at that % minimize shooting them, they don’t shoot them anyway and have their teams tolerate it because of their defense (or whatever they are adding).

If he’s going to shoot 1.5 a game, it matters less, but that also moots whether he goes from 11% to 33%, which is your claim.

sure, but even at 34% he turns down numerous wide open 3s per game. Even when he’s making the ones he takes he hurts more than he helps, because the offense will generate an open shot for him and he won’t take it.

What about this roster is there to take seriously? It’s incomplete.

Our center is 6’8. The other center is Kristaps Porzingis.
Our power forward is a hyper athletic 6’9 wing that plays with Trae Young levels of defense. Absolutely abominable defense.
Our small forward, last year’s number one pick, is on some sort of 20 minutes per game restriction, and only started getting minutes once he yelled at the coach in game.

Our big issue yesterday was piss poor defense. Dyson’s shooting foibles is just better engagement bait.

Obviously these are all problems right now, but I’m talking mostly future wise. Dyson is going to be useless against any competent team because he can’t shoot or create any space for himself with the ball. This is now our pg for the foreseeable future and I can’t imagine him having many impactful playoff minutes.

I don’t have the highest opinion of the other 3 guys either, but we can work around that if we get a top 3 pick. Nothing is going to fix dysons shooting.

He’s a bad shooter. We know this. But treating him like a shooting guard who is taking these shots is disingenuous. He is a solid offensive player who does his work with drives, cuts, and passing. He’s only averaging 1.5 attempts. Sometimes people have letters next to their name that don’t actually fit their role.

I’m not claiming he is a shooting guard. The thing I’m taking issue with is you saying he’s a “solid offensive player”. He’s not. The Hawks are forced to have him initiate a lot of offense because if he plays off-ball then the defense will completely ignore him, but having a non-shooter initiate the offense places an inherent ceiling on your offense. Yes, he has some offensive skills, but they come at a significant cost.

I’d want to argue because I like Dyson but I saw the exact thing play out with Ben Simmon’s career. You’re spot on about having a non shooter who isn’t a significant interior threat limits an offense.

Like you can still run decent offense, dho’s are a great way to punish sagging off a non shooter, but typically works better with a bigger body like when they’d run it with Embiid and Reddick. Anyone who has played knows that if you’re not worried about an outside shot punishing you, it frees up so much more, and yeah you might get got here in there but the drawbacks are so significant that it’s really a challenge to offset.

I’ve never been a good shooter but in pick up I need to at least hit one or at least fire confidently early and hope it drops or looks convincing, because it truly gunks everything up. So happy Big Penguin added a 3 ball
