When I injured my thumb the doctor and MRI specialist both agreed I needed surgery and I had completely tore my ligament, it wasn’t until I went and seen the Surgeon before he decided it was just a partial tear and no surgery was required.

Had to be on light duties for 3 months, immobilised in a splint for 6 weeks and it was only a partial tear.

I guess the theory would be, the Mavs don’t own their pick next year so they kinda have to try and win immediately. If AD gets surgery he’s out and helps the tanking part and they can just play him next year.

They probably believe that tanking now and drafting a high lottery pick and pairing that with Cooper, Kyrie and AD next year will make them good. They may be right especially if they get lucky and get a top 3 pick.

AD really wants an extension and the Mavs likely won’t give it to thim, so he wants to be traded as any team that trades for AD knows they are doing so with an extension in mind. So AD and Rich Paul’s camp is saying he doesn’t need surgery so there’s a chance he’ll play this year so a team may trade for him at the trade deadline. If he gets surgery instead that option is out of the window.

Also I guess the Mavs don’t want to just trade AD for nothing if they don’t have to. But at the same time they likely want his money off the book, I mean he will get paid 50+ mill next year and has a 60 mill PO the year after that. Any significant surgery is going to have a significant recovery period and generally if you do need surgery the earlier the better. It’s also an outcome thing. The injury might heal better via surgery than on its own but take longer to recover. A lot of factors none of us except the doctors that actually looked at the Injury and related scans could give insight to. Injuries really aren’t always as simple as “yes surgery or no surgery”.

I tore my thumb ucl and I’m through 4 of my 6 weeks splinted. Doctor seemed pretty confident that would heal it, then I’ll need pt (whole hand is weak af now even trying to workout however I can). He also said if I were a pro athlete, he’d recommend surgery (guarantee it gets fixed immediately) vs waiting and seeing, which is probably the recommendation from the other doc. But unless it’s fully torn and there’s zero stability I think the outcomes are still decent.
