None of the Lakers trades since AD were predicted or rumored in advance. They all came out of nowhere. Lakers were supposedly looking at signing Demar DeRozan when they actually traded for Westbrook. The Rui trade was out of left field. The outgoing Westbrook trade was predicted but a 3 way trade for the players involved was not. No rumors about the Lakers being interested in requiring D’Lo. No rumors about DFS. Luka trade was a complete bombshell.

The Warriors scuttled the Kuminga trade after seeing the reaction to the poopoo platter the Kings were offering in the offseason. Now Kuminga’s value is even worse, they are trying to create a bidding war between the Kings and themselves by making it sound that another team MIGHT be interested.

He has needed the ball to operate. He hasn’t fit into a system. Reaves, LBJ and Luka are going to get their shots. Kuminga doesn’t like the scraps he gets in GS, think he’ll like in LA? Ayton figured it out, but Kuminga might think he’s a star.

Also, his defensive weaknesses would be mitigated by just putting him on the best perimeter player all of the time, because the Lakers have no PoA defense. People are giving you a hard time, but he actually is a solid (not perfect, but solid) version of the kind of guy you want around Luka. A Luka offense is many things, but complicated isn’t one of them, and that’s what he struggles with, and the way you get a 3 point shot from Luka (stand there, they help off of you, and then you get an open one) is better for him than how you get it in the Warriors system (motion, moving around off of Steph, good instincts) and he is a great lob finisher, which would serve him well with Luka.

Ideally, you’d like a better shooter, but he is a good cutter and good on ball defender and he’s extremely athletic. His fit with Steph is actually totally fine, he just doesn’t fit with Jimmy or Draymond and those guys are better than him. I don’t know that there’s really a trade that makes sense to get him to the Lakers directly from the Warriors, but in a 3 way trade he would be a good pickup for them.

People mistake “he is a very bad fit with the Warriors” for “he is a very bad player”. He is a good, but flawed player in basically the worst situation in the league for him because he’s the 3rd best 4 on his own team and he can’t play very well with either of the other 2.

I wouldn’t be so sure about JK suddenly thriving if/when he is traded. He makes the same, self-inflicted mistakes every single year. He puts his head down and drives and either gets ripped or blocked. It’s quite maddening to watch as a fan. Also, his defense is nowhere near what it should be.

I just don’t love the fit for a team that already has their 1st/2nd/3rd scoring options set in stone (I might add: 3 guys who really need to dominate the ball to be most effective). Kuminga actually led the league in points off cuts among non-bigs a year ago, but he doesn’t seem content to stay in that sort of role. He’s similar to Ayton in some ways, if he could just stay mentally locked in as a role player, he would be a really good piece for a contender.
