They should have a retired players game at All Star Weekend
Would be cool seeing John Wall, Lou Williams, Blake Griffin etc ball again
Probably would play pretty hard too
That is all
They used to have the Legends game until Norm Nixon and David Thompson got seriously injured in 1992
I didn’t know this but it does add to what I was going to say. Mariano Rivera tore his Achilles playing in the Yankees old timer game last season. I’m cool with ex pro athletes staying at home or being honored at a ceremony. At a certain age your body can’t go full speed anymore.
They could do a game of horse bracket or something
Mariano Rivera tore his Achilles playing in the Yankees old timer game last season.
Dude, I just watched the video. How the hell? You can just start to casually run on flat ground and snap your achilles off like that? Now I’m afraid to move.
Don’t get old. It’s bad.
A group of work friends went out to play tennis. They were just casually hitting tennis balls around, and one went off to the side to stretch. A few moments later, they look over and he’s on the ground, writhing in pain. Full achilles tear. He was in his early 30’s. He got it surgically repaired, and then it got infected.
And then what?
Believe it or not, straight to jail
Basketball is also about as hard on your legs as any sport can be
That’s a bummer
Yep was about to say this
I’m always curious how the WWE handles this because they bring back legends quite frequently
They used to have an old-timers game but cancelled it back in the 90’s. Injuries happened almost every year and not just minor stuff. It was just depressing watching former all-stars come out and tear an ACL for an exhibition game.
Ok but what if we did it with football?
This the kind of smart thinking that gets you to into the current federal government.
What if they did a light shoot around instead?
Or perhaps play some family feud?
Horse
Just an old timers 3 point contest would probably work. Just increase the timer so they don’t have to haul ass
“Welcome to the 2063 NBA All Star game where we’ll see if Stephen Curry wins his 34th consecutive retired player 3 point contest”
Larry Bird’s going to go first, demand a timer, finish with seconds to spare, then he’ll heckle every other competitor telling them to haul ass
Make it a team contest. One old timer per rack. Two sets of old timers facing off.
That’s what happened to Mo Rivera at the Yankees old timers game last year. Tore his achilles, hopefully they keep up the tradition though. So fun to see all those guys getting out there.
He deserves it probably
Old timers three point shootout could prob still work
Would definitely watch
82 clippers games a year ain’t enough?
Nah what you want is “the masked baller”. Disguise 10 former players who still have it, and let them play a game, and try to figure out who is who.
Honestly dont hate this at all
Similarly, it could be 10 former players wearing those green skin tight suits and everyone guesses who they are based on bulge physique just walking down a runway, no basketball involved.
Skin tight green suit not needed. Simply make them naked and they can wear a mask.
Let’s make it like Lucha Libre and have the losers take off their masks.
Fuck it. Bring back Joes vs Pros. Lemme see Johnny from the circle K continue to talk about his highschool glory days while trying to score a touchdown on Brian Urlacher
This sounds AWESOME
This is just a jesser video
Nice idea!
This sounds dope as hell
Ah yes I would love to see 62 year old Michael Jordan out there 💀💀💀
I genuinely would love this and I think most NBA fans would as well
Agreed, they should do this with boxing too.
Lets bring mike tyson back and have him fight a youtuber, im sure it wont be disappointing
Well my thought was all retired players playing each other lol
Can finally have Jordan vs Lebron
Lavar and MJ one on one
BIG3
they retired for a reason. ok idea on paper but watching players not remotely as good as they used to be is overall just depressing.
(there are retired players in the celeb games and even that is not great)
there’s players who could definitely still compete in semi pro games like john wall, boogie, dwight, lou will, blake griffin, darren collison etc
That’s basically part of the celebrity game
Maybe something casual like a half-court pickup game. I can’t see most of them wanting to run full court
You juat described the big 3
So as others said, they used to have a Legends Game at All-Star Weekend before the David Thompson/Norm Nixon injury situation, leading to it being replaced by the Rookie Game.
That being said, one of my favorite points of reference comes from the 1990 Legends Game when Bobby Jones showed he could still dunk… at the ripe old age of 38.
I mean impressive obviously, but it’s definitely wild seeing that and then thinking about Lebron still putting guys in a poster at like 40.
They should let two fans play per year, one per team.
There should be a raffle system at the start of the season. Anyone interested in being an All-Star game participant must submit an official entry form. Confirm that they are physically fit OR willing to take on the challenge of guarding the world’s best talent.
They can hold a drawing in the days/weeks before the All-Star break. The lucky winners will get flown out to the event, get room & board paid for, and get the chance to play in front of millions.
I would legitimately PAY to enter this contest. I’m sure many others would and would train year round just in case they get a shot.
this but without the physically fit part.
i wanna see a 400 lb redditor defend giannis
I would prefer this in American Football.
Some poor soul would legitimately die if that happened lmao
Nostalgia sounds good until you realize guys hobbling around on bad knees and bow legged vets who can’t even move or shoot anymore is sadder than the local rec league game.
They would probably ball out more than the Allstar
Those guys don’t want to play and that’s what the Big 3 is anyway.
I went to All Star Saturday night in Miami in the early 90s when there was still a retired game. It was awful.
Which players were in it?
Rosters are at the bottom of this page
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_NBA_All-Star_Game
I remember watching part of the game. It was not exciting basketball.
Thanks.
The Big3 is pretty interesting, so it’s possible for the concept to work
That’s just called BIG3.
Isn’t that the Big 3?
Make them play in the smoothie center
Winner gets a 10 day contract with the Pels
Call it the ole chip
Yes. But not play basketball. Something else. Maybe dancing. Or a competition to do mundane things like keeping a dog off the couch or stomping one of those hoppy crickets that live in basements. Or maybe trying to make conversation with that neighbor who is obsessed with crypto.
Lmao there would be so many torn ACLs
Great idea. Let them play half court or 3x3 to reduce the amount of running they have to do
People saying the risk of injury is too high but testimonial and charity matches with retired players are quite common in soccer, and those geezers are playing full length 11 v 11 too.
Plus we have Big3
uncs still got it
I read this as “They should have retired the players game at All Star Weekend,” meaning the ASG. You’re not wrong on either count.
We need that shooting stars challenge. The Bosh swin cash team was fire
Honestly would much rather watch that then the celebrity game lol. Yeah the would most likely actually compete and show they still got it. That being said as was already the case in the past with the legends game game there would probably be legitimate concern in regards to injuries and I’m sure they’d wanna be payed to play.
No thanks
Most players won’t take the chance of embarrassing themselves. A shooting competition would be cool if guys could still go. Wonder if Bird could still go. Maybe HORSE?
MVP of each team gets a 10 day contract on the team of their choosing
Why? So we can see even less defense?
Do it on Xbox:ps5
I was today years old when I learned John Wall was retired
Why do you think it will be fun? Most star players’ last few seasons are pretty lackluster.
ZBo and Sheed would give everyone the business
What I really want is an all-star game for strictly current pro athletes that don’t play basketball professionally.
Nobody wants to see these influencers smoking layups at the celebrity game. We want Shohei rebounding the ball, Noah Lyles running the ball down the court and Garret Temple dunking the ball. And also it’d be great if they brought back the Footlocker Dunk Contests for pro non-basketball athletes as well, they could replace the actual dunk contest with it too.
Just asking for injuries. Someone is going to get hurt— or no one is going to go hard. The eternal balance.
The gambling scandals that would cause would be fun
Would love to see Magic flip a no look pass to Larry
Dr. J is gonna need a Dr
Ya you can’t pay enough
Absolutely not lmao. A better suggestion would be to hijack the Nike Summit, or whatever it’s called now, and throw that into Allstar weekend.
They had this and during the second or third “old-timers game” they had like 4 or 5 guys suffer major injuries (torn acls and Achilles).
Have all the broadcasters that are retired players go at it, maybe 3v3s, the TNT team of Shaq, Chuck, and Kenny, the Amazon team of Dirk, Nash, and Blake, the NBC team (by far the best) of Melo, Tmac, and Vince, and the ESPN team with Legs, Richard Jefferson and I guess Perk
You mean the Big 3 league?
My old high school has an alumni game every christmas season. Nearly every year someone blows up their knee or tears their Achilles.
Put them in the celebrity game
Yeah if you want a bunch of torn acls
I honestly think that the only thing that can save All Star weekend is, and I hate to say it, but basketball influencers and celebrities that can hoop. You know they’ll play hard.
I’d be all for a old-timer’s HORSE tournament, we can probably manage that without blowing out anyone’s knees.
No they wouldn’t
Replace the celebrity all star game with that instead.
lets go older barkley bird magic mullen malone stockton robinson itll be sensational
MLB had a retired players home run derby last year and it brought tears to my eyes to see Prince Fielder hitting bombs like he hadn’t missed a beat
What about a 1 v 1 tournament of retired players? 6’4 and shorter division and a 6’5 and taller division. Winners get $500k.
This would not be as interesting as you’d think
Besides what was already said about injuries, there’s also a matter of compensation. How do you do it in a way that gives them the proper respect and in a fair manner.
Lmao no. Those explayers are irrelevant podcasters. No one wants to see this
Speak for yourself lol, I’d definitely watch Wall and Blake go at it one more time. Way better than whatever celebrity game nonsense they usually put on
So you don’t watch Big3?
