Multiple things. Starting isn’t a big deal, it’s about finishing the game and it’s easier to manage minutes and have them finish if they aren’t starting.

Before players would rather miss games so their per game stats wouldn’t take a hit, but now that there’s the 65 game rule players wanna hit that minimum so they don’t miss out on a shit ton of money and lose their accolades

There has been research done on this, yes. It’s not even a conscious decision in most cases. It’s just a natural result of the way officiating works.

If one team is up 20 points, the consequences of calling a foul on them is less than calling a foul on someone down in points. It’s an “easier” call to make.

You’re talking about the law, not the scientific method. In the scientific method you usually use a frequentist system and just run whatever test you want with a null hypothesis. The null hypothesis would be that foul calls are the same regardless of winning or not. And a p<2.5% or so chance of getting the data you actually get would be indicative of at least something weird going on.

There’s no way this kind of study hasn’t been done. They’ve run studies to analyze whether making one shot makes you shoot better for the rest of the game (unsurprisingly debunked). And the one I mentioned on whether home teams get more calls (unsurprisingly proven, though I forget the p value and it was soccer). The data is all easily available.

Teams realized if a guy is on a minutes restrictions and starts it really blows up your rotations if you want him to close. So sitting for about a quarter makes it much easier to have normal rotations have the the minute restricted guy close

Eh, I’m an old Celtics fan. When I was younger, I was immersed in “old heads talking sports” because I worked in bar.

Old, OLD Celtic fans would, after a few drinks of truth serum, admit that Frank Ramsey sucked.

It’s a bit embarrassing to even try and defend Ramsey’s inclusion. It’s hard to find a good modern comp for a guy who was a mediocre 6th man who never made any ALL-teams, was mediocre defensively, and wasn’t even a prolific scorer off the bench.

Like if the Spurs win titles for the next decade and Jeremy Sochan is there for all the titles. Not a key player, but a role player. Fans love that he tries hard but never want him to play more, never think he should take a bigger role. Puts up 13 ppg, never wins an award, never stands out.

Doc is … not a good coach. But he has a much stronger HOF resume than Frank “the passenger” Ramsey.

He never had to invent regular season wins wit mediocre rosters and when he did in Boston he kind of sucked at it and people thought he should be fired before they put together a superteam that saved his career. After that he basically got gifted great players to stack regular season wins for him. Any coach could win 50 games with Chris Paul and prime Blake Griffin.
