Refs kinda do this all the time now; call one sided fouls to keep the game close and then do ‘fair’ officiating during clutch time. Oh well, that was a fun ass game, playoff like atmosphere and everything; wish we had both JT and Wemby at 100%.

Spurs got 20.

The Celtics got called for 18 fouls. The Spurs got called for 13. This isnt some grand conspiracy or even a poorly officiated game. Both teams were physical. Neither side was in foul trouble really.

The Spurs just happened to get fouled in the act more because KJ and Castle attack the rim consistently. Jaylen consistently shot the midrange.

Its hard to guard Wemby without fouling and he only shot 4 tonight because he also settled for midrange. One of his FTs came from being blatantly pushed on a made 3. So he got 3 FTs in the flow of offense.

Its just how the game was called.

He didn’t seem to complain about getting twice the free throw attempts as the raptors in the last game. Probably because they’re not a ‘good team’ by his standards.

I do think refs are way over their heads with how fast the game is, how the rules are set up, and how good offensive players are getting at grifting. It’s a mix of incompetence, crappy rulebook, and players abusing the system.

As of Dec 2025: Jaylen Brown Averaged 16.5 Drives per game Vs 5FTA avg per game. Jalen Brunson is Averaging 16.6 drives per game Vs. 6.5 FTA per game. SGA Averages 18.0 and gets 8.9 FTA.

Sure, Brunson and SGA might not get all the calls when driving, but shit, that’s the general excuse 99.9% of the Time “He doesn’t drive as much”.

Edit: Austin Reaves drives 18.6 times per game, 11.2 FTA per game. Just curiosity.

NBA reffing in general is awful, it might be the worst in pro sports

For example, in no other sport do you see people say shit like the “rookie whistle” or “superstar whistle”. Why should a player have a worse whistle just because he’s a rookie? Why do certain superstars get a whistle for initiating contact when a role player isn’t allowed to do the same?

Go ahead and cherrypick a play or two but NBA officiating has a time-honored tradition of not giving you bail out calls in crunch time if you’ve treated what is now the restricted area like a poison swamp in a FromSoftware game for 46 minutes.

I agree that the NBA has an officiating problem but gameflow is a real thing and bitching about it afterward has a 0% success rate. At least have the common decency to get a tech in the middle of a game while you still have the opportunity to affect the outcome.

But the variance in calls from game-to-game, quarter-to-quarter, player-to-player. Then you have the fact that refs ignore travels, palming, moving screens. Then there’s the sports betting. My faith in the league would go up significantly if they only got rid of the guy who had hundreds of calls to convicted game fixer Tim Donaghy. There is no excuse for him still being connected to organized sports let alone having the NBA egregiously calling him one of their best

This might blow his mind, but sometimes one team fouls more than the other. A FT discrepancy isn’t always the refs missing calls. Spurs were more disciplined on defense tonight, that’s all there is to it.

People should be careful what they wish for. I’m sure the technology exist now to observe the game with multiple cameras in realtime and detect contact. Game would be stopped every few seconds. There’s always some subjectivity necessary if you want flow and for fans, and players, to enjoy the game. I think they really need to allow more contact tbh. Tough shot making is a lost art. I think they need to allow more body contact for defenders on drives and only call fouls if the shooting arm is touched and before the ball is released. The “high five “ foul is BS. And shooters jump vertically, you jump forward or to the side at your own peril. This is how it used to be and no one really complained or thought they were fouled

I know people think the drama like this is funny but I actually hate it because it just feels like in professional wrestling when every single major match comes down to some disqualification nonsense to make sure nobody feels like they lost. The losing team just cries about how they were wronged every night, the fans put an asterisk on everything and it is getting old.

It really feels like refs get their directives from the league some sort of way based on how fans are reacting to certain teams, players on social media. Same thing happened to OKC where fans were frustrated with their winning streak so their free throws randomly dropped to 28th in the league from 16th over the last month or so.

JB has a great point here, and glad he is speaking the truth. He got mauled at least half a dozen times that I counted while he was driving to the hoop.

At least three (2nd SAS game, infamous Finch crashout game, the latest Suns game) of our losses this season happened because of the huge fta disparity against the opposing team.

Hopefully more players and coaches call it out so the officiating is fair both ways and either calls fouls or let both teams play.

The whistle we got against the spurs was diabolical on the road. Wemby leaves the game and Luke kornet draws 3 fouls in within 10 seconds of play time. Spurs in the bonus with 9 minutes to spare in the 4th. A 2 point loss with a 20-40 FTA disparity. Disgusting.
