A large portion of the hawks fanbase is scapegoating Trae right now when he has played a total of 42 minutes with Jalen and KP this season.

As a hawks fan, I think Trae is a bad defender and isn’t a max player but the biggest problem is the trio of JJ, Okongwu and Quin Snyder. Those 3 are much more destructive on defense. You can win with bad PG defense but you can’t win with bad center and PF defense and an idiot coach.

Idk, I know Onsi is a hero for the Pels pick but forcing this team to be year 3 in a row without a rim protector is malpractice. Quinn cant turn OO into a player he isnt, he will never be able to anchor a defense. Hes a small ball 5 who can defend being faced up against 4s and his offense has made HUGE strides.

JJ needs to take ownership over his own defense at this point.

Zacc needs more reps, but Quinn is also trying to win and is in a damned if we do damned if we dont sorta spot with him because he has not been good.

Dyson’s playmaking has gotten better, but there is zero future for him as a starter on a winning team if he keeps shooting like he is.

Porzingis has been a ghost but when he does play he’s more matchup dependant. Theres a reason he took the contract he did.

NAWs been great though.

Idk why we’d be so gung ho on trading Trae now when we have Porzingis’ $30M coming off the books next year to find a center, and we get to add Petersen/Dybantsa/Boozer especially when it seems hes at the nadir of his value. I dont know whos even gettable in FA next year we would even want to target by freeing up Traes money too.

I get downvoted in the hawks subreddit for being critical of the way Onsi handled filling out the back end of the bench this season.

I am low on Quinn as a coach because his rotations are bad and when given the chance to play defenders like Risacher and Mo Gueye, he opts to give minutes to Wallace or Asa Newell. We are playing a rookie PF at center over Mo Gueye who has a good defensive rating because Quin prefers the 3 point shooting.

Meh IMO NBA Rotations/MLB Bullpen managemnt/NFL playcalling are all cut from the same cloth. Fans always complain about it no matter what.

This team doesnt look any different because Mo Gueye is averaging 4 more minutes a game at the expense of Asa Newell. Also Asa has looked really good in his limited time and people would just start complaining again that Quinn isnt playing our first round pick.

I generally agree with the first point, but the second point i just don’t agree with at all.

Mo has a much greater wingspan and is taller, and if a better defender by a mile. When KP isn’t playing he is the best option on the available roster to play backup center. (I think Asa is better long term, but If player development is the priority then Risacher needs more minutes and more usage).

When the defense is getting killed without trae young available, and you are actively making lineup decisions that make the defense worse, it’s very fair to criticize.

The fact is that if we have to rely on Mo Gueye to anchor a defense then we’re dead anyway. No playoff team has a player at his development stage playing that role. If you want to get him the minutes for development than sure but again I refer to Quinn being between a rock and a hard place because of the roster construction.

Onsi spending the league minimum on a 3rd center who had zero NBA experience was malpractice and a joke of a KP insurance policy. Totally get and agree with the roster construction criticism.

If you want to prioritize player development and play Asa even though it would hurt short term, then that’s totally understandable until you see the number 1 overall pick getting 24 minutes a night on 17% usage.

The bulls game was my personal last straw with Quin. With about 40 seconds to go in a tie game, the hawks had the chance to sub in a defensive lineup. Vit kreji was kept in the game over Risacher. Vit kreji allowed an offensive rebound and the bulls got 2 free throws to take the lead and eventually win the game.

I mean he was hot garbage for half the game. I’m pretty sure he racked up 4 mostly pointless fouls without scoring at all or doing much of anything before he came back in the second half. He 100% contributed to the massive deficit we had in the first 1.5 quarters.

Glad he put together a reasonable game afterwards, but let’s not pretend he wasn’t killing us just as much as he was helping us this game.

I felt bad for him. He was shooting really well in the 3rd and 4th. He had just hit a big 3 in the 4th, and was open again on the next possession, but Daniels looked him off and instead bricked a floater, the same shot he had just missed a few mins prior. Then Risacher had no choice but to defend the fast break and foul out.

Still don’t like him as our head coach if we are trying to compete, but at least he has finanly started making the right decision, and going with the guys who are winning us the game, and not the overpaid starters.

Also, this team looked like this when we were rolling early before RJ got hurt, then were super lackadaisical and mopey when he wasn’t playing, and are now locked in again that he is back. I feel it has a lot more to do with RJ, then Darko mysteriously getting them to buy in again.

One of the issues I have with what’s gone on with Trae this year is the Hawks FO seems to be blaming him for this season going down the drain. Trae has his issues, but as we we’ve seen a couple times now this team has many issues. It’s no “remove Trae and Hawks are good”.

Quinn Snyder is trying to run the same schemes and system in ATL that he did in Utah. IT DOES NOT WORK. Why? Hawks don’t have Rudy Gobert. Or even a decent center.
