I don’t think it was necessarily “coasting,” but all the players just had a really short offseason combined with injuries and fatigue just made it more difficult. They played until mid/late June because of the NBA Finals. Then Tatum, Jrue, and White were called up for the Olympics where the training camp started like 2 weeks after the Finals and then they played all the way to the Gold medal match that ended in mid-August. That’s almost 3 months less of rest compared to the rest of the NBA

I’m not particularly vocal online, but I have been saying since early summer there was no way in hell Mazzulla or the Celtics franchise was going to tank or take a gap year. I also was not surprised about Walsh. I’ve been following him the last few years in G League and we got flashes of his potential. I legitimately thought we could be a 3 or 4 seed after the Hugo pick, and now I’m not even sure that’s our ceiling this year.

Jaylen is playing at top 5 all NBA/MVP caliber for sure, but the real story is that unless things go terribly wrong the rest of the season, Joe Mazzulla is unequivocally the Coach of the Year.

His willingness to just play the right player for the moment, regardless of whatever starter etiquette players might expect, etc., is why this team is performing at this level. (Actually there is one exception to that. There have been nights when Prichard should have sat more for Simons to get more minutes.) Hauser started over Walsh tonight. I don’t know what reason Joe had for that, but there was one, and I’m sure it was the right call.

2 or 3 weeks back when he pulled all the starters, that decision made headlines, but no one talked about why. 3 of the starters literally stood there doing nothing under the basket while the opponent went for the easy inside shot. I can’t even recall if the shot was made and they didn’t contest, or if they let the opponent get an o.reb. without contesting, but that was why he pulled the whole team.

Tonight he had just put Neemias back in for Garza to rest, and Neemy missed an easy shot. Joe pulled Neemy right away and put Garza right back in. He’s clearly taught the team they have no room for error this season if they want to win games, and the team has bought in completely. It’s legitimately been my favorite season/squad since the Bird era.

I’m stealing this from Bill Simmons, but I think he’s 100% right, the entire team is filled with guys that are all out to prove something. Jaylen has never had a chance to be the #1 guy, Pritchard hasn’t had many opportunities to start, Queta was discarded by the Kings, and was behind KP, Kornet, and Horford, on the depth chart last year. Derrick White has always been a #3 in the shadow of Tatum and Brown, Minott and Garza both had tons of DNP’s when they were with Minnesota, Simons is on an expiring deal, Jordan Walsh is getting a chance to shine. The whole team is all hungry to prove something.

Brad Stevens did an amazing job of retaining veteran leadership, with young, hungry, players that will ride into battle with the veterans and Mazulla as their leader.

I think that Tatum has a broader skill set. He can do literally anything at a high level (outside of off the bounce threes). But I don’t think he is incredible at any one thing. I think that Brown certainly has more deficiencies but is an elite, A+ tough shot maker and can absolutely put clamps on a guy. (See Dallas having like an 84 offensive rating with Brown as the primary Luka defender in the finals on a pretty big sample). It depends on what you value, I suppose.

Honestly, I’d prefer if we didn’t make any deadline moves just because I feel like most teams making these types of moves are always doing so with only the short-term in mind. This is supposed to be a “gap year” for us too and I just think our ceiling is an ECF appearance so it’s not worth it trying to do anything crazy and instead just let the season play out and see how they perform in the playoffs before going anything in the offseason

Problem is there doesn’t seem to be anyone on the market that we could trade for who would also move the needle for us.

Although the funny scenario I’m hoping for is the Hawks use Porzingis as filler in a trade for another player before the deadline (AD, Giannis, some other big name player, etc) and then that team buys him out and he comes back to us for a season on a vet minimum lol.

As bizarre as it sounds, I’m way more confident in this year’s team than everybody else, and I’m way more skeptical about next year’s team than everyone else.

This year’s team has a rhythm with JB being the guy, and as much as I love JT, at some point he’s going to want to be himself again, and I think that will be a tough push and pull given JB’s leap this season.

I think this season JT will just play a role because he’s trying to come back and help the team win and slowly get back to being himself.

Also there’s the whole even year / odd year thing with us. Don’t really get why it’s a thing, but it clearly is.

I’m not as worried as you are because Tatum is pretty much the best plug and play player in the entire league. He’ll still eat because of his talent, but he will also blend in seamlessly to the new Celtics. It’s White/Pritchard/Walsh that will see less run with the ball, but I think that’ll actually be good for White/Pritchards efficiency and Walsh will likely just be the person taking the non-Brown/Tatum minutes

It’s really hard to understate how crazy this Celtics season has been. Jaylen Brown has taken another step into an All-NBA 1st team caliber player. Many of the Celtics unproven young players have provided great rotational minutes (Gonzalez, Walsh, Queta, Minott, Garza?). Joe Mazulla has really shown he is a tier 1 coach in this league.

Don’t look now, but the Celtics are ¹⁄₂ a game behind the Knicks for the 2 seed, and only 3 games back of the 1 seed. They also have the 3rd best Net Rating in NBA, 1st in the East.

Yeah, people saying he was always capable of this are capping. He’s had plenty of non-Tatum and shorthanded Celtics minutes to show he was that caliber, and he wasn’t. But that doesn’t take away from what he is currently doing. He has developed even further and looks absolutely lethal.

Everyone’s gonna talk about Brown but honestly everyone on the Celtics were really good tonight. They showed the reason why they are of the best teams in the NBA is because the whole team plays great defense, anyone can score, and they have great ball movement. This team showed very few weaknesses.

We held on for as long as we could. We went on a cold streak at the end of the 3rd into the beginning of the 4th and it was over for us.

Celtics really just exposed our obvious weaknesses. BroLo is basically unplayable in matchups like these (speed, drop coverage, guards to take him off the dribble, rebounding), and if Zu isn’t able to capitalize on offense, then he’s also a liability out there. We also lost just because the Celtics won every ⁵⁰⁄₅₀ ball, which isn’t some coincidence. Basically nobody on our team except Collins/DJJ/Dunn have any urgency when the shot goes up, and the Celtics always got multiple possessions on rare misses.

LAC likely should have been blown out in the first half, but John Collins and to a lesser extent, Kawhi, kept it competitive.

Don’t think this is a game that LAC would have had a chance to win no matter with how hot JB/White were, but Ty Lue leaving Zu/BroLo in was absolute coaching malpractice. Zu wasn’t contesting anything well inside nor was he able to punish the C’s on the other side. BroLo was literally attacked every time on defense. No reason Ty should have kept playing that style, yet we died on that sword.
