JJ Redick on the Lakers’ loss to the Pistons: “They’re a really good, physical basketball team[…]I think there’s probably a level of frustration when you’re turning the ball over and you feel like you’re getting fouled[…]you gotta play through it.”
This is a soundbite from a coach who accepted reality. He realized no level of “making practices uncomfortable” will change things.
This is who the roster is.
Yup. He’s no longer mad too. He’s desensitized. Numb.
As a Lions fan, we know that look when we see it.
As a Cardinals fan, we know it even better
I’m tired of being what you want me to be
Lost under the surface
RIP Chester
I mean, there’s a difference between getting blown out on a big night against a struggling HOU team vs. losing to a top team.
Both are better teams . Lakers were never contenders, just reality.
so we agree that the suns are better than the lakers right 👀
Defensive culture >> Highlight Reel Culture
Right now, they are. The results speak for themselves
Well they got rid of Ayton at the right time didn’t they?
“Struggling” it was a minor skid. They are 2nd in net rating in the NBA
JJ has gone through the stages. Is he in Depression or Acceptance though? We will never know.
As much as people hated on Vogel and Ham at the time, this is the same point they reached. After tweaking the line-ups a few times, the roster was still flawed so they phoned it in and just let it happen. It’d be JJ’s biggest accomplishment if he doesn’t just phone it in and give up, if he can turn it around and at least get the players to hold the locker room together that’d be huge for culture and continuity.
I think the convo around the lakers is a little defeatist right now. No you guys aren’t contenders but most people didn’t (or shouldn’t at least) have expected you to be with your roster. It’s not good enough yet on paper or the court. The goal this season with the current should’ve always been to just make the playoffs and hope you can cause an upset from there. Expecting a ring was setting up for disappointment.
It’s a learning experience, still learning he has to work on LeBron’s schedule. Although birthday boy did show up last night, we don’t see real L.A basketball till after the deadline since Bron has joined this team. By Lakers standards we are right where we need to be, if you think anyone on this team isn’t untradeable except Luka and LeBron then you don’t know the Lakers and Rob Pelinka, come February he will find the piece and we will be playoff ready.
He knows Detroit is better, but can’t come right out and say it.
Detroit is a team. Credit to Tim Legler who saw this coming a year ago.
Jerry West before Dr Buss bought the team vibes
I knew after the first half Detroit will win. Luka and LeBron kept the Lakers close, but their role players were just not athletic or good enough. Detroid was just going into the paint with ease, while Luka and LeBron had to do everything on offense and make difficult shots.
In the second half they got tired and Detroit keep on running. Every role player on Detroit played well and aggressive, while Lakers just don’t have enough players that can do that.
The Pistons have the depth to throw bodies for 4 quarters so teams with little depth will get tired because the Pistons will be physical and try to run if they can.
Most top teams have that. And Lakers are not one of them
Yep. I feel like JJ has previously seemed a bit delusional about how good his team can be. He’s doing a phenomenal job maximizing his roster, but he can’t see it.
Some arent even bad individual players but put together, theyre not a good team. its so blatantly obvious the the GM sunk this thing, thinking he got a solution in luka, but the ultimate solution was putting a team around luka, which hes not basketball smart enough to do
The Pistons shot 63% of their field goals. The Lakers’ defense was horrific. That’s a shooting percentage equivalent to getting everything at the rim.
Sounds like a coach who realized if he sneak disses Luka or Lebron again he won’t be the coach
Idk why he’d sneak diss those 2 players bc they’re literally all they have plus Reaves
It might be bout Rui and the other bench guys. Def bout Luka too tho, he needs to play defense. It’s bad. I’m a firm believer that if a very talented offensive player plays defense a bit harder his team would score even more.
If you cant criticize your most important players what are you even around for as a coach
He got a 6 year extension this offseason or something like that
Maybe don’t keep forcing Smith Jr minutes after he has 3 straight turnovers
Who else should they play? He is the only guy left who can bring up the ball.
Just play Luka and Lebron for the whole 48 minutes in a regular season game duh
Sounds like his last season
I’m going to make practice uncomfortable! Just kidding, here is a cake for LeBron’s birthday!
So stop doing your job?
Sounds more like a scapegoat lol
No I want him running after lazy players with a rake, growling at them during practice.
Luka brought beers to the uncomfortable practice
He knows this team is mentally weak and one dimensional as fuck
It’s been a trend on LeBron teams, and Luka’s traffic cone defense doesn’t set any better examples. Throw in Ayton for more uncoachable and selfish attitudes, and this is what you get. Such a horrible team to watch, the only way they can win is off of star power and free throws
If you’re talking pre-chip LeBron and the post 2021 Lakers squad I can see your point. Otherwise it would look a bit ignorant to call teams who came back down 3-1 in the finals or won a disney bubble chip ‘mentally weak.’
He’s a Piston fan, he got double the gripe against LeBron lol
It’s just the current narrative, don’t worry it will change tomorrow.
Such is Reddit.
I think that post is probably referring more to being one-dimensional hero ball than the mentally weak side of things. Though, there is a side of that occasionally.
How many people from the 3-1 team are still playing?
Like the team name doesn’t have some kind of weird prestige points that it gets to relocate every year.
I feel like nobody would ever mention that unless the lakers were winning, ayton is a non factor and one of the first to quit. He gets mad if they don’t lob him, he’ll get dejected if he fucks up a lob. He’ll literally stop getting rebounds and just quit
Ayton is mirroring his player-leaders on the court
Then what was his excuse in Phoenix when he did the same thing next to Book and CP3? The dude is just soft and low motor. Doesn’t matter where he is.
Yeah Ayton is who he’s always been but he now has the laker lights on him so it seems like it’s even worse?
It’s not. This is who he’s always been.
No joke, every time I tuned into a lakers game someone was on the free throw line lol.
JJ was also a traffic cone. Part of the problem here may be a traffic cone trying to lead other cones into playing defense
JJ was not a traffic cone he just didn’t have the size or skills. He actually put a lot of effort in defensively, especially in his younger days
The lack of energy from the Lakers and their fans during this game was so weird. I remember watching the Lakers during the Kobe days, even when they had a down season like 06-07 the fans were still really passionate.
most of the real fans got priced out and this Lakers is really weird to watch aswell.
Lebron doesn’t have the following in LA that Kobe had
Luka can do defense as well. He demonstrated it in Dallas and with Slovenia. I would say he dont want to be in LA and with many others he also cannot wait for Lbj retire.
Ah yes, the guy who went to 10 straight championships is known for having mentally weak teams
But as a coach he should be able to change that, means that experienced/leaders players don’t respect him at all
I think it’s lazy to always blame the coach. When players play a certain way their entire career (Ayton, Luka), or don’t have the physical tools to do better (Reaves, Old LeBron), it’s unrealistic to expect a coach to magically change things. Players hold accountability for their effort.
JJ needs to quit before this team makes him lose his luscious locks.
Forget quitting, he should just not give a single fuck. The team clearly doesn’t. Show up to games in a Hawaiian shirt absolutely blasted off some wine. Hit some golf swings in the timeouts like LeBron
JJ is too serious and competitive of a guy from what I know he’d have to be having a mental breakdown to do this 🤣
I mean not unless he wants to have a coaching career after this
He should 100% pull a Monty Williams and have a great time
I hate the Lakers as much as the next guy, but don’t put that evil on anyone. The checked out Monty Williams is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.
Still absolutely insane that they hired him in the first place. He didn’t even want to coach and they had to throw an insane amount of money at him to get him to come out of retirement, was that not a HUGE red flag in itself?
I miss his podcast, he should return.
I think the lakers really need a really good mood coach, i think its time for lakers to swap him with doc rivers.
He might start going grey by the end of the season.
So you mean by the trade deadline?
He deserves credit for not having gone there already through 1.5 year in LA.
Also probably wasn’t fun when his house burned down 7 months into the job.
Just say Luka JJ
Luka wasn’t even complaining like crazy this game. Cade was chirping way more than Luka was in the first half
What actually happened is Luka had his way grifting vs Ausar then Ron Holland came in and locked his shit up
Well JJ already pulled the “these guys suck” card on Christmas so he’s waived the white flag to rob now (he’s been saying we don’t have defensive personnel since the summer btw).
He does look ready for a trade
This JJ coaching run is looking similar to Nash’s run with the Nets albeit Nash had to deal with Kyrie’s off the court issues and his star players barely seeing the court together while JJ’s is purely cause of how garbage the Lakers are at defense
Nash lasted 2 and a half years lol so we’ll see if JJ can match that lol
It’s the same situation your right. 2 coaches with no prior experience coaching teams with massive ego’s
Nash was an assistant coach with GSW right?
Wasn’t an assistant coach, he was a player development consultant from 2015 to the KD warriors era
It’s how he got close with KD and why KD wanted him to be the coach in Brooklyn
wait so steve nash has a ring as a consultant right?
JJ woulda of been fire on a young team
nash was just a bad coach. jj isnt
Yeah, its a completely fair comparison given the circumstances but JJ is better than Nash.
Its simple, cades just better than luka, not to mention the other pistons
“You turning the ball and feel like you’re getting foul “. That’s ironic to say when lot of time Lakers benefit on those type of situations
He’s blaming Luka here not the refs.
He said the Pistons foul every play.
He’s blaming everyone.
I mean Pistons play same kind of hard defense like us, the Lakers just don’t have the same kind of guys to play that way
They put LaRavia, Luka, Bron and Haynes on the floor together
Just driving the lane give easy points
The fact that a rookie is our most athletic player really shows how unathletic our team is. Sad to say really.
The refs gotta play thru it i guess
Luka is a whiny bitch. Always getting fouled but never committing one. Shut up and play already!
8 turnovers in the game for Vampire Luka
but not directly, just some unnamed chunky slovenian. could be anyone really
Nah, it’s both. He didn’t get the usual Laker whistle and is crying about it.
Bad boy pistons baby
The way to beat the Pistons is widely documented (zone defense and take away the paint).
It was shocking watching a team supposedly coached and made up some of the best minds in the game just not be able to stop the Pistons’ very fundamental style of game (hard defense, interior offense). If you want to beat the Pistons, take away the interior scoring and make everyone shoot it. Instead the Lakers let the Pistons run a layup line even though that’s exactly how we love to play.
To be fair, this Laker team is extremely vulnerable to the layup line offense
I remember during the preseason saying something along the lines of “they will be lucky if they don’t average 160 opponent points per game this season.”
Reaves Luka Ayton and senioritis LeBron was never going to be a winning basketball team
You missed the part where you used the word defense. The Lakers can’t do that. Hope that helps you understand them
Ayton isnt even engaged this game.
Luka aint helping interior defense.
Zone defense with this personel is just so easy.
The Lakers never even attempted to play zone until the fourth when they were already down by double digits. Shocking really. If they made that adjustment earlier it might have been a different game.
Bro the Lakers took 31 FT’s lol. It’s over. We’ve reached the “blame the refs” stage
He’s blaming Luka not the refs and he’s right
The refs aren’t why Bron bricked 4-5 straight shots. Dude was terrible in the second half tonight.
It wasn’t just 4-5 bricks. He started the game 2⁄2, I thought he was going to have another really efficient night like Sunday. But then he shot 4⁄15 after that. Just jacking 3’s up hitting the side of the backboard and shit lol
LeCliff
how do you end up getting exactly opposite of what JJ was saying.
He was saying players should play through it instead of being fraustrated
This is way better than throwing his own players under the bus tbh
I might sound dumb but Luka signing an extension with the Lakers was a bad idea if he wants to win championships
I genuinely don’t think their FO has what it takes to build a good roster around him especially if their new owner doesn’t even get a chance to take over operations immediately. They don’t even have much assets so he’s literally wasting his prime rn. He could’ve just looked around other contending teams & said “I wanna win with you”
but he didnt. dont blame anyone else, he willingly chose to live in hollywood then winning.. and it is what it is, its not right or wrong, its just his choice
most stars dont even get desperate to win until they are past their prime anyways….
what are they supposed to do when LeBron is being paid $50m? they’ll be true contenders once he’s retired
Pelinka will use that \(50m to sign another aging player like PG or Kawhi instead of trying to sign 2-3 solid guys that are on \)12-20m deals
Didn’t you hear? Pelinka is getting fired.(God I hope he leaves this job)
I think a Reaves/Luka backcourt won’t be able to win a championship. Way too soft on the perimeter. You’d basically have to build a roster like the ‘24 Mavs to cover for them but it’d be even harder because Kyrie is a way better defender than Reaves.
If Luka cared about winning he’d at least try on defense. Man is a one way competitor right now
How about he starts playing some level of defence first.
We’ll see what the lakers can do. Rob gets a lot of shit especially from lakers fans, but he’s also had much less leeway than other teams. Presti’s obviously the best gm in the league, but the current OKC roster also wouldn’t be quite what it is if the front office refused to tank. Heck even with Wemby’s seasons the spurs have made sure to lose and gather promising young pieces around him. Rob’s made several good moves that fans often gloss over, but he’s always put into a difficult situation with how the lakers are always in a win now mode. This, combined with his weakness of losing on the margins is what is scary.
Atp the lakers are so asset deprived that if Rob makes even one wrong move, the lakers can kiss their championship window goodbye. It’s clear this roster needs a lot of retooling, and the lakers need to make the right decision many times from this point forward.
This is why I feel like it would’ve been best for yall to just not trade for him in the first place. No i’m not bashing the trade from the Lakers side, anybody should say yes because Nico gave up his leverage but what i’m saying is due to your depleted assets, there’s not much things Rob can do to accommodate a player of his caliber who’s bad on defense & complains to the refs
You’re naive if you don’t think the new ownership has already taken over control lol.
i’ve heard other Lakers fans say Jeanie & Rob are still in control while the deal finalizes or some shit like that. apparently it won’t be a while until the new owners start doing shit their way
Nico built the best Luka focused roster. Maybe the Lakers should hire him.
it wasn’t Nico apparently. the one behind the PJ and Gafford trades turned out to be Dennis Lindsay according to reports. he’s now the pistons VP btw. those were the trades that got them over the hump imo
They’re gonna foul ever possession? 😂😂😂 how many free throws do the lakers need? Maybe learn how to play physical and stop being babies.
Cade ended with 3 fts compares to Luka’s 13 and he was fouled many times. Refs didn’t care. Oh well! Deal with it JJ and Luka. Learn how to play against teams that play actual defense
He sounds like my boss, always blaming the workers doing the actual work while he sit in his office smoking a cigars and drinking wine! Then later, he throw us under the bus and take no responsibilities!! I wish they both get fired!
exquisite comment
Username is somehow icing on the cake for me
This is giving me Eastern European vibes and I don’t know why
lmao
LOL
Lol
I was sure this was a Simpsons quote but Google is failing me
Tonight, our now 41year old team captain Lebron was a hyper-efficient 17 points on 17 shot attempts, 3 for 10 on 3’s, and 40% from the line (that’s a 35/30/40 split), plus he had 4 rebounds and 4 assists. He also remained ultra efficient on defense by hiding under the basket between offensive possessions. As a result he ended up with a -33 plus/minus for the game. This effort contributed to a brutal 22pt beating by the Pistons.
JJ is the type of coach whose favorite part of the job is the press conference.
Or podcast
Doc? Is that you?
Soft
Lakers feeling like they are getting fouled, who would have guessed
Lakers are reminding me of last years suns. It’s crazy how all the talent in the world can’t win if they’re soft as shit. Thank the good lord for Dillon brooks
There needs to be some stat to visualize and also look at the eye test issues.
Defensively, we know the team can’t stop penetration. JJ appears content to coach, dropping under the screens and then give up the dribble/pullup 3. The problem is the smart teams are slipping and getting that high post entry pass.
This game really shows the lack of coaching the backline rotation. It’s not even the opposite corner bailout three pass that is the issue. The pistons were just getting a step and doing reverse layups on the other side of the basket.
What’s infuriating is the team defense philosophy is so poorly coached/enforced. The teams is so focused on the onball penetration issue, that they are stagnant and zone guarding passing lanes when it should be defined who the lowman rotation should be. And here’s the problem with the roster. No one is good at it, but at the same token, it’s doesn’t even seem to be coached as there’s the scheme issue.
Today’s game, the pistons just attack and the lakers rotational defense doesn’t matchup the rotations well at all.
Multiple pistons drivers where Luka/Laravia/Vando token step over to slap at the ball. If they, went hard they should be contesting that reverse layup. The flip side, you have guards rotating to slide under for charges.
I think the lakers need to concede drive, focus on funneling the driver into a tough shot, and have the guy funneling focus on the box out after funneling them into the low man, with the weakside guard covering the lowman man.
It doesn’t make sense to have the rotation focus so much on passing lane and letting hayes/ayton drop every time to contest/block shots.
It’s really not scheme imo, it’s simply effort. None of Ayton, Luka or LeBron give their all on defense. Luka just stands there. There’s no scheme that can defend 4v5 let alone 2v5 at times, Redick has his hands tied
Yeah, I don’t know why people are so hell bent on blaming a coach for poor defense with this personnel.
Then bench Luka he’s literally the coach he’s one of the only people who doesn’t have his hands tied lol. Too scared to be wrong or look bad so he’s just gonna give up?
That’s because the only player that steps over to draw a charge on the team, regardless of size, is Austin Reaves. Everyone else just is standing watching, waiting to jump.
Loser talk
Just say it’s Luka, man. He’s been a turnover machine and lets players walk by him. JJ just looks done with this team and I can’t blame him.
The team needs to stop embracing the drinking culture. The frustration is from their drinking
The Lakers are gonna keep getting worse because of Lebron’s ego. He relegated Austin Reaves to the bench with the help of Rich Paul, and the team has gotten waay worse defensively since James has been back from injury.
Never pictured JJ being a pushover coach. He was so tough and assertive around Stephen A and Perkins but now he is vague and timid with media and is nowhere near the man that used to call out Doc Rivers
It’s a lot easier to do that when you’re able to hide behind a screen.
Yet another keyboard warrior/talking head who crumbles when actually placed in a real environment with real people. This and the weather, tonight at 11.
this guy’s a complete asshole but his roster blows
both things can be true
Bro thinks he’s Finch
Neither have won anything
JJ isn’t head coach material.
Funny how when the Lakers are losing, the LeBron queens say it is Luka’s team
But when the Lakers are winning, they say it’s LeBron’s team 🤣
Go get your nails done for your king 💅
Literally no one says that
adding literally to sentence doesn’t make it true, literally.
Did he say anything about LeBron clocking out early?
That’s a man that knows these dudes are beat and is waiting for the trade deadline to care about them again
yep
Go back to podcasting bum
Kind of an outlier outside shooting night for both sides (Detroit especially good, LA bad). It happens. I wouldn’t be too worried by it.
“They’re a very very good team, unlike the team I’m coaching, But hey, it is what it is, go lakers”
NICO WAS RIGHT
fuck off JJ the whistle is the only thing that kept it within 30
Lmfao
Player - broadcaster - podcaster- nba coach.. what could go wrong?!
Oh shut the fuck up you get enough FTs already 🙄
nod to lakers and nuggets lose the game that spurs can still sit on the second place after 2L in-a-row
Lol complaining about fouls when they got so many foul calls in this game. Cade got 1 free throw and that was on a technical. The only reason it was close until the fourth quarter was all the foul calls the Lakers got.
They just got out worked by a hungrier more aggressive team. You can talk about fouls all you want. Your team didn’t make shots and turned the ball over. One of your guys literally lost the ball out of bounds after a made basket with no defender even on the same side of the court. That’s your problem. Your team kinda sucks. Maybe you should make them write essays about why they think they deserve to win
This team is complete irredeemable ass and I’m done with the season
So who’s going to be coach next season after he’s sacrificial lamb?
Glenn Rivers, who else?
Kyle Korver
Nikko was right. Luka will never lead a team to a championship. That kid Cooper Flag though, he’s special.
Luka playing through a foul… Lol. Dude literally complains every time he shoots the ball
The new Kenny Atkinson whiny boy excuse loser mentality sound bite has hit the second tower
“They’re grabbing us they’re holding us”
Obviously I wanted them to win, but this Pistons team is really good. I kind of knew it was gonna happen.
Did we just retire Lebron? I joke, but dude has never looked so mentally fatigued.
wtf does jj want the refs to foul out our whole team? Quit flopping and relying on the refs to bail your players out like always. And actually try playing defense maybe your team can compete
“Luka bows down to the Ron Holland II god”
Defensive mastermind JJ Redick can’t get his team to play good defense?
I’m shocked.
A team with Luka as its best player can do a lot of winning, but not when Ayton, 42 year old Bron, Reaves, etc are around him. Luka can’t be walking back on defense and getting blown by all the time while the rest of the team is doing the same.
In fairness, Lakers were only +2 in free throws on the game, which must have felt like a 20 free-throw deficit given what they are used to.
Luka can’t win with those cats his fault for signing that extension without proper lookout
Having spent about a decade supervising a small team at work, I can heartily sympathize with the frustration of having the same conversation with someone over and over and seeing the bad behavior continue. It’s hard not to feel disrespected after a point.
Lakers see the grizzlies on Friday.
Fully expect all this doom and gloom to be reversed by 10:00 PM (pst), and this sub will be full of “LeBron is running up the court at age 41!” posts.
Clockwork.
No Reaves no motor.
i wish luka would just go play Euroleague and tell the lakers to f off.
Clippers crushed them with KL pouring in 55 points.
