With regard to the efficiency/eye test debate I’d say there’s almost no context where an inefficient frontcourt player is good unless they’re an absolute demon defensively like a Draymond

Point guards can still be offensively impactful with a lowish TS% because of how much they create for their teammates and open up the floor but a 6 foot 10 PF bricking has zero sliver lining

Like for example Cade isn’t super efficient but he’s still very good Paolo has just been bad this season

I don’t understand how some people are so anti shooting efficiency metrics. For a scorer, shooting efficiency is probably the most important metric of impact. A player that can get more points on fewer shots is more valuable as a scorer than the player that gets the same amount of points on 5 more shots.

Advanced stats aren’t the one and only truth buttttttt: 

Paolo has an EPM of +0.1, ranking him around 145th out of all players. Franz has an EPM of +3.2, ranking him 28th. This is based mostly around scoring efficiency and defensive stats.

If I was the Magic I would try to move Paolo and try to build around Franz who is an actual high impact star. Would the the Bucks bite at a Paolo/Giannis swap?

For the past 3 years I’ve been downvoted to hell on my Jalen Green opinions because most Rockets fans will not stand any slander on his future superstardom. During this time I also noticed that Paolo shared a lot of the “bad efficiency” rankings that Jalen Green kept getting on. So I’ve always been hesitant on proclaiming his rise to stardom more than most people.

That next step up people kept expecting to come next year never came for Jalen, and so far has not come for Paolo either.

Never tricked me. I see the potential skillset, but until i see any real result, he is an overrated “star”

Think it’s still a little early to call him a failed superstar tbf. The kid is still 22 and has had significant injuries that have derailed his starts to the last 2 seasons. Not an efficient jump shooter but seems early to claim victory in this argument.

He’s 23 with a unique physical skill set. He draws fouls and gets to the line at an elite level. He needs to work on his jumper, shoot less, and put more energy into defense. If he does that, he can still be a core player on a great team.

I think Paolo is naturally greedier and less team-oriented than Scottie Barnes, but there’s a good example of a promising player that r/nba had an irrational hate boner for because he doesn’t slot into the narrow conception of what a franchise player is supposed to look like. Banchero would do well to mold his play style after Scottie, being more of a do-everything player and less of a chucker.

He has Melo’s offensive mentality with ¹⁄₁₀ of the actual skills. The only way I know how to describe his game is he looks so stiff making moves lol

Would he? Paolo is wildly inefficient during an era where scoring is easier than it was from 99-03ish. So in theory he would’ve only been worse back then. The guys like AI who peaked in the dead ball era were low efficiency kinda because everyone was low efficiency. This is like saying Luka and his awful defense would thrive in the early 00s when defense was even more important.

He seems hellbent on deciding something before it even occurs as in he isn’t adjusting to what the defense gives him. An example of this is a drifting three point shot earlier in the season to potentially win the game. He missed badly and there was still around 10 seconds on the clock.

You can be smart at general but also not be smart at playing a quick real time game

He’s not explosive vertically or laterally. So he resorts to bully ball style basketball which in today’s age will always be inefficient.

He might need to drop some weight to get some of his rookie year quickness back.

He needs to play a A. Gordon role. He should not be 1st option.

The funny thing is that Paolo, 7 years from now, will improve enough to be slightly above average efficiency and he’ll still somehow have a rabid fanbase at that point who will crown him for finally having one decent scoring season. Seen the same thing happen with DeMar DeRozan.

J Dub has been injured too and it’s still obvious. At this rate J Dub last season might be better than Paolo will ever be.

What role player attributes does Paolo have? AG is/was a high level defender, and also lucked into landing with Jokic who needed someone in that dunker position - cos keep in mind he had no jumper, just like Paolo, until last season.
