I’m still a Trae believer in general unlike most people but I do think he might need a change of scenery at this point the Hawks have been mid for 5 years and both sides probably could use a fresh start

Yeah, Atlanta was 8th in defense (~112) on ¹¹⁄₁₈, but they’re 26th since then (118). Trae’s only played ⁵⁄₁₈ of those games, so even if he’s part of the problem there’s still a lot more going wrong

Now that you mention it, JJ really doesn’t seem to put much effort into getting back on defense this season, certainly nowhere near as much as he does running full court on offense.

Yeah JJ is clearly a really really good player but he genuinely gets back cut as much as anybody in the league. His on ball defense is ok because he’s such a good athlete and he’s good in the passing lanes and in help when he actually pays attention, but he just doesn’t pay attention most of the time.

Also, I’m looking at the games, and he doesn’t seem to look bad in most of them. 30 points, 6 assists in a blowout loss, but only a -1 that game. 22 points, 15 assists, +2 in another loss. A very efficient 35 points, 9 assists, +2 in a loss. And he didn’t play against the Spurs.

For what it’s worth, I think the Hawks would have won against us yesterday if Trae was out.

Since?? He’s been in and out of the lineup all season. He’s played 13 games, less than half the season.

The Hawks defensive rating without Young is 113, with Young 126. Looking at the last 6 games their defensive rating is 114 without Young, 129 with Young.

Their defense only falls apart when he’s in the floor. Without him they are an above average defense but with him they are by far the worst in the league.

Fr Atlanta got more shit to worry about than Trae young. Dyson daniels going full Ben Simmons, risacher getting leaped by all his draft peers, kristsps sick ²⁴⁄₇, and Jalen Johnson forgetting how to play defense.

Team defense has been cheeks for a while now. People putting all the defensive blame on one guy is crazy.

How is Johnson that bad of a defender? Seems like he is way too athletic and has enough size to be good on that end.

Before the last game they apparently won most if not all of Trae’s minutes too

It’s just we keep getting told Trae is a star and not an empty stats kinda guy, even though ATL with Trae Young is about as impactful as the Wizards with Bradley Beal.

I feel like JJ has to get a pass on defense considering he’s doing everything on offense and still reminding at a strong click. Like it’s hard to be a team’s offensive engine and me good on defense

The Hawks have lost to the Hornets by 7, Bulls by 2, Bulls by 3, and Knicks by 3 since Trae has been back. In some of those games, Trae played well on offense but gave up as much as he contributed on defense (the 152-150 Bulls game is an example: Trae scored 35 but was also a factor to them giving up 152).

If your perspectice is that playing with Trae Young and his unnamed replacement are expected to have the same outcome, maybe Trae Young isn’t as good as people see from his stat padding.

How an elite 6’9 athlete can be a bad defender is mind boggling.I’ve watched a few Hawks games and he makes great plays seemingly by accident sometimes because of his athleticism.If he just played defense with urgency he could be a monster two way wing.

imagine if we also had a 6’9 center protect the rim, our defense would he horrible! oh wait…

especially with a 6’8 starting center lol

i feel like getting a real center should be the biggest priority. all of the elite teams have strong rebounding/rim protection. if they nail this, then JJ will be able to play better defense. trae has had the teams best plus minus since returning, i really dont think hes the problem, its the team defense. in trae off minutes they dont even improve much defensively but get NOTICABLY worse offensively.

imo. i think trae and jj can coexist. especially since JJ has the tools to be a good defender

I think the Mavs would be an option. They need playmaking and having a mature point guard to set up Cooper Flagg could help them out.

Trae could honestly fit well on the Rockets, they have a stacked defensive team and desperately need a proper PG to sort their clutch time issues out. I think Trae’s strengths would be especially valuable for them and his weaknesses would be relatively possible to match. Not sure what the Rockets would give up but in theory, it would work well. Something like Jabari Smith Jr + DFS + a few picks maybe? Not sure if they need more salary to match.

I wanted Trae for their own 2FRPs back, but I got laughed out of the Hawks sub when I proposed it. I could see this situation brewing from a mile away and a tanking Hawks team turns those picks from mid round to top 5 if ATL tanked. . Same thing happened when I suggested a Fox trade on the Kings sub. Thing is, I thought Fox was a pipe dream. Glad it worked out the way it did

Portland maybe? They need a pg and are more equipped to cover for Trae on the defensive end better than most other teams.

I think the Hornets should go for him. Lamelo and Trae Young can be the backcourt of the next decade

problem isn’t Trae is average/poor defensively like Curry and Jokic. The problem is he’s a horrible. If Trae was the same level of defender as them he’d still be a positive player. Hali and Brunson are examples of poor defenders who are still a big positives without being on their level of offensive greatness
