I’m English and I’m pretty new to being an NBA fan, but I’ve watched a lot of games now and there are still many things I do not understand about this sport… but this, this is one that really bothers me. There is not a single other sport anywhere else in the world where there’s the expectation that you just stop trying at some point because you’re winning. That is ridiculous. At the end of every game I’m shouting ‘shoot!’ Crazy to me.

I think the “unwritten rule” when it’s observed by both teams fundamentally makes sense with the current NBA schedule and game, etc.

I always imagine it as kind of similar to how fighters in Thailand feel. Last round, if no finish hss been achieved, they chill out cos they both have to fight probably the next week and don’t want to be hurt, etc.

NBA players have to play so many games, multiple a week often. So they don’t want to risk injury waste energy on a concluded game. “You don’t want us to play hard defence. We dont want you to style on us. Let’s both just relax.” (The NBA schedule is insane to me as an aside)

Tbh, I also love when players break it like Giannis did (especially when the losing team isn’t abiding by it themselves) but I get why the rule exists and why players get pissed off.

I think people will suddenly change their opinion of this “rule” if someone had come back and chase down blocked Giannis, and someone got injured.

The narrative would quickly become “why are we playing hard and getting injured over a meaningless possession in a blowout!?”
